[Two cases of spotted fever group rickettsiosis contracted in southern parts of Africa].

A 40-year-old Japanese male stayed in Zimbabwe and developed a fever above 38 degrees C during which he noted a typical eschar in the lumbar region and also regional inguinal lymphadenopathy. Although not conspicuous, erythematous eruptions accompanied by itching were observed on the face, trunk and lower extremities. After returning to Japan and visiting our hospital, he was suspected of rickettsiosis and put on minocycline which gradually led to the improvement of the symptoms. Immunofluorescence antibody determinations disclosed rising titers against Rickettsia conorii (R. conorii) for both

Cutaneous histopathology of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The dermatologic diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is often presumptive; the clinical presentation includes skin rash and febrile illness with or without a clear history of tick bite. The characteristic cutaneous manifestations include a generalized skin eruption with purpuric, blanching or non-blanching macules and papules usually involving the extremities. Although skin biopsies are often performed to confirm the diagnosis, the spectrum of cutaneous histopathology in RMSF has not been well described. We studied a series of 26 cases of RMSF, of which 10 were surgical specimens

Evaluation of mechanical transmission of HIV by the African soft tick, Ornithodoros moubata.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the ability of the African Hut Tampan, Ornithodoros moubata, to mechanically transmit HIV-1 and to re-appraise HIV-1 infectivity in an arthropod cell line at 28 and 35 degrees C. DESIGN: To evaluate HIV-1 transmission by O. moubata, as determined by HIV-1 survival, 'blood-meal' size and interval between feeds, various tick developmental stages were allowed to feed on a heavily infected lymphoblast-rich blood-meal containing HIV-1BRU in an in vitro feeding chamber. METHODS: Blood-meal regurgitation was evaluated using 51Cr-labelled human erythrocytes, and human lymphobla

Peridomestic and Neighborhood-Level Deciduous Land Cover Associated with Lyme Disease Risk: Results from a Case-Control Study in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease (LD), the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, is caused by the transmission of bacteria via the bite of infected Ixodes ticks including Ixodes scapularis. Deciduous forests are a highly suitable habitat for I. scapularis survival and development. This case-control study investigated how LD risk was impacted by residential proximity to deciduous forest land cover. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were selected from the Optum Research Database and mailed a one-time survey regarding LD history, outdoor activities, residential characteristics, and

Co-infection with Anaplasma platys, Bartonella henselae and Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum in a veterinarian.

BACKGROUND: During a two year period, a 27-year-old female veterinarian experienced migraine headaches, seizures, including status epilepticus, and other neurological and neurocognitive abnormalities. Prior to and during her illness, she had been actively involved in hospital-based work treating domestic animals, primarily cats and dogs, in Grenada and Ireland and anatomical research requiring the dissection of wild animals (including lions, giraffe, rabbits, mongoose, and other animals), mostly in South Africa. The woman reported contact with fleas, ticks, lice, biting flies, mosquitoes, spid

Acute brachial diplegia due to Lyme disease.

OBJECTIVE: to describe acute brachial diplegia as the initial manifestation of Lyme disease. BACKGROUND: bilateral, predominantly motor, cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy, the "dangling arm syndrome," has not been reported as a complication of acute Lyme infection. METHODS: retrospective series of 5 patients from 2 tertiary neuromuscular centers. RESULTS: there were 4 men and 1 woman with an average age of 69 years. One recalled a tick bite, and preceding constitutional symptoms included headache (2) and fever, arthralgias, and fatigue in 1 patient each. Proximal arm weakness and acute pai

Temporal analysis of Borrelia burgdorferi Erp protein expression throughout the mammal-tick infectious cycle.

Previous immunological studies indicated that the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, expresses Erp outer surface proteins during mammalian infection. We conducted analyses of Erp expression throughout the entire tick-mammal infectious cycle, which revealed that the bacteria regulate Erp production in vivo. Bacteria within unfed nymphal ticks expressed little to no Erp proteins. However, as infected ticks fed on mice, B. burgdorferi increased production of Erp proteins, with essentially all transmitted bacteria expressing these proteins. Mice infected with B. burgdorferi mounted rap

Effectiveness of personal protective measures to prevent Lyme disease.

After the manufacture of Lyme vaccine was discontinued in 2002, strategies to prevent Lyme disease (LD) have focused on personal protective measures. Effectiveness of these measures has not been conclusively demonstrated. The aim of our case-control study was to assess the effectiveness of personal preventive measures in a highly disease-endemic area. Case-patients were persons with LD reported to Connecticut's Department of Public Health and classified as having definite, possible, or unlikely LD. Age-matched controls without LD were identified. Study participants were interviewed to assess t

[Tularemia in Konya region, Turkey].

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. In the recent years tularemia has become a re-emerging infection in Turkey with epidemics and also sporadic cases. Transmission occurs most often through consumption of contaminated water and food, direct contact with animals and insect/ tick bites. In this study, we evaluated clinical features and laboratory findings of 35 tularemia cases diagnosed during two outbreaks that occurred in two different villages during two different periods in Konya (located in Central Anatolia), Turkey and five sporadic cases. In both outbreaks,

Diagnosis of Zika Virus Infection by Peptide Array and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is implicated in fetal stillbirth, microcephaly, intracranial calcifications, and ocular anomalies following vertical transmission from infected mothers. In adults, infection may trigger autoimmune inflammatory polyneuropathy. Transmission most commonly follows the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes but may also occur through sexual intercourse or receipt of blood products. Definitive diagnosis through detection of viral RNA is possible in serum or plasma within 10 days of disease onset, in whole blood within 3 weeks of onset, and in semen for up to 3 months. Serological diagn

Microbiological findings in erythema (chronicum) migrans and related disorders.

In order to evaluate the virtual advantage of proving borrelial infection in dermatoses clinically diagnosed as erythema (chronicum) migrans (ECM), acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA) or lymphadenosis cutis benigna (LCB) by means of histological, cultural or serological trials, skin and serum samples obtained from altogether 99 patients suffering from these dermatoses were examined. Serum and--to some extent--skin specimens gained from healthy individuals (n = 36), patients with not tick bite associated disorders of skin, internal organs and nervous system (n = 121) were used as controls

The Role of Borrelia Burgdorferi in the Etiology of Chronic Urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis/European borreliosis (LB/EB) is a multisystemic infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of ticks and other hematophagous insects. Transmitted borrelia can occupy any organ where it causes a silent inflammation, which in sensitive persons is intermittently repeated chronically. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to determine how much Borrelia burgdorferii participates in the occurrence of chronic urticaria in children and adults. METHODS: In the 13-year period from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2025, a

Detection of Babesia annae DNA in lung exudate samples from Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Great Britain.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Babesia species DNA in lung exudate samples collected from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from across Great Britain. Babesia are small piroplasmid parasites which are mainly transmitted through the bite of infected ticks of the family Ixodidae. Babesia can cause potentially fatal disease in a wide-range of mammalian species including humans, dogs and cattle, making them of significant economic importance to both the medical and veterinary fields. METHODS: DNA was extracted from lung exudate samples of 316 foxes. A semi-nested PCR was used

[Spinal Epidural Abscess and Spondylodiscitis Following Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever: A Rare Post-Recovery Complication].

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a rare but severe viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted to humans through tick bites or contact with the blood, tissues or secretions of infected animals. CCHF can lead to widespread endothelial damage and immune dysfunction, resulting in severe hemorrhagic manifestations and various complications. Although the majority of patients recover without permanent sequelae, unexpected complications such as secondary bacterial infections may rarely occur during the acute phase or convalescence. In this report, the case of a 42-year-old female patient who devel

[Successful Treatment of Glandular Tularemia with Azithromycin in a Pregnant Patient and Literature Review].

Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. F.tularensis is a small pleomorphic, non-motile, obligate aerobe, gram-negative bacterium that shows facultative intracellular parasitism. It is known to cause disease in both humans and animals and is one of the most infectious bacteria known. The disease has different clinical forms depending on the route of bacterial entry into the body. The routes of transmission of the disease include drinking water contaminated with the bacteria, tick bites, consuming game meat, handling tissues or fluids from infected animals and in

A systematic review on the impact of gestational Lyme disease in humans on the fetus and newborn.

Lyme disease (LD), caused by bacteria of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex, is the most common vector-borne disease in North America and Europe. A systematic review (SR) was conducted to summarize the global literature on adverse birth outcomes associated with gestational LD in humans. The SR followed an a priori protocol of pretested screening, risk of bias, and data extraction forms. Data were summarized descriptively and random effects meta-analysis (MA) was used where appropriate. The SR identified 45 relevant studies, 29 describing 59 cases reported as gestational LD in
