A Navigation and Augmented Reality System for Visually Impaired People.

In recent years, we have assisted with an impressive advance in augmented reality systems and computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Thanks to these technologies, mainstream smartphones are able to estimate their own motion in 3D space with high accuracy. In this paper, we exploit such technologies to support the autonomous mobility of people with visual disabilities, identifying pre-defined virtual paths and providing context information, reducing the distance between the digital and real worlds. In particular, we present ARIANNA+, an extension of A

Hyperspectral imaging and deep learning for quantification of Clostridium sporogenes spores in food products using 1D- convolutional neural networks and random forest model.

Clostridium sporogenes spores are used as surrogates for Clostridium botulinum, to verify thermal exposure and lethality in sterilization regimes by food industries. Conventional methods to detect spores are time-consuming and labour intensive. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and deep learning approaches, firstly to identify dead and live forms of C. sporogenes spores and secondly, to estimate the concentration of spores on culture media plates and ready-to-eat mashed potato (food matrix). C. sporogenes spores were inoculated b

Real-Time Arrhythmia Detection Using Hybrid Convolutional Neural Networks.

Background Accurate detection of arrhythmic events in the intensive care units (ICU) is of paramount significance in providing timely care. However, traditional ICU monitors generate a high rate of false alarms causing alarm fatigue. In this work, we develop an algorithm to improve life threatening arrhythmia detection in the ICUs using a deep learning approach. Methods and Results This study involves a total of 953 independent life-threatening arrhythmia alarms generated from the ICU bedside monitors of 410 patients. Specifically, we used the ECG (4 channels), arterial blood pressure, and pho

An Artificial Neural Network Prediction Model for Posttraumatic Epilepsy: Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) is a common sequela after traumatic brain injury (TBI), and identifying high-risk patients with PTE is necessary for their better treatment. Although artificial neural network (ANN) prediction models have been reported and are superior to traditional models, the ANN prediction model for PTE is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aim to train and validate an ANN model to anticipate the risks of PTE. METHODS: The training cohort was TBI patients registered at West China Hospital. We used a 5-fold cross-validation approach to train and test the ANN model to avoid ove

Phybrata Sensors and Machine Learning for Enhanced Neurophysiological Diagnosis and Treatment.

Concussion injuries remain a significant public health challenge. A significant unmet clinical need remains for tools that allow related physiological impairments and longer-term health risks to be identified earlier, better quantified, and more easily monitored over time. We address this challenge by combining a head-mounted wearable inertial motion unit (IMU)-based physiological vibration acceleration ("phybrata") sensor and several candidate machine learning (ML) models. The performance of this solution is assessed for both binary classification of concussion patients and multiclass predict

Lightweight Deep Neural Network Method for Water Body Extraction from High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images with Multisensors.

Rapid and accurate extraction of water bodies from high-spatial-resolution remote sensing images is of great value for water resource management, water quality monitoring and natural disaster emergency response. For traditional water body extraction methods, it is difficult to select image texture and features, the shadows of buildings and other ground objects are in the same spectrum as water bodies, the existing deep convolutional neural network is difficult to train, the consumption of computing resources is large, and the methods cannot meet real-time requirements. In this paper, a water b

Prediction of Lower Extremity Multi-Joint Angles during Overground Walking by Using a Single IMU with a Low Frequency Based on an LSTM Recurrent Neural Network.

The joint angle during gait is an important indicator, such as injury risk index, rehabilitation status evaluation, etc. To analyze gait, inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors have been used in studies and continuously developed; however, they are difficult to utilize in daily life because of the inconvenience of having to attach multiple sensors together and the difficulty of long-term use due to the battery consumption required for high data sampling rates. To overcome these problems, this study propose a multi-joint angle estimation method based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) recurren

[Detection of microcalcification clusters regions in mammograms combining discriminative deep belief networks].

In order to overcome the shortcomings of high false positive rate and poor generalization in the detection of microcalcification clusters regions, this paper proposes a method combining discriminative deep belief networks (DDBNs) to automatically and quickly locate the regions of microcalcification clusters in mammograms. Firstly, the breast region was extracted and enhanced, and the enhanced breast region was segmented to overlapped sub-blocks. Then the sub-block was subjected to wavelet filtering. After that, DDBNs model for breast sub-block feature extraction and classification was construc

Glaucoma screening using an attention-guided stereo ensemble network.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease, which causes gradual vision loss and eventually blindness. Accurate glaucoma screening at early stage is critical to mitigate its aggravation. Extracting high-quality features are critical in training of classification models. In this paper, we propose a deep ensemble network with attention mechanism that detects glaucoma using optic nerve head stereo images. The network consists of two main sub-components, a deep Convolutional Neural Network that obtains global information and an Attention-Guided Network that localizes optic disc while maintaining beneficial

MoleGuLAR: Molecule Generation Using Reinforcement Learning with Alternating Rewards.

The design of new inhibitors for novel targets is a very important problem especially in the current scenario with the world being plagued by COVID-19. Conventional approaches such as high-throughput virtual screening require extensive combing through existing data sets in the hope of finding possible matches. In this study, we propose a computational strategy for de novo generation of molecules with high binding affinities to the specified target and other desirable properties for druglike molecules using reinforcement learning. A deep generative model built using a stack-augmented recurrent

Impact of Encapsulation Tissue Growth on Selective Recording in Nerve Cuff Electrodes: A Simulation Study.

Peripheral nerve interfaces (PNIs) allow us to extract motor, sensory and autonomic information from the nervous system and use it as control signals in neuroprosthetic and neuromodulation systems. Recent efforts have aimed to improve the recording selectivity of PNIs, including by using spatiotemporal patterns from multi-contact nerve cuff electrodes as input to a convolutional neural network (CNN). Before such a methodology can be translated to humans, its performance in chronic implantation scenarios must be evaluated. We investigated the performance of a CNN-based selective recording appro

A preliminary evaluation of still face images by deep learning: A potential screening test for childhood developmental disabilities.

Most developmental disorders are defined by their clinical symptoms and many disorders share common features. The main objective of this research is to evaluate still facial images as a potential screening test for childhood developmental disabilities, which is free of any biases of subjective judgments of human observers. Via supervised machine learning, a classifier of convolution neural network (CNN) was built by using 908 facial images, half of those were photos of children labeled with "autism", which may include some developmental disorders with autism-like features. Then face images wer
