Attentional shifts induced by uninformative number symbols modulate neural activity in human occipital cortex.

Number processing interacts with space encoding in a wide variety of experimental paradigms. Most intriguingly, the passive viewing of uninformative number symbols can shift visuo-spatial attention to different target locations according to the number magnitude, i.e., small/large numbers facilitate processing of left/right targets, respectively. The brain architecture dedicated to these attention shifts associated with numbers remains unknown. Evoked potential recordings indicate that both early and late stages are involved in this spatio-numerical interaction, but the neuro-functional anatomy

REM sleep behaviour disorder and visuoperceptive dysfunction: a disorder of the ventral visual stream?

In idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), an association with visuoperceptive disorders has been described. However, such an association has not been clearly established in RBD secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD). We compared visuoperceptive function in four groups of non-demented patients (parkinsonian patients with or without RBD, patients with idiopathic RBD and control participants) via a procedure enabling the analysis of the various components of visual information processing and in order to answer the following question: is RBD associated with visuoperceptive an

Predicting early reading skills from pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning.

It is well documented that good reading skills may be dependent upon adequate dorsal stream processing. However, the degree to which dorsal stream deficits play a causal role in reading failure has not been established. This study used coherent motion and visual frequency doubling to examine whether dorsal stream sensitivity measured before the commencement of formal reading instruction can predict emerging literacy skills in Grade 1. We demonstrate that over age, IQ and Kindergarten Letter knowledge, pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning, as assessed by frequency doubling sensitiv

Cortical patterns of category-selective activation for faces, places and objects in adults with autism.

Autism is associated with widespread atypicalities in perception, cognition and social behavior. A crucial question concerns how these atypicalities are reflected in the underlying brain activation. One way to examine possible perturbations of cortical organization in autism is to analyze the activation of category-selective ventral visual cortex, already clearly delineated in typical populations. We mapped out the neural correlates of face, place and common object processing, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), in a group of high-functioning adults with autism and a typical co

Green love is ugly: emotions elicited by synesthetic grapheme-color perceptions.

Synesthetes who experience grapheme-color synesthesia often report feeling uneasy when dealing with incongruently colored graphemes although no empirical data is available to confirm this phenomenon. We studied this affective reaction related to synesthetic perceptions by means of an evaluation task. We found that the perception of an incorrectly colored word affects the judgments of emotional valence. Furthermore, this effect competed with the word's emotional valence in a categorization task thus supporting the automatic nature of this synesthetically elicited affective reaction. When manipu

Differential cortical activation during voluntary and reflexive saccades in man.

A saccade involves both a step in eye position and an obligatory shift in spatial attention. The traditional division of saccades into two types, the "reflexive" saccade made in response to an exogenous stimulus change in the visual periphery and the "voluntary" saccade based on an endogenous judgement to move gaze, is supported by lines of evidence which include the longer onset latency of the latter and the differential effects of lesions in humans and primates on each. It has been supposed that differences between the two types of saccade derive from differences in how the spatial attention

Effects of chronic opioid dependence and HIV-1 infection on pattern shift visual evoked potentials.

The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of opioid dependence, alone and in combination with asymptomatic HIV-1 infection, on the pattern shift visual evoked potential (PSVEP). For this purpose, three groups of patients were evaluated, including patients characterized by: (1) a past history (2-4 months abstinent) of DSM-IIIR opioid dependence (i.e. in partial remission); (2) a recent history (7 days abstinent) of opioid dependence with ongoing methadone maintenance; and (3) a recent history of opioid dependence, ongoing methadone maintenance, and asymptomatic HIV-1 infection. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

No single test to diagnose multiple sclerosis is available, and its cause is unknown. The diagnosis relies on recognition of the clinical patterns of the disease as well as exclusion of other possible mimics. Waxing and waning neurologic deficits that localize to the CNS are the hallmark of the disease in most patients. The diagnosis can be supported by laboratory studies, including MRI of the brain and spinal cord, analysis of CSF, and evoked-potential studies of the visual and somatosensory pathways.

Infliximab ameliorates AD-associated object recognition memory impairment.

Dysfunctions in the perirhinal cortex (PRh) are associated with visual recognition memory deficit, which is frequently detected in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease. Muscarinic acetylcholine receptor-dependent long-term depression (mAChR-LTD) of synaptic transmission is known as a key pathway in eliciting this type of memory, and Tg2576 mice expressing enhanced levels of Aβ oligomers are found to have impaired mAChR-LTD in this brain area at as early as 3 months of age. We found that the administration of Aβ oligomers in young normal mice also induced visual recognition memory impairment

The effect of unilateral amygdala removals on detecting fear from briefly presented backward-masked faces.

Facial expressions convey information about the moods and intentions of other people and provide important clues about environmental threats. Previous research has shown that patients with unilateral amygdala removals have difficulties rating the intensity of fearful facial expressions. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether patients with amygdala lesions would also be impaired at detecting fear from briefly presented, backward-masked faces. We found that patients with either left or right temporal lobe excisions were impaired at rating fear intensity in faces, whereas fear de

Visual search for facial expressions of emotion is less affected in simultanagnosia.

Evidence in healthy human subjects has suggested that angry faces may be enhanced during spatial processing, perhaps even "popping-out" of a crowd. These contentions have remained controversial, but two recent reports in patients suffering from unilateral spatial neglect have lent some support to these views, suggesting that emotional faces capture attention more efficiently than neutral stimuli in the neglected field. Here, we investigate this phenomenon in a patient suffering from severe Balint's syndrome and consequent simultanagnosia. Using a visual search paradigm, we studied differences

The influence of colour and sound on neuronal activation during visual object naming.

This paper investigates how neuronal activation for naming photographs of objects is influenced by the addition of appropriate colour or sound. Behaviourally, both colour and sound are known to facilitate object recognition from visual form. However, previous functional imaging studies have shown inconsistent effects. For example, the addition of appropriate colour has been shown to reduce antero-medial temporal activation whereas the addition of sound has been shown to increase posterior superior temporal activation. Here we compared the effect of adding colour or sound cues in the same exper

Neural and behavioural differences in multisensory statistical and reinforcement learning across development and task variants.

The development and maturation of multisensory processing and integration depend on the brain's ability to detect patterns and adjust behaviour based on feedback. However, the developmental dynamics of these mechanisms are not yet fully understood. This study examines neural and behavioural differences in multisensory statistical and reinforcement learning processes by comparing adults and children, and further investigates these processes across two learning tasks of varying difficulty in children. Using a discriminative choice and a match recognition multisensory associative learning task wi

Frontotemporal neural systems supporting semantic processing in Alzheimer's disease.

We hypothesized that semantic memory for object concepts involves both representations of visual feature knowledge in modality-specific association cortex and heteromodal regions that are important for integrating and organizing this semantic knowledge so that it can be used in a flexible, contextually appropriate manner. We examined this hypothesis in an fMRI study of mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). Participants were presented with pairs of printed words and asked whether the words matched on a given visual-perceptual feature (e.g., guitar, violin: SHAPE). The stimuli probed natural kinds and

Visual detection and identification are not the same: evidence from psychophysics and fMRI.

Sometimes object detection as opposed to identification is sufficient to initiate the appropriate action. To explore the neural origin of behavioural differences between the two tasks, we combine psychophysical measurements and fMRI, specifically contrasting shape detection versus identification of a figure. This figure consisted of Gabor elements being oriented differently from those in the background. We equalized performance levels for detection and identification by adjusting orientation differences accordingly for each observer. Hence, stimulus saliency was constant for both tasks allowin

Diminished top-down control underlies a visual imagery deficit in normal aging.

Mental imagery is involved in a wide variety of cognitive abilities, including reasoning, spatial navigation, and memory. Cognitive aging is associated with impairments in these abilities, suggesting that diminished fidelity of mental images in older adults may be related to diverse cognitive deficits. However, an age-related deficit in mental imagery and its role in memory impairment is still a matter of debate. Previous human fMRI studies demonstrated that visual imagery activates representations in category-selective visual cortex via top-down control mechanisms. Here, we use fMRI to show t

Case Report: Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium Maculopathy Originally Diagnosed as Pattern Macular Dystrophy.

SIGNIFICANCE: Pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) maculopathy is a clinical entity characterized by a pigmentary maculopathy in the setting of chronic exposure to PPS. Pentosan polysulfate sodium is indicated for discomfort related to interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome. Given a reported interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome prevalence up to 2%, recognition is critical to mitigate visual sequelae. PURPOSE: We present an observational case report demonstrating typical findings of PPS maculopathy in a patient originally diagnosed with a pattern macular dystrophy. We demonstrat

A comparison of traditional wall motion assessment and quantitative shape analysis: a new method for characterizing left ventricular function in humans.

To forego the need to arbitrarily choose coordinate, reference, and indexing systems and to make other assumptions mandated by traditional methods of measuring wall motion, a technique of regional function analysis based on shape characteristics and pattern recognition was developed. The method is based on curvature analysis, a fundamental shape parameter, and is adaptive to the complex geometry of cineangiographic ventricular images. Quantitative shape parameters were compared to a standard method of regional function analysis (center-line method) in 130 patients. Quantitative shape and wall

Alterations in visual cortical activation and connectivity with prefrontal cortex during working memory updating in major depressive disorder.

The present study examined the impacts of major depressive disorder (MDD) on visual and prefrontal cortical activity as well as their connectivity during visual working memory updating and related them to the core clinical features of the disorder. Impairment in working memory updating is typically associated with the retention of irrelevant negative information which can lead to persistent depressive mood and abnormal affect. However, performance deficits have been observed in MDD on tasks involving little or no demand on emotion processing, suggesting dysfunctions may also occur at the more
