Enhanced silicate weathering (ESW) has shown promise for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in dryland agriculture, yet its effectiveness in flooded rice paddies, particularly regarding the CDR pathways and microbial interactions, remains poorly understood. In this study, we quantified CDR in rice paddy amended with basalt and/or biochar. Basalt applied at 36 t ha-1 sequestered ∼11.3 t CO2 ha-1 through carbonate formation and increased rice yield by 20.7%. Co-applying with 18 t ha-1 of biochar further reduced CH4 and N2O emissions by 30.5% and 52.1%, respectively, leading to a 37.9% reduction in gre

Drought stress is a major limitation to global crop productivity, yet the molecular basis of drought responses in Pisum sativum (pea) a nutritionally important legume remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that drought induces coordinated transcriptional and proteomic reprogramming in pea chloroplasts and leaves, thereby activating photoprotective, antioxidant, and stress-responsive pathways. To investigate this, we applied integrated transcriptomic (Solexa-Illumina sequencing) and proteomic (iTRAQ) analyses, focusing on chloroplast-targeted transcripts and proteins. Our findings revealed

Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-limited phytopathogenic bacterium responsible for severe diseases in many economically important crops. Despite its impact, its metabolism remains poorly characterized due to fastidious growth and the limited availability of defined culture media. Here, we reconstruct the first pangenome-based genome-scale metabolic model for X. fastidiosa, integrating conserved metabolic functions from 18 strains across five subspecies. The resulting consensus model, iXfcore, is manually curated and used to explore the species' metabolic capabilities. Model simulations predict mi

The terrestrial plant Lantana camara L. is well-known terrestrial plant because of its allelopathic activities, which affect the germination and yield of other crops. The study aimed to convert this plant into a value-added compost product, as its characterization revealed significant amounts of volatile solids and nutrients. The study also sought to investigate the identification and transformation of toxic organic compounds during the in-vessel composting of L. camara using a 550 L rotary drum composter. As per the Central Composite Design - Response Surface Methodology (CCD - RSM), the opti

Abiotic stresses caused by climate change pose a serious threat to global crop productivity, making the early detection of plant stress responses crucial. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as key signaling molecules, their dynamic synergistic effects are central to understanding the mechanisms of plant stress adaptation. However, real-time tracking of the dynamic changes of these molecules remains challenging. This study developed a wearable plasmonic nanoarray sensor integrated with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which cleverly combines the high sensitivity of surface-enh

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are widely used in livestock and poultry production, but 30-90% of administered doses may be excreted unchanged or as bioactive metabolites, resulting in their continuous release into agroecosystems through manure storage, handling, and land application. As a result, VAs contaminate soils, manure, irrigation water, sediments, and crops, thereby enriching and disseminating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs). This review synthesizes current knowledge on the occurrence, migration, transformation, resistance implications, and mi

Pesticides are chemicals used in the agricultural, industrial, and public health sectors to increase crop productivity, prevent plant diseases, and reduce pest-related hazards. They can be classified as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and rodenticides based on the pests they target. Their active ingredients include organochlorines, organophosphorus compounds, carbamates, pyrethrins, and pyrethroids. Although the use of pesticides has provided significant benefits to humans, their widespread application has also led to the contamination of air, soil, water, and food systems. After applica

The rhizosphere microbiota plays a vital role in plant stress resistance and pathogen suppression. Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, leads to significant economic losses in a wide variety of crops. The utilization of native microbial consortia has emerged as a promising strategy for combating this disease. In this study, we assembled a synthetic microbial consortium (Co-4) from rhizosphere bacteria with demonstrated antagonistic activity, comprising four strains of Bacillus sp., Heyndrickxia sp., Franconibacter sp., and Pseudomonas sp. Root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) is a major group of plant-parasitic nematode that severely reduce crop productivity by hijacking host root resources. Environmental and toxicological risks associated with chemical nematicides drive the need of eco-friendly management strategies. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the single/joint suppressive effects of Arthrobotrys oligospora and salicylic acid (SA) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants infected with Meloidogyne incognita. Compared to single treatment, combined (A. oligospora + SA) application exhibited pronounc

Plant-parasitic nematodes remain a pervasive yet often hidden constraint on crop productivity, smallholder livelihoods, and market access. This proceedings integrates four vantage points. First, a sub-Saharan African perspective describes how intensification, reliance on informal seed systems, and limited diagnostics allow root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) and potato cyst nematodes (PCN) to proliferate in vegetables, tubers, and perennials. Second, a global biogeographic analysis maps soil nematode abundance and trophic structure and demonstrates strong associations with soil organic carb

Doubled haploid (DH) technology can rapidly deliver fixed lines for breeding and research purposes, especially in crops like wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In Western Australia, we have developed an anther culture protocol that generates more than 12,000 bread wheat DH lines annually. Key aspects of the protocol include the growth conditions of donor plants, microspore developmental stage, stress pretreatment, induction and regeneration medium and culture conditions. Using controlled environment rooms for donor plant growth is important in Australia, enabling year-round production of high-quali

Recycled water for agricultural irrigation helps to address freshwater scarcity but can contain trace levels of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), which pose potential human exposure risks. Traditional risk assessments, focused primarily on the parent compound, overlook CECs as conjugated phytometabolites. The objective of this study was to determine the bioaccesibility and transformation of conjugated phytometabolites of benzotriazole, a prevalent micropollutant that serves as a model contaminant. Propiconazole (PRO), a triazole fungicide, controls fungal diseases by disrupting ergosterol production in fungal cells. It is used in crops such as cereals and fruits. However, there are concerns regarding its potential to disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive toxicity. This study examined the effects of PRO on mouse testes, germ cells, and GC-1 spermatogonia. After eight weeks, PRO reduced testicular diameter and downregulated key germ cell genes (Sall4, Piwil, Nanos2, and Dazl). A histological examination revealed smaller seminiferous tubules and fewer SALL4+ cells. PRO also i

Postharvest losses and limited physiological knowledge restrict the conservation and year-round availability of underutilized crops such as Dioscorea trifida. This study characterized the postharvest behavior of Colombian purple D. trifida tubers and evaluated low-cost, GRAS-status technologies to improve storage performance in smallholder production systems. Tubers were stored for 34 days at ambient conditions (20 °C, 90% RH) and compared with treatments including cold storage, calcium pretreatments combined with Aloe vera-based coatings, and short-duration hot water immersion. Over storage,
