The response of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) to chemotherapy is poor, and a major obstacle to successful treatment is intrinsic or acquired drug resistance. To determine the clinical significance of multidrug resistance protein (MRP) 1 in ATL, we studied MRP1 expression and its association with clinical outcome. The expression of MRP1 mRNA in leukemia cells from 48 ATL patients was studied by slot blot analysis. Cytokines play a fundamental role during development of the nervous system. In this work we demonstrate the effect of IL-2 and IL-4 on [(3)H]choline uptake by retinal cells in vitro. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays were used to investigate the pathobiological effects of arecoline on cultured human buccal fibroblasts. Arecoline increased double-stranded polynucleic acid at the concentration of 0.1 to 10 micrograms/ml in a concentration-dependent manner. A wound model for decubitus and leg ulcers consisting of human dermal fibroblasts in type I collagen dermal "equivalent" matrix (DEM) was exposed in vitro to electric fields similar to postulated endogenous fields in wounds. After an 8-10 day maturation period, conductivity of DEM samples was determined. Then, DEM samples were mounted in oval windows equidistant between Ag/AgCl agar electrodes in exposure chambers containing serum-free medium. A known low-frequency sinusoidal current was then applied for 12 h, and the average electric field amplitude was calculated in the region of the cells.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the cross-sectional association between platelet membrane serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor variables in children and characteristics of their parents that place these children at risk for antisocial behavior.
METHOD: As part of a larger prospective study investigating predictors of antisocial behavior, 38 younger brothers of convicted delinquents provided platelet samples; samples from 34 boys (mean age=8.3 years) were usable. We used a strain of differentiated rat-thyroid cells in continuous culture (the FRTL-5 strain) to detect the presence of growth-promoting antibodies in serum samples from patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. We found that IgG preparations from 17 of 20 patients (85 per cent) with active Graves' disease and two of five patients (40 per cent) with Hashimoto's thyroiditis could augment thyroid-cell growth.
