INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis is an exceptionally rare cause of haemoptysis, the diagnosis being difficult and often delayed.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a retired coal miner suffering from pneumoconiosis who presented with acute respiratory insufficiency and massive haemoptysis, with a fatal outcome, associated with pulmonary stongyloidosis. The only identified source of infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis was his period in the coal mine and the only risk factors for the hyperinfestation were a short course of systemic corticosteroid therapy

The prevalence of allergic diseases such as asthma has increased markedly over the past few decades. To evaluate the possible mutual influence of helminth infection and allergy, the combined effects of experimental allergic airway inflammation and infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis on various parasitological and inflammatory indices were evaluated in the rat. A challenge of immunized rats with aerosolized ovalbumin (OVA) resulted in eosinophilic inflammation that peaked 48 h after the challenge and was accompanied by airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to an intravenous acetylcholine chal

The effects of host age and sex on susceptibility to Strongyloides venezuelensis in Wistar rats were examined by counting larvae recovered from the lungs of animals 3 days after infection. The susceptibility of female rats to S. venezuelensis rapidly decreased with age and elevated estrogen. Resistance in female rats inoculated at 6 and 10 weeks of age was nine and twenty-fold higher, respectively than that in the youngest group (3 weeks). In contrast, the susceptibility of male animals was lowest in the youngest group, then increased with age and elevated testosterone. Sex differences in susc

Many analyses of results from multiple diagnostic tests assume the tests are statistically independent conditional on the true disease status of the subject. This assumption may be violated in practice, especially in situations where none of the tests is a perfectly accurate gold standard. Classical inference for models accounting for the conditional dependence between tests requires that results from at least four different tests be used in order to obtain an identifiable solution, but it is not always feasible to have results from this many tests. We use a Bayesian approach to draw inference

The patterns of infection of American eels Anguilla rostrata, with the introduced swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus, in tributaries of middle and upper Chesapeake Bay are described. A total of 423 subadult eels was collected from 8 Bay tributaries from spring 1998 to fall 1999. Also, 30 elvers were collected from Ocean City, Maryland, in spring 1998. The numbers of juvenile and adult specimens of A. crassus in the swimbladder wall and lumen were counted. No elvers were infected. In subadult eels, prevalence of adult and juvenile stages combined ranged from 13% to 82%; mean intensity ra

In order to assess the existence of autochthonous strongyloïdiasis, a retrospective study was carried out in Région Midi-Pyrénées (Southwestern France). Among 63 strongyloïdiasis cases diagnosed at the Consultation of the Department of Parasitology, CHU Purpan in Toulouse, 17 patients (27%) were identified as likely harboring an autochthonous infection. The diagnosis was based upon the results of either Baermann's method for stool examination, or indirect fluoroimmunoassay using Strongyloïdiasis ratti L3 larvae as antigen. Repeated contact with soil or mud, due to occupation or gardening, was

A case of respiratory hyperinfection syndrome which occurred in a patient on long term corticosteroid therapy is reported here for it's rarity. Intestinal infection with this parasite should be looked for and treated before the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy.

A sex-related difference in host susceptibility to Strongyloides ratti was previously known. Male mice were more susceptible to S. ratti infection and the difference was seen against migrating larvae under the regulation of testosterone. Against migrating larvae, macrophages were assumed to play important roles in host natural immunity. On the basis of these findings, to examine the effect of testosterone on macrophages we treated female mice with testosterone and/or carbon to block the function of macrophages. Mice were then infected with third-stage larvae of S. ratti. By counting of the mig

The domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica L.) has been wild breeding in the Varzea Amazonian Estuary area. Without dietary supplement or medical prevention, the pigs survive, bringing economic benefits to local peasants. Endoparasitic diseases generate economic losses because of neonatal death and clinical disease. We assessed the nematoda (O. Nematoda) and coccidia (O. Eucoccidia) parasitic level and tolerance in 75 pigs (0-18 months) from 35 families using the following methods: (i) larvae culture, (ii) Hoffman, (iii) Willis-Mollay (Hoffman 1987) and (iv) postmortem examinations. We identified

Six patients suffering from an unusual form of colitis produced by Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection are described. In contrast to the usual Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome, in which small intestinal and pulmonary manifestations are seen in patients with some forms of immunodeficiency, the patients described here presented with only a characteristic transmural eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation affecting mostly the colonic wall and clinically mimicking ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. This Strongyloides eosinophilic granulomatous enterocolitis apparently results from a

Strongyloides stercoralis ordinarily matures in the human proximal small intestine and embeds in the small intestine mucosal wall where eggs are produced. Although Strongyloides may infect many sites in hyperinfection syndromes, reports of gastric involvement are rare. We report a patient taking prednisone and an H2 blocker who developed hyperinfection syndrome, with mucosal Strongyloides larvae seen in a gastric biopsy.

During the period 28 February-1 July 1992, fecal samples were collected and examined for eggs of Strongyloides westeri once from each of 382 horse foals (364 Thoroughbreds, 16 Standardbreds, one Lippizaner, and one draft-type horse) in central Kentucky. Ages of the foals at the time of sampling ranged from 7 to 63 days (mean 22 days). The nine farms in the study were considered to have overall excellent deworming programs. None of the foals had been treated with an antiparasitic compound before the study. Eggs of S. westeri were found in 6% (22 of 382) of the foals on 78% (7 of 9) of the farms

A highly significant familial aggregation of eosinophil levels (X2(3) = 38.00) was detected in a sample from three Brazilian populations with a high incidence of helminthic parasitism. The data were unable to resolve genetic or common environment causation due to the lack of environmental concomitant variables. Results of path analysis indicate that the familial cause accounts for about 58% of the total variability of eosinophil levels among parasite-infected individuals.

Previous work in Papua New Guinea has shown considerable variation in egg counts between different people infected with Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi, although individual egg loads remained relatively constant over a 14-month period. Possible explanations include genetic predisposition, a surprising longevity of the worms, or external auto-infection. We have now analysed the pedigrees of 177 individuals for whom egg counts were available, and find no evidence for polygenic inheritance of factors related to egg counts. The use of genetic models postulating the segregation of a single unknown
