Intranasal trigeminal chemosensitivity in patients with postviral and post-traumatic olfactory dysfunction.

CONCLUSIONS: The olfactory and intranasal trigeminal systems are closely connected. With regard to intranasal trigeminal event-related potential (ERP), patients with olfactory dysfunction (OD) showed longer latency and lower amplitude, which indicated decreased trigeminal sensitivity. Different age, etiology, and olfactory status also affect trigeminal sensitivity differently. OBJECTIVE: OD is a common symptom in the rhinology clinic. ERP is considered an important method to evaluate chemosensitivity. The aim of this study was to investigate changes of intranasal trigeminal sense in patients

Beta-amyloid deposition increases in the brain with the progression of silicosis: a [18F] AV45 PET study in mice.

Occupational silicosis caused by long-term inhalation of silica is a serious public-health problem in the world and is known to be a risk fa … osis and observed a significant increase in Aβ deposition in key brain areas such as the cortex and olfactory bulb, correlating with the severity of lung fibrosis. Notably, Aβ accumulation was also detected in the ocular region, indicating its potential as a non-invasive biomarker for cognitive impairment. These findings highlight a direct link between pulmonary …

Neuroinflammation is an undoubted hallmark of neurodegenerative processes characterized by memory impairment, loss of coordination and muscl … havioral tests to assess cognitive and motor skills, while the biodistribution of CSA in plasma and olfactory bulb was studied by a new HPLC method validated for precision and accuracy. The results highlighted that in comparison to the classic oral CSA suspension, the intranasal (IN) administration showed significatively better safety and efficiency profiles. No …

The frontal sharp transient in newborns: An endogenous neurobiomarker concomitant to the physiological and critical transitional period around delivery?

The frontal sharp transient (FST) consists of transient electrical activity recorded around the transitional period from the in to ex utero … he ventral median part of the frontal lobe around the interhemispheric fissure, suggesting that the olfactory bulbs and orbitofrontal cortex, essential in olfaction and the mother-infant attachment relationship, are likely candidates for the generation of FSTs. FSTs may contribute to the implementation of the functionalities of brain structures involved in the h …

The Glymphatic System May Play a Vital Role in the Pathogenesis of Hepatic Encephalopathy: A Narrative Review.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neurological complication of liver disease resulting in cognitive, psychiatric, and motor symptoms. Althoug … s with brain edema. Furthermore, it has been reported that the glymphatic system is impaired in the olfactory bulb, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus in an experimental model of HE. In this review, we discuss different factors that may affect the function of the glymphatic pathways and how these changes may be involved in HE.

Brain uptake and distribution patterns of 2-hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin after intrathecal and intranasal administration.

OBJECTIVES: Cyclodextrins are increasingly used therapeutically. For example, 2-hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (kleptose) is used for the trea … bed efflux transporter. The uptake by CNS after IN and IT was both non-saturable. The uptake by the olfactory bulb, hypothalamus and pons-medulla was favoured by all routes of administration. Adenosine A2A receptor as a potential target for improving cancer immunotherapy.

The adenosine nucleoside performs a wide range of actions on various human tissues by activating four cell surface receptors. Adenosine A2A receptors (A2ARs) are widely expressed in the striatum, olfactory bulb, platelets, leukocytes, spleen, and thymus. They promote vasodilatation, platelet antiaggregatory effect, protection from ischemic damage, and regulation of sensorimotor neurons in basal ganglia. Adenosine signaling plays a vital part in modulating in vivo pathophysiological responses. A2ARs are potent negative regulators of the antitumor and proinflammatory actions of activated T cells…

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 on Host Factors Involved in Mental Disorders.

COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a systemic illness due to its multiorgan effects in patients. The disease has a detrimental impact on respiratory and cardiovascular systems. One early symptom of infection is anosmia or lack of smell; this implicates the involvement of the olfactory bulb in COVID-19 disease and provides a route into the central nervous system. However, little is known about how SARS-CoV-2 affects neurological or psychological symptoms. SARS-CoV-2 exploits host receptors that converge on pathways that impact psychological symptoms. This systemic review discusses the ways invo…

Taming neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury by intranasal delivery of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Plasminogen activator inhibitor-I (PAI-1), a ≈50-kDa serine protease inhibitor, markedly reduces the extravascular t … ble-mutant form of PAI-1 (CPAI). RESULTS: Immunoblotting showed that CPAI sequentially entered the olfactory bulbs and cerebral cortex after intranasal delivery and reduced ≈75% of brain atrophy in HI or lipopolysaccharide-sensitized HI injury. Mechanistically, CPAI attenuated HI-induced plasminogen activators and lipopolysaccharide/HI-induced nuclear factor-κB …

Distribution of Kiaa0319-like immunoreactivity in the adult mouse brain--a novel protein encoded by the putative dyslexia susceptibility gene KIAA0319-like.

Kiaa0319L is a novel protein encoded by a recently discovered gene KIAA0319-like(L) that may be associated with reading disability. Little is known about the characteristics of this protein and its distribution in the brain. We investigated here expression of this protein in adult mice, using an antibody specific for human and rodent Kiaa0319L. In the brain, Kiaa0319L was localized strongly in the olfactory bulb, and strong expression was found in other regions, including hippocampus, cerebellum, diencephalon and the cerebral cortex. Immunohistochemistry confirmed expression in these brain reg…

Are dysautonomic and sensory symptoms present in early Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's disease (PD) occurs with an annual incidence of 13/100.000, is slightly more frequent in men and is characterized by the motor s … e process. Braak proposed a sequential model of neuropathology in PD starting with affection of the olfactory bulb and the autonomic innervation of the heart and gut. Affection of SN is seen from Braak stage 3, and limbic and cortical structures are affected in the later stages of the disease. Currently, the evidence for sensory and autonomic involvement in PD i …

Induction of adult neurogenesis: molecular manipulation of neural precursors in situ.

Over most of the past century, it was thought that the adult brain was completely incapable of generating new neurons. However, in the last decade, the development of new techniques has resulted in an explosion of new research showing that (i) neurogenesis, the birth of new neurons, is not restricted to embryonic development, but normally also occurs in two limited regions of the adult mammalian brain (the olfactory bulb and the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus); (ii) that there are significant numbers of multipotent neural precursors in many parts of the adult mammalian brain; and (iii) that …
