ICT identified substantially more infections than stool examination alone for both O. viverrini and S. stercoralis. Serological ICT screening offers a sensitive, practical complement to parasitological methods. Integrated diagnostics are essential …

BACKGROUND: Current infectious disease screening recommendations for hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) are adopted from recommendations in chron … y screening in the setting of many uncommon or tropical diseases such as leprosy, leishmaniasis and strongyloidiasis.
CONCLUSIONS: The presented consensus recommendations are the first specifically developed for pre-treatment infectious disease screening in HS.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini is one of the endemic helminths in Thailand. Nonetheless, O. viverrini still exist and raise concerns reg … ositively associated with a higher risk of O. viverrini infection.
CONCLUSION: Opisthorchiasis and strongyloidiasis are still endemic in this area and there is a need for projects to eliminate these parasites.

Human infection with the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, which may have a life-threatening course, primarily occurs in tropical settings. Epidemiological data on the occurrence of strongyloidiasis are scarce, and microscopic stool-based detection methods are insensitive. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays have been developed, yet conflicting results have been reported. Our goal was to determine whether there was diagnostic agreement between an in-house PCR and two microscopic techniques, the Baermann funnel (BM) and the Koga agar plate culture (KAP) for the detection of S. stercoralis …

Human strongyloidiasis is a threat to global health, presenting significant challenges in diagnosis and clinical management. The imperative to incorporate strongyoidiasis more fully into control programs for soil-transmitted helminths is increasingly recognized. The unique life cycles of S. stercoralis and congeneric species contain both free-living and parasitic generations, and transcriptomic methods have recently identified genes of potential importance to parasitism in these parasites. Proteomics recently revealed stage-specific secreted proteins that appear crucial to the host-parasite in…

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is mostly an asymptomatic infection and diagnosis of latent infections is difficult due to limitations of current parasitological and serological methods. This study was conducted to set up a PCR-based method for molecular diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis infection by detection of copro-DNA in stool samples.
METHODS: A total of 782 fresh stool samples were collected and examined by agar plate culture. Among those sixteen stool samples, which confirmed to be infected with S. stercoralis were examined as positive control to set up each single and nested PCR, u…

Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome, caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, is a life-threatening condition with a high mortality rate. This case report describes a 76-year-old woman who developed hyperinfection syndrome with gastrointestinal- and pulmonary symptoms shortly after her first round of chemotherapy for stage IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Despite her advanced age and frailty, she survived both the severe parasite infection and the two-month hospital stay, in addition to managing the challenges posed by the advanced-stage lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated that helminth infections provide a degree of protection against Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the relationship between Strongyloides stercoralis infection and T2DM has scarcely been investigated and the protective effect of infection against development of diabetic complications is unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between S. stercoralis infection and T2DM in a rural area of Khon Kaen Province, Thailand. The impact of S. stercoralis infection on diabetic complication-related kidney function biochemical par

A 45-year-old man presents with 48-hour status of high temperature, cough and dyspnoea. In the context of pandemic, the patient is initially diagnosed with COVID-19 syndrome. Later, the laboratory and ultrasound study supported acute appendicitis diagnosis. Appendicectomy was performed. The histopathology study confirmed eosinophilic appendicitis and that a parasitic infection was suspected. The stool sample was positive for Strongyloides stercoralis The diagnosis of a S stercoralis is a rare finding in Spain. BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, identification of a case of severe asthma exacerbation prompts initiation of corticosteroids. However, not all that wheezes is asthma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old man from the Peruvian Amazon presented with progressive dyspnea, abdominal pain, and cough for the past week. His medical history was remarkable for asthma since childhood; he was treated with beta-agonists, ipratropium, and orally administered corticosteroids. On evaluation, he was febrile and ill-appearing. His chest examination revealed diffuse wheezing and bilateral crackles. He was diagnos

Intestinal helminths are prevalent in individuals who live in rural areas of developing countries, where obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome are rare. In the present study, we analyzed the modulation of the gut microbiota in mice infected with the helminth Strongyloides venezuelensis, and fed either a standard rodent chow diet or high-fat diet (HFD). To investigate the effects of the microbiota modulation on the metabolism, we analyzed the expression of tight-junction proteins present in the gut epithelium, inflammatory markers in the serum and tissue and quantified glucose tolera

Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) is a soil-borne helminth but its prevalence in water samples is underestimated. The aim of the present study is to propose non-nutrient agar (NNA) as a novel culture method in the diagnosis of Strongyloides and to detect the prevalence rate of S. stercoralis larvae in tap water samples in Beni-Suef Governorate, Egypt. Eighty tap water samples were collected from Beni-Suef Governorate and each sample was filtered in three steps using three filters: one filter for microscopic examination of wet mount, while the remaining two filters were cultured on bot

Infection with Strongyloides stercoralis is a common parasitic infection in tropical and subtropical regions, including the Peruvian Amazon. The clinical manifestations are varied in patients with immunocompromised disease, and the systemic spread of the disease is frequent, compromising different organs and systems. Cutaneous manifestations are infrequent, being described in patients with some degree of immunosuppression. We present the case of an immunocompetent patient who developed a reactive purpura due to chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Thus, skin involvement is possible in

Diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection can be a challenge. The key to a timely diagnosis is to have a high index of suspicion. We present a rare case of a 36-year-old human immunodeficiency virus negative male patient, who was on multidrug therapy for lepromatous leprosy and was treated for type 2 lepra reactions with steroids in the past. The patient presented with vomiting and pain abdomen, persistent hyponatremia, and terminal hypoglycemia. He had features of malnutrition and had a rapid downhill course following admission.
