[Recovery of the support capacity of the vertebral column in patients with tuberculous spondylitis].

The paper presents the results of anterior spine fusion in 250 patients with tuberculous spondylitis involving 2 to 8 vertebrae, by using free and non-free autologous bone grafts, carbonaceous implants, and revascularized transplants. Anterior spine fusion added to posterior spinal fixation with a CD-type metal construction. A tuberculous process in the spine was cured in 96.1% of cases; the spinal support capability recovery rate was 95.2% in the early postoperative period and in 93.5% in the late one.

[Instrumental correction of severe kyphosis in tuberculous spondylitis in young children (new technology)].

A new mode has been proposed to correct deformities in tuberculous spondylitis complicated by more than 50 degrees kyphotic deformity. The mode involves extended repair of the vertebral column, supplemented by the use of Luque-modified posterior multisupport hooked contractors. The mode ensures correction deformity to 47 degrees. The procedures of a surgical intervention are described.

Pott's disease of the cervico-occipital junction in an AIDS patient.

Pott's disease of the cervical spine is relatively rare despite the fact that tuberculous spondylitis is still the most common manifestation of bone and joint infection. We describe a case, the first to our knowledge, of sub-occipital Pott's disease associated with a retropharyngeal abscess in an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient. Neurological signs were the main clinical findings. The patient was successfully treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs combined with external stabilization of the spine.

Outcome of surgical versus conservative management of cervical spine myelopathy secondary to cervical tuberculosis.

Cervical spine tuberculosis is a rare infectious disease that is not yet discussed well regarding the optimal method of its management. This is a prospective study of a total of 29 patients with cervical spine tuberculosis with a mean follow-up of 14 months (range, 10-21); they were classified randomly into two groups: group I, patients who underwent anterior cervical decompression and fixation and followed by the anti-tuberculous medications (16 patients) and group II, patients who had conservative anti-tuberculous medications only without surgical intervention (13 patients). All patients had

[A case of brain cysticerosis].

A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the history of epileptick attack of six years' duration. The seizure was associated with Jacksonian march starting in the right hand and then generalized. Todd's paresis of the right arm followed occasionally to the seizure. He was admitted to neurosurgical unit of other hospital in 1968 and 1971, but on each occasion no tumor or vascular abnormality was detected by extensive examiniations such as brain angiography, pneumoencephalography or brain scanning. He continued his hob as an engineer with anticonvulsant. He once lived in Manchuria in

[Use of transpedicular fixation in the surgical treatment of tuberculosis spondylitis and chronic hematogenous osteomyelitis of the vertebral column].

The efficiency of applying various posterior instrumental fixation modes (semirigid constructions and transpedicular fixation (TPF)) was comparatively analyzed in 91 patients with tuberculosis and and osteomyelitis of the spine. TPF was shown to have some advantages in correcting its deformity and preventing the latter's losses, reducing the number of complications in the area of anterior spondylodesis.

[Differentiated surgical and conservative treatment of spondylitis and spondylodiscitis].

In the time from 1980 to 1987 58 patients underwent a conservative or operative treatment of spondylitis and spondylodiscitis according to the individual clinical and radiological features. In early or moderately advanced stages of the disease conservative therapy was performed. Under bedrest and antibacterial or tuberculostatic drug therapy bony fusion of the affected vertebral bodies was achieved in 50% of the pyogenic cases. In tuberculous spondylitis fusion rate was 83%. Persistent septic changes, progressive neurological symptoms and gross vertebral damage are indications for surgery. In

Case Report: Klebsiella pneumoniae-associated pyogenic spondylitis and occult intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma during calculous cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common Gram-negative pathogen in biliary tract infections and may cause deep-seated infection following bacteremia, although vertebral involvement is uncommon. Severe biliary infection and stone disease may also complicate the recognition of coexisting hepatic malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman presented with calculous acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis complicated by septic shock and multiorgan dysfunction. Blood and bile cultures yielded Klebsiella pneumoniae, and her condition improved after urgent biliary drainage and antimicro

Clinical research for saliva-based therapeutic drug monitoring of linezolid.

AIMS: Linezolid is primarily used to treat of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis infections. Thrombocytopenia due to linezolid usage is a concern, and therapeutic drug monitoring has been reported to be effective in its prevention. Plasma concentrations provide valuable information for treatment decisions; however, collecting plasma samples can be burdensome for both patients and healthcare providers. Therefore, there is interest in saliva as an alternative for monitoring, considering its potential to replace plasma samples. METHODS: Patients hosp
