Single-Port Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy with Monitored Anesthesia Care: A More Promising Procedure for Palmar Hyperhidrosis.

OBJECTIVES: Thoracic sympathectomy is considered the most effective method to treat palmar hyperhidrosis. We presented a novel procedure for thoracic sympathectomy treating palmar hyperhidrosis which could be performed under monitored anesthesia care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the continuing efficacy and safety of this innovative surgery. METHOD: From May 2011 to May 2014, we performed the single-port endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) with a flexible thoracoscopy in 32 patients under monitored anesthesia care. All patients were followed up until today. RESULTS: Under monito

Which factors are associated with the use of systemic antihistamines in patients with chronic hand eczema? Results from the CARPE registry.

BACKGROUND: Antihistamines (AH) are often used to treat chronic skin diseases related to allergy and/or pruritus. Data on the use of AH in patients with chronic hand eczema (CHE) is scarce. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate prevalence and determinants of AH use in patients with CHE. METHODS: Data were drawn from the German CARPE registry. The relationship of clinical, demographic and treatment-related variables with AH use in the past 12 months was analysed by means of logistic regression. Odds ratios (OR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were compute

Is dermatitis palmaris sicca an irritant contact dermatitis?

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis palmaris sicca (DPS) is a common dry-fissured palmar dermatitis in Asian women. It may be an irritant contact dermatitis, but the immunophenotype of the cells in its infiltrate is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of inflammatory cells in the pathogenesis of DPS. METHODS: Patch testing was done in 68 patients with DPS, 87 subjects with hand eczema, and 31 healthy subjects. Immunophenotyping of cutaneous inflammatory cells was performed in 8 patients with DPS, 10 subjects with hand eczema, and 8 healthy individuals. RESULTS: Positive pa

Hand dermatitis among university hospital nursing staff with or without atopic eczema: assessment of risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are prone to develop hand dermatitis. Although an atopic constitution has been identified as a genetic risk factor, the behavioural risk factors associated with hand dermatitis in wet work conditions have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the impact of atopic eczema (fulfilling the diagnostic criteria during the past 1 year) on the occurrence of hand dermatitis and to identify the behavioural risk factors among non-atopic nurses with hand dermatitis. METHODS: From August 2007 to July 2009, nurses from Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital wer

In vivo evaluation of a Poly-2p barrier cream protective effect.

AIM: Theoretically, skin barrier creams reduce or even prevent the penetration into the skin by building up a physical barrier, like a thin film between the skin and the irritant. Practically, controversial experiences concerning the effectiveness of barrier creams exist. For this, we propose an in vivo method to evaluate the efficacy of barrier creams trough clinical scoring and instrumental analysis. METHODS: Nineteen housewives with hand dermatitis in remission phase were enrolled in the study. Every patient was evaluated clinically and an arbitrary score was assigned by the investigator c

Risk of hand-foot skin reaction with the multitargeted kinase inhibitor sunitinib in patients with renal cell and non-renal cell carcinoma: a meta-analysis.

Hand-foot skin reaction (HFSR) is an emerging issue in cancer treatment with multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), leading to morbidity, suboptimal dosing, and poor compliance. The overall risk of HFSR is not clear for sunitinib, a TKI effective for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and gastrointestinal stromal tumor. We therefore conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis to determine the risk of developing HFSR with sunitinib. Databases from PubMed and Web of Science for articles from July 1966 until July 2007 and abstracts presented at the American Society of Clinical

Analysis of allergens in metalworking fluids.

BACKGROUND: Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are well-known causes of occupational contact dermatitis in machinists. OBJECTIVE: To gain information about skin sensitizers in MWFs and to compare it with the information in safety data sheets (SDSs). METHODS: A total of 17 samples of MWF concentrates were analysed for skin sensitizers known or suspected to be used in MWF. Alkanolamines, formaldehyde, isothiazolinones, methyldibromo glutaronitrile (MDBGN), and iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) were separated by liquid chromatography. Resin acids of colophonium (colophony) were separated by gas chroma

Assessing phytophotodermatitis: boy with erythema and blisters on both hands.

Phytophotodermatitis (PPD) is a phototoxic reaction which occurs when the skin comes in contact with a photosensitizer and is subsequently exposed to radiation. PPD is often seen in people handling furocoumarin-containing products, such as agricultural workers, bartenders, florists, and gardeners. It may also be seen in beachgoers, athletes, and children. The pattern of the lesions usually resembles streaks; the hands and mouth are most commonly affected due to eating and handling of the offending furocoumarin-containing agents.

Protective gloves in Swedish dentistry: use and side-effects.

BACKGROUND: During the 1980s routine wearing of gloves in dentistry was recommended by health authorities in several countries. However, prolonged glove use is associated with side-effects of irritant and allergic origin. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the extent of glove use and self-reported glove intolerance reactions among Swedish dentists, and to examine how far IgE-mediated allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) occurs in subjects who report rapid itching when in contact with protective gloves. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A postal questionnaire was answered by 3083 of 3500 licensed dentists, a respon
