BACKGROUND: Paresthesia is a well-known complication of extraction of mandibular third molars (MTMs). The authors evaluated the relationship between paresthesia after MTM extraction and the cortical integrity of the inferior alveolar canal (IAC) by using computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: The authors designed a retrospective cohort study involving participants considered, on the basis of panoramic imaging, to be at high risk of experiencing injury of the inferior alveolar nerve who subsequently underwent CT imaging and extraction of the MTMs. The primary predictor variable was the contact rel

A case report of a 6-year-old girl with a fractured maxillary left central incisor with an open apex is presented. The procedure used to repair the fracture included flap surgery with an intrasulcular incision and endodontic treatment. The patient was called for 3 months regular follow-up to check the root formation. At the end of 32 months just before the root was obturated by guttaperka, she fractured the same tooth. Flap surgery was repeated and the tooth was restored. The root canal was obturated with a root filling paste and guttaperka as the apex was closed. Examination 10 months after t

Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a non-invasive method to assess pulpal blood flow (PBF). Dental injury has been associated with significant PBF reduction. The purpose of this study was (i) to describe PBF characteristics of teeth with specific clinical outcomes, and (ii) to demonstrate diagnostic characteristics for different threshold PBF values for detection of specific multiple adverse outcomes. In 80 trauma patients, a single maxillary incisor treated by repositioning and splinting, and the respective contralateral homologous control tooth were investigated by LDF to assess local PBF valu

BACKGROUND: Various surgical techniques have recently been developed for periodontal tissue regeneration, especially those do not involve any incisions in the interdental papillae at the regeneration site. These techniques have significant advantages for obtaining clinical attachment gain with least amount of gingival recession, however, may also have disadvantages such as limited field of surgical view, difficulty in debridement, and limited access only from the buccal side. This case report addresses a 2-year follow-up with a novel surgical approach to achieve periodontal regeneration that o

The provision of a joint orthodontic-restorative hospital service is important in providing a quality service for some dental malocclusions. A prospective survey was carried out of the joint orthodontic-restorative clinic at Mayday University Hospital, during the months of January to August 2005. Data was collected using a data collection form. In total 61 patient's attended 4 joint clinics. Fifty per cent of referrals were by general dental practitioners. The commonest referral reasons were spacing and dental trauma. Over one third of patients were seen within 12 weeks of their referral, whil

BACKGROUND: When immediate implant placement is considered for teeth with close proximity to the sinus floor, apical extension of the osteotomy is significantly limited, and often a staged approach is used. Implant placement into fresh extraction sockets and sinus floor manipulation using bone-added osteotome sinus floor elevation with implant placement are techniques most often used independently or sequentially. Very few reports have described the combined use of immediate implant placement in fresh sockets and the bone-added osteotome sinus floor elevation technique.

Bone resorption following maxillary anterior tooth extraction is common and often compromises gingival tissue levels for the implant restoration. The creation of predictable peri-implant aesthetics requires proper understanding and preservation of the osseous and gingival tissue surrounding the failing tooth. This article addresses the various factors that affect the predictability of peri-implant gingival aesthetics in anterior single-tooth replacement. The surgical and prosthodontic procedures for maintenance of peri-implant aesthetics are also presented using an ovate pontic tooth on a remo

Preterm and low birthweight children comprise approximately 6 per cent of all live births. They are prone to many serious medical problems during the neonatal period which may affect the development of oral tissues. The present paper reviews the results of this author's own decade of research into the oral development of preterm children in the light of current understanding of the field. Studies have shown a high prevalence of generalized enamel hypoplasia in the primary dentition of around 40-70 per cent in preterm children which is likely to be associated with low bone mineral stores. OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of immediate implantation after tooth extraction in the maxillary molar socket with poor bone quality beneath the sinus.
METHODS: We collected the data from the patients undergoing extraction of maxillary molars with poor bone quality between the sockets and sinuses. Sinus lifting and immediate implant following the extraction were performed simultaneously in these cases, and the primary stability of the implants, wound healing, and changes of the sinus were observed. At 6 months after the operations, the crowns were installed on the implants. The mastica

The diagnostic accuracy for the localization of impacted canines and the detection of canine-induced root resorption of maxillary incisors were compared between conventional radiographic procedures using one two-dimensional (2D) panoramic radiograph with that of two three-dimensional (3D) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The clinical records of 60 consecutive patients who had impacted or ectopically erupting maxillary canines were identified from those seeking orthodontic treatment. For each case, two sets of radiographic information were obtained. The study sample was divided into

INTRODUCTION: Preformed metal crowns (PMCs) and pulpotomies are established treatments for carious lesions in primary molars. Despite their effectiveness, variability in knowledge and clinical experience amongst dental students has been reported. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions of Dutch dental students at the Academic Centre for Dentistry in the dental school of Amsterdam (ACTA). Regarding PMCs and pulpotomies in primary molars.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted amongst second-to-final year dental students at Academic Centre

This paper reports an implant periapical lesion (IPL) with a previously unreported etiology. The presence of an osteolytic area around the apex and around the middle portion of a stable Straumann hollow-screw implant was found on periapical radiographs 3.5 years after implant placement. Case management involved curettage of the soft tissue surrounding the implant apex as well as resection of the nonosseointegrated portion of the implant. Histopathologic examination revealed a connective fibrous tissue containing a dense chronic inflammatory infiltrate with a foreign-body material. Polarized li

The two-cord retraction technique is used for troughing around a crown to achieve biologic width. This technique can cause significant discomfort for the patient and offers several potential clinical disadvantages for the dentist, of which unpredictable tissue recession is the most significant. The clinical case presented in this article compares the use of the standard two-cord retraction technique with that of an 2,780 nm erbium-class dental laser to determine which method achieves an accurate, easily readable impression while respecting the biologic width. Using an erbium laser to achieve t

Plaque indices have largely been developed for buccal and lingual tooth surfaces. There has been minimal interest in plaque accumulation on occlusal surfaces despite the predilection for caries at these sites. A numerical plaque index (0-5) is described based on the presence and distribution of plaque in the fissures and over the occlusal surfaces of permanent molar and premolar teeth. The repeatability of a single examiner in scoring the index was performed using 4 groups of 10 subjects. Each group of volunteers suspended tooth cleaning for 48 h and the index scored after disclosing plaque de

A dental examination was included in a mainly medically oriented population study of women in Gothenburg, Sweden. From panoramic radiographs the numbers of remaining teeth, restored teeth (fillings and crowns), pontics, and endodontically treated teeth were assessed in 1968-69 and in a 12-yr follow-up study in 1980-81. Women aged 38, 46, 50, 54 and 60 yr were initially studied. In the follow-up study, a group of 38-yr-old women was added. A comparison between cross-sectional data in 1968-69 and in 1980-81 in women aged 38 and 50 yr showed some marked differences. Dentulous women of the same ag

OBJECTIVES: The thickness of the buccal cortical plate of maxillary posterior teeth limits the safe range of transverse expansion with bracketless clear aligners.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed cone-beam CT data from 100 adults with normal occlusion. Buccal bone plate thickness was measured at four sites (F1-F4: 3, 6, 8 mm apical to cemento-enamel junction and root apex) for maxillary first/second premolars (PM1, PM2) and first/second molars (M1, M2). Based on PM1 thickness at F1 (mean ± SD), three maxillary models with thin (0.42 mm), medium (0.72 mm), and thick (1.02 mm) buccal
