Exploring the venom of the forest cobra snake: Toxicovenomics and antivenom profiling of Naja melanoleuca.

UNLABELLED: A toxicovenomic analysis of the venom of the forest cobra, N. melanoleuca, was performed, revealing the presence of a total of 52 proteins by proteomics analysis. The most abundant proteins belong to the three-finger toxins (3FTx) (57.1wt%), which includes post-synaptically acting α-neurotoxins. Phospholipases A2 (PLA2) were the second most abundant group of proteins (12.9wt%), followed by metalloproteinases (SVMPs) (9.7wt%), cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRISPs) (7.6wt%), and Kunitz-type serine proteinase inhibitors (3.8wt%). A number of additional protein families comprised e

Loss-of-function mutations in SCN4A cause severe foetal hypokinesia or 'classical' congenital myopathy.

Congenital myopathies are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of muscle disorders characterized by congenital or early-onset hypotonia and muscle weakness, and specific pathological features on muscle biopsy. The phenotype ranges from foetal akinesia resulting in in utero or neonatal mortality, to milder disorders that are not life-limiting. Over the past decade, more than 20 new congenital myopathy genes have been identified. Most encode proteins involved in muscle contraction; however, mutations in ion channel-encoding genes are increasingly being recognized as a cause of this g

NTP technical report on the toxicity studies of of n-Hexane in B6C3F1 Mice (Inhalation Studies) (CAS No. 110-54-3).

Thirteen-week inhalation toxicity studies of n-hexane were conducted with B6C3F1 mice of each sex exposed to 0, 500, 1,000, 4,000, or 10,000 ppm, 6 hours per day, 5 days per week or to 1,000 ppm, 22 hours per day (referred to as 1,000c), 5 days per week. All mice lived to the end of the studies. The final mean body weights of mice exposed to 1,000c ppm or 10,000 ppm were 10% or 17% lower than that of the controls for males and 0% or 6% lower for females. Hematologic analyses were performed on whole blood samples collected at the end of the 13-week exposure. Segmented neutrophils were significa

LC-MS/MS method for the determination of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on a triple quadruple mass spectrometer.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), often referred to as the 'puffer fish' poison, is a marine toxin and it has been identified as the agent responsible for many food poisoning incidents around the world. It is a neurotoxin that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, resulting in respiratory paralysis and even death in severe cases. It is known to occur in many different species of fish and other organisms. The toxin is mainly found in the Southeast Asia region. Worryingly, TTX is starting to appear in European waters. It is suspected that this is a consequence of Lessepsian migration, also known as the Erythr…

A study on use of animals as traditional medicine by Sukuma Tribe of Busega District in North-western Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Faunal resources have played an extensive range of roles in human life from the initial days of recorded history. In addition to their importance, animals have been acknowledged in religion, art, music and literature and several other different cultural manifestations of mankind. Human beings are acquainted with use of animals for foodstuff, cloth, medicine, etc. since ancient times. Huge work has been carried out on ethnobotany and traditional medicine. Animal and their products are also holding medicinal properties that can be exploited for the benefit of human beings like plants

A retrospective study of hyponatremia in tetraplegic/paraplegic patients with a review of the literature.

The aetiology of hyponatremia in tetraplegic patients is multifactorial and includes not only general factors such as the use of diuretics and the intravenous infusion of hypotonic fluids, but also certain mechanisms which operate in the spinal cord injured: decreased renal water excretion due to both intrarenal and arginine vasopressin dependent mechanisms (resetting of the osmostat), coupled with habitually increased fluid intake, and the ingestion of a low salt diet. Between 1984 and 1993 we treated 28 episodes of hyponatremia in 19 patients (males: 10; females: 9). Fourteen were tetraplegi

[Complications following cell therapy].

So far, the law in the Federal Republic of Germany still allows the injection of fresh-cell preparations from animals as a roborant to increase the vitality of the organism and to strengthen the body's immune defense system. The use of "sicca-cell" preparations was provisionally forbidden in 1987 by the Federal Health Organization (Bundesgesundheitsamt; BGA). Prohibition of fresh-cell injections would have exceeded the authority of this office, although the same serious reservations also applied in the case of this treatment method. Several publications that have appeared since 1955 have repor

Airway trauma in a high patient volume academic cardiac electrophysiology laboratory center.

BACKGROUND: Providing anesthesia and managing airways in the electrophysiology suite can be challenging because of its unique setting outside of the conventional operating room. We report our experience of several cases of reported airway trauma including tongue and pharyngeal hematoma and vocal cord paralysis in this setting. METHODS: We analyzed all of the reported airway trauma cases between December 2009 and January 2011 in our cardiac electrophysiology laboratories and compared these cases with those without airway trauma. Data from 87 cases, including 16 cases with reported airway traum

Involvement of peripheral adenosine A2 receptors in adenosine A1 receptor-mediated recovery of respiratory motor function after upper cervical spinal cord hemisection.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In an animal model of spinal cord injury, a latent respiratory motor pathway can be pharmacologically activated through central adenosine A1 receptor antagonism to restore respiratory function after cervical (C2) spinal cord hemisection that paralyzes the hemidiaphragm ipsilateral to injury. Although respiration is modulated by central and peripheral mechanisms, putative involvement of peripheral adenosine A2 receptors in functional recovery in our model is untested. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of peripherally located adenosine A2 receptors on re

Impact of Phrenic Nerve Palsy and Need for Diaphragm Plication Following Surgery for Pulmonary Atresia With Ventricular Septal Defect and Major Aortopulmonary Collaterals.

Injury to the phrenic nerves may occur during surgery for pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (PA-VSD and MAPCAs). These patients may develop respiratory failure and require diaphragm plication. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of phrenic nerve palsy on recovery following surgery for PA-VSD and MAPCAs. Between 2007 and 2016, approximately 500 patients underwent surgery for PA-VSD and MAPCAs at our institution. Twenty-four patients (4.8%) subsequently had evidence of new phrenic nerve palsy. Sixteen patients were unde

Diagnosis of abnormal diaphragm motion after cardiothoracic surgery: ultrasound performed by a cardiac intensivist vs. fluoroscopy.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormal diaphragmatic motion secondary to phrenic nerve injury is not uncommon after pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. Fluoroscopy is the most frequent method of diagnosis but it carries risks associated with transportation of critically ill children and exposure to ionizing radiation. Ultrasonography, a reliable diagnostic method in adults, eliminates both concerns. Since most cardiac intensivists are trained in echocardiography, we tested the hypothesis that chest ultrasound performed by a cardiac intensivist is faster than fluoroscopy, and is highly accurate in predicting fluor

Clinical features that distinguish PLS, upper motor neuron-dominant ALS, and typical ALS.

OBJECTIVE: To determine how clinical features at the first evaluation and in follow-up can be used to suggest a diagnostic outcome for patients with only upper motor neuron (UMN) signs at disease onset. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 34 patients (9 primary lateral sclerosis [PLS], 15 UMN-dominant amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS], and 10 randomly selected control patients with ALS) seen in 1984-2007. Analysis of variance F tests for continuous variables and chi2 tests for categorical variables analyzed differences in baseline data among the diagnostic categories. Linear and generalized

Ischemic necrosis of nose and palate after embolization for epistaxis. A case report.

This paper reports the case of a 50-year-old man who underwent superselective embolization after severe posterior rhinorrhagia caused by hypertension. Twelve hours after the procedure, left-sided hemiparesis and right-sided facial nerve paresis developed, followed by ulceration and necrosis of the soft palate, diaphragm, and right nasal ala. Reconstruction was implemented with porous polyethylene for the nasal pyramid, a forehead flap and a mucosal flap from the oral vestibulum for polyethylene coverage, and a rotational palatal flap for closure of the oroantral fistula. Exposure of the materi

Thoracic complications and emergencies in oncologic patients.

Oncology patients often experience urgent or emergent medical complications that are a direct or indirect result of the underlying malignant condition and are first identified or clarified on radiologic imaging studies. The aim of this review is to identify, discuss, and illustrate some of the major thoracic complications in patients with primary intrathoracic or extrathoracic neoplasms; particular focus is placed on issues in which radiologic imaging may have a significant impact on patient management, including superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, post-obstructive pneumonia, diaphragmatic para
