Headache in individuals undergoing hormone therapy for gender transition: A cross-sectional, observational study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence, frequency, and characteristics of headache disorders in transgender individuals receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), and to explore the relationship between GAHT and headache pathophysiology. We hypothesized that estrogen-based GAHT would be associated with increased risk of headache, particularly migraine, whereas testosterone-based GAHT would be associated with reduced headache burden. BACKGROUND: Migraine is a highly disabling headache disorder that disproportionately affects cisgender women, with hormonal fluctuations playing a key role i

Pilot Implementation of HIV Self-Testing Delivery in Private Pharmacies Combined With a Respondent-Driven Sampling Method to Improve HIV Testing for Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women in Phnom Penh (ANRS 0100s): Protocol for a Prospective Mixed Method Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Regular testing is recognized as a key strategy for HIV control. The 2023 Integrated Biological and Behavioral Survey (IBBS) in Cambodia revealed that nearly one-third of men who have sex with men (MSM) and one-fourth of transgender women (TGW) were never tested for HIV or not for more than 12 months. The majority of MSM and TGW were tested at community-based organizations (CBOs) facilities and by CBO outreach workers, while private facilities are poorly used for HIV testing (6% for MSM and 9% for TGW). Private pharmacies could be able to deliver HIV self-testing kits giving the ad

Partial rejuvenation of the spermatogonial stem cell niche after gender-affirming hormone therapy in trans women.

Although the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on spermatogenesis in trans women has already been studied, data on its precise effects on the testicular environment is poor. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize, through histological and transcriptomic analysis, the spermatogonial stem cell niche of 106 trans women who underwent standardized GAHT, comprising estrogens and cyproterone acetate. A partial dedifferentiation of Sertoli cells was observed, marked by the co-expression of androgen receptor and anti-Müllerian hormone which mirrors the situation in peripubertal boy

Choice of Hormone Assay to Monitor Feminizing Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown variability in the correlation among testosterone (T) concentrations, estradiol (E2) concentrations, and other clinical parameters to monitor response to feminizing gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). We aimed to determine the degree to which data support the use of serum T, serum E2, luteinizing hormone (LH), or follicle stimulating hormone to monitor feminizing GAHT with the goal of decreasing the effect of endogenous androgens. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of T and E2 concentrations in 9916 transfeminine individuals prescribed estradio

Reducing intersectional stigma among transgender women in Brazil to promote uptake of HIV testing and PrEP: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial of Manas por Manas.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, transgender ('trans') women experience extreme social and economic marginalisation due to intersectional stigma, defined as the confluence of stigma that results from the intersection of social identities and positions among those who are oppressed multiple times. Among trans women, gender-based stigma intersects with social positions such as engagement in sex work and substance use, as well as race-based stigma to generate a social context of vulnerability and increased risk of HIV acquisition. In Brazil, trans women are the 'most at-risk' group for HIV, with 55 times

Transgender women in Kenya experience greater stigma, depressive symptoms, alcohol and drug use and risky sexual practices than cis-gendered men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, sexual and gender minority individuals have disproportionate burden of HIV. There are limited quantitative data from sub-Saharan Africa on the intersection of risks experienced by transgender women (TGW) in comparison to cis-men who have sex with men (MSM). This analysis addresses this gap by comparing reported stigma, psychosocial measures of health, and sexual risk practices between TGW and cis-MSM in Kenya. METHODS: We analyzed data from the baseline visit of an ongoing prospective cohort study taking place in three diverse metropolitan areas. Eligible participants w

Testosterone use and sexual function among transgender men and gender diverse people assigned female at birth.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone use among transgender people likely impacts their experience of sexual function and vulvovaginal pain via several complex pathways. Testosterone use is associated with decreased estrogen in the vagina and atrophic vaginal tissue, which may be associated with decreased vaginal lubrication and/or discomfort during sexual activity. At the same time, increased gender affirmation through testosterone use may be associated with improved sexual function. However, data on pelvic and vulvovaginal pain among transgender men and nonbinary people assigned female at birth are scarc

The mental health of transgender and gender non-conforming people in China: a systematic review.

Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals are at a high risk of adverse mental health outcomes due to minority stress-the stress faced by individuals categorised as stigmatised social minority groups. This systematic review sought to summarise the key mental health findings of the research on TGNC individuals in mainland China. We also aimed to consolidate research on the topic, identify specific mental health disparities, and offer new perspectives for future research to inform both policy and clinical practice. An extensive search of the literature, published in English and Ch

A comparison of the effectiveness of respondent-driven and venue-based sampling for identifying undiagnosed HIV infection among cisgender men who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to increase HIV testing, diagnosis and care are critical to curbing HIV epidemics among cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). We compared the effectiveness of respondent-driven sampling (RDS) and venue-based sampling (VBS) for identifying previously undiagnosed HIV infection among MSM and TW in Tijuana, Mexico. METHODS: Between March 2015 and December 2018, we conducted RDS within the social networks of MSM and TW and VBS at venues frequented by MSM and TW to socialize and meet sexual partners. Thos

A randomized controlled trial of an mHealth intervention for increasing access to HIV testing and care among young cisgender men and transgender women: the mLab App study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The number of youth living with HIV in the United States (US) continues to rise, and racial, ethnic, and sexual minority youth including young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and young transgender women (YTGW) bear a disproportionate burden of the HIV epidemic. Due to social and healthcare system factors, many YMSM and YTGW do not seek HIV testing services and are therefore less likely to be aware that they are infected. Mobile health technology (mHealth) has the ability to increase uptake of HIV testing among these populations. Thus, the mLab App-which combines HIV prevention inf

Intimate Partner Violence Against Transgender Women: Prevalence and Correlates in Lima, Peru (2016-2018).

Limited data exists on intimate partner violence (IPV) among transgender women (TW), though global trends suggest IPV is associated with HIV risk in this population. We describe the prevalence of verbal, physical, and/or sexual violence as well as participant- and partner-level correlates of IPV among TW in Lima, Peru. Among 389 respondents, 15.2% reported IPV with one or more of their last three sexual partners: 9.2% verbal, 8.2% physical, and 2.3% sexual violence. Physical and verbal violence were more common with stable partners (aPR 3.46, 95% CI 1.17-10.25, aPR 2.46, 95% CI 1.14-5.28, resp
