A randomized trial carried out in rural Zanzibar comparing a single dose of 200 micrograms/kg of ivermectin and 400 mg/day for three days of albendazole for treatment of strongyloidiasis and other intestinal nematodes is described. In 301 children with Strongyloides stercoralis infection, treatment with ivermectin or albendazole resulted in cure rates of 83% and 45%, respectively. While both drugs were very effective against Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura was cured only in 11% (ivermectin) and 43% (albendazole) of the subjects, although the mean eggload was reduced by 59% and 92%, r

Six hundred and eighty-one residents from 16 provinces in northeast Thailand who had previously been found positive for Opisthorchis viverrini and Taenia spp. eggs were given 40 mg Praziquantel (Bayer, Germany), per kg body weight. The total stool output for one to three days was collected and examined for adult worms. The prevalence of O. viverrini in this group was 92.4%. The intestinal flukes Echinostoma malayanum, E. ilocanum and E. revolutum were found to be high in males, with 8.3%, 8.1% and 0.8%, respectively. Minute intestinal flukes such as Haplorchis taichui, H. pumilio, H. yokogawai

Fifteen patients with surgically proven hydatid disease of the lung aged between 4 and 51 years were studied. The disease spectrum varied from single to multiple cysts of different sizes, with associated pyogenic chest infections or parasitic infestations of the gut. The serum IgE level varied widely in these cases and very high levels were found in 60% of the patients. This high IgE response was related to the vitality of the cysts, associated bacterial infection of the chest, infection with helminths and smoking habit.

A biomedical survey for intestinal parasites was conducted in Napsan on the island of Palawan, Philippines in September 1986. A total of 353 stool specimens were obtained from 155 males and 198 females ranging in age from 1 1/2 months to 70 years. Ascaris lumbricoides, 34.8%, hookworm 34.8% and Trichuris trichiura 25.2% were the most common helminths encountered, while Entamoeba coli 27.7% and Endolinax nana 22.2% were the common protozoans. This study demonstrated a 7-13% higher overall prevalence of intestinal parasites among the population on Palawan compared to previous studies in the rura

We examined the prevalence of enteric protozoan and helminthic infections and the associations between infection and gender, sexual preference, and sexual practices in 180 consecutive patients at a venereal-disease clinic. Of 163 men, 29 were infected with one or more enteric parasites. None of the 17 women had an enteric infection. The prevalence of infections with Entamoeba histolytica or Giardia lamblia (or both) was 21.5 per cent in homosexual men, 6.2 per cent in bisexual men, and 0 in heterosexual men. There were significant associations between oral-anal sex and infection with E. histol

A survey of blood and intestinal parasites in a coastal and a mountainous area of the remote island of Alor, southeastern Indonesia revealed widespread infection with pathogenic intestinal protozoa and helminths, malaria and filaria. Amoebiasis (31.2%), ascariasis (35.3%) and hookworm infections (28.6%) were common, reflecting primitive sanitation and hygiene. Trichuriasis rates (6.8%) were less than expected perhaps due to the prolonged dry season and soil factors in the area. Timor filariasis was found in coastal villagers (10.5%), but not in persons living at an elevation of 500 meters; a l

BACKGROUND: Leprosy remains a significant public health issue in endemic regions, including areas in Indonesia. Transmission of Mycobacteriu … e results underscore the need for integrated disease control strategies addressing both leprosy and helminthiasis, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. The PGL-I QURapid demonstrated to be an effective tool in serosurveys, able to aid the identification of areas with high M. leprae transmission rates (such as Sumba) and thereby support th …

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Costus speciosus (Koen ex. Retz.) Sm. (crepe ginger, family Costaceae) is an ornamental plant used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation, rheumatism, bronchitis, fever, headache, asthma, flatulence, constipation, helminthiasis, leprosy, skin diseases, hiccough, anemia, as well as burning sensation on urination.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study is designed to isolate and identify the active compounds from C. speciosus rhizomes and measure their anti-inflammatory activities.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) particularly soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis are among neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) globally. Apart from being associated with anemia, malabsorption and retarded cognitive development these diseases are complicating the clinical picture of more serious infections like HIV, TB and malaria. Renewed and up-to-date information on the epidemiology of IPIs in more vulnerable groups such as irrigated-farm workers and prisoners would significantly contribute towards improving the health condition of such at-risk groups.

PURPOSE: Bats harbor a diverse spectrum of gastrointestinal parasites, including trematodes, cestodes, and nematodes. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal helminths in bats from cave and wetland environments in northern Iran, where bat parasitology remains largely unexplored. The research seeks to expand the regional records of bat parasites and establish a parasitological baseline for future ecological and epidemiological studies.
METHODS: A parasitological survey was conducted on 13 individuals from three bat species (Miniopterus pallidus, Rhinolo

This study assessed the spatiotemporal variation in gastrointestinal helminth infections in farmed Piaractus mesopotamicus reared in floating cages in the Middle Paraná River (Argentina) and evaluated the relationship between parasite abundance and host body condition. We examined 209 fish during two farming seasons (2021/22-2022/23) in four intensive production systems (floating cages) and collected parasitological and morphometric data. Four helminth species were identified, belonging to the classes Trematoda (Dadaytrema oxycephala, Thometrema overstreeti), Nematoda (Procamallanus (Spirocama

An increase in global migration towards developed countries along with climate change has led to the occurrence of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in otherwise non-endemic countries. In this paper we focus on Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections which disproportionately affect people living in poverty in tropical regions. To reduce the threat of STHs in migrant populations living in non-endemic countries, diagnosis and treatment are paramount but also present logistical challenges. This study investigates how statistical modelling can be used to assist the identification of individual

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy remains a public health problem in several countries, including Indonesia, due to its surrounding disability, stigma, and discrimination. In leprosy, compromised immune responses frequently affect the occurrence of helminth infections, which are known to contribute to a number of diseases by upregulating T-helper 2. Elevated levels of interleukin (IL)-10, IL-6, and leptin have been associated with helminth infection and leprosy, respectively.
PURPOSES: This study aimed to measure the serum levels of IL-10, IL-6, and leptin in leprosy patients with and without helminth co
