Molecular identification of carrion-breeding scuttle flies (Diptera: Phoridae) using COI barcodes.

Entomological evidence is often used in forensic cases for post-mortem interval (PMI) calculation. The most dominant species present on a corpse are typically blowflies. However, several cases have been reported where access to a corpse has been restricted for blowflies (e.g., on a buried or wrapped cadavers) but species of the family Phoridae were abundant. It has also been reported that some phorid species that exploit human corpses may also feature in cases of myiasis acquired ante-mortem. In all these cases, they may provide decisive evidence. As for blowflies, the precise identification o…

Wing morphometry as a tool for correct identification of primary and secondary New World screwworm fly.

Cochliomyia hominivorax and Cochliomyia macellaria are endemic Neotropical Calliphoridae species. The former causes severe myiasis in hosts while the latter is Sarcosaprophagous, but commonly found as a second invader in wounds. Due to the morphological similarity between them and the potential losses that C. hominivorax represents for cattle breeders, the rapid and correct identification of these two species is very important. In addition to a correct identification of these species, a good knowledge of C. hominivorax biology can be helpful for designing control programs. We applied geometric…

Complex patterns of genetic variability in populations of the New World screwworm fly revealed by mitochondrial DNA markers.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the New World screwworm fly, is an important agent of traumatic myiasis, which is endemic in the Neotropical region and which has great economic impact on the development of the livestock industry. International efforts have been aimed at designing programmes to control and eradicate this species from endemic areas. Thorough knowledge of the population genetics of an insect pest is a fundamental component to ensuring the success of a pest management strategy because it enables the determination of an appropriate geographic scale for …

Diptera of sanitary importance associated with composting of biosolids in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: Odorous compounds produced at the biosolids composting plant in Bariloche (NW Patagonia) attract a variety of insects, mainly bel … sidered to be eusynanthropic and/or hemisynanthropic and have sanitary importance as they may cause myiasis and pseudomyiasis. The high number of females registered and the finding of immature stages indicated that flies can develop their complete life cycle on biosolid composting windrows. CONCLUSIONS: The characterization of flies obtained in this stud …

Characterization of the screwworm flies Cochliomyia hominivorax and Cochliomyia macellaria by PCR-RFLP of mitochondrial DNA.

The primary screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is one of the most important insect pests of livestock in neotropical regions, whereas Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the secondary screwworm, is of medical and sanitary importance because of its role in the dissemination of pathogens. These two species share morphological similarities and both may occur in the same myiasis, but in different developmental stages. In this work, the usefulness of PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism) of mit…

Antibody responses to Lucilia cuprina in sheep selected for resistance or susceptibility to L. cuprina.

Sheep bred for resistance (R) or susceptibility (S) to fleece rot and myiasis (blowfly strike) have been shown to differ in inflammatory response to intradermal administration of blowfly (Lucilia cuprina) antigens and artificial challenge. The current paper describes analysis of antibody responses to L. cuprina antigens in the R and S animals. Serum antibody titres and specificities to larval antigens were examined and the specificity of wound exudate antibodies was also investigated in animals artificially challenged with L. cuprina. Titres of L. cuprina specific serum IgA, IgM, IgG2 and IgG1…

A Comparative Analysis of the Responses of Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macqart) (Calliphoridae) to Different Reflectance Levels of Green and Yellow Light Hues.

Proximate visual cues play a crucial role for flies (Order: Diptera) in locating suitable foraging and oviposition sites. This study examined the behavioural responses of two sheep myiasis-causing blowfly species in Australia, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), to six different reflectance levels of green and yellow hues. Both species were influenced primarily by reflectance intensity and proximity to the light source. Lucilia cuprina displayed a nonsignificant preference for moderate yellow (p = 0.25), whereas Ch. rufifacies showed a significant attraction to mod…

Data of the study: De Novo genome assembly, annotation, and characterization of chemosensory genes in the camel ked (Hippobosca camelina).

OBJECTIVES: Hippobosca camelina (camel ked) is an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite that infests camels. Hematophagy inflicts painful bites, leading to myiasis, anaemia and pathogen transmission. The genome assembly for this species is currently unavailable, limiting our understanding of its genetics, particularly its chemosensory system. Therefore, this study focused on generating whole genome assembly and characterizing the chemosensory genes to aid in molecular studies of the camel ked. DATA DESCRIPTION: Genomic DNA was extracted from the thoracic muscles of both the male and female camel…

Lucilia sericata is one of the most studied species in forensic entomology due to its widespread distribution, forensic importance as well as medical use. The growth and development stage of maggots is often used to determine the post-mortem interval in forensic cases. L. sericata can cause myiasis in humans who are not able to maintain personal hygiene due to age or medical condition and can therefore be used to determine the time period of neglect. The influence of the temperature on the maggot development has been examined in various studies. Different examinations on the effects of toxic s…

Evaluation of Chilean Boldo Essential Oil as a Natural Insecticide Against Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) is a vector of enteric bacteria, protozoa, helminths, and viruses. These Diptera can also be responsible for secondary myiasis in several animal species. Therefore, it is easy to understand the relevance of studies focusing on C. megacephala dissemination control. The employment of essential oils as natural insecticides must be considered as a promising alternative for the replacement of synthetic insecticides. In this context, the essential oil obtained from Chilean boldo leaves should be highlighted. The aim of the present work was to assess the insect…

Spatial and Temporal Variation of the Blowflies Community (Diptera: Calliphoridae) From an Urban Area in Northern South America.

Blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are necrophagous flies with ecological, medical, veterinary, and forensic importance. These flies carry pathogens that they spread to animals and humans, and produce myiasis. Furthermore, they are useful tools in forensic science as indicators of postmortem intervals, and in biomedicine they are successfully used in larval therapy. This study aimed to assess the spatiotemporal variation of the blowflies community from the urban area of Sincelejo City, located in the Colombian Caribbean region. Samplings were conducted from May 2012 to April 2013, using Van So…

Wingless signaling in a large insect, the blowfly Lucilia sericata: a beautiful example of evolutionary developmental biology.

Blowflies are the primary facultative agent in causing myiasis of domestic sheep in the whole world and, at the same time, it is an important tool for forensic medicine. Surprisingly, and in contrast to its importance, almost no data regarding the embryology and molecular markers are known for this insect. In this report, we present a detailed description of the blowfly Lucilia sericata embryogenesis and of imaginal disc development. The embryogenesis of Lucilia strongly resembles that of Drosophila, despite their apparent size difference. Moreover, imaginal disc development appears to be equa…

Ophthalmomyiasis caused by the sheep bot fly Oestrus ovis in northern Iraq.

Myiasis is the feeding of fly larvae on vertebrates. The sheep bot fly larva of Oestrus ovis is a mammalian parasite of the skin, nose, ears, and eyes. When the larvae infest and feed on the structures of the eye, the condition is termed ophthalmomyiasis. Most often this infestation is limited to the external structures of the eye and is referred to as ophthalmomyiasis externa. The features of this condition are severe local inflammation, positive foreign body sensation, erythema, and lacrimation. Vision may or may not be reduced, depending on involvement of the cornea. A 20-year-old white mal…
