Validation of post-harvest antimicrobial interventions to control Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) on market hog carcass surfaces.

Although swine are less associated with STEC foodborne disease outbreaks, the potential for swine to serve as a source of STEC infections in human beings cannot be disregarded. This study compared eight USDA-approved antimicrobial intervention technologies to quantify their ability to reduce STEC contamination on market hog carcasses. Hogs were harvested to provide skin-on carcass sides, and eight sides (per three replications) were inoculated with a 7-strain STEC cocktail (ca. 5 log CFU/cm2 across all external and body cavity surfaces). Each side was randomly assigned to a final pre-chill was

Health Care-Associated Infections and the Radiology Department.

Health care-associated infections (HCAIs) are a significant concern for both health care workers (HCWs) and patients. They are a major contributing factor of disease in industrialized countries, and are responsible for significant morbidity, mortality, and a direct annual financial loss of $6-7 billion in North America alone. They are an increasingly challenging health issue due to multidrug-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci among others, along with an increasing number of susceptible patients. Over the last three decad

Infected hardware after surgical stabilization of rib fractures: Outcomes and management experience.

BACKGROUND: Surgical stabilization of rib fracture (SSRF) is increasingly used for treatment of rib fractures. There are few data on the incidence, risk factors, outcomes, and optimal management strategy for hardware infection in these patients. We aimed to develop and propose a management algorithm to help others treat this potentially morbid complication. METHODS: We retrospectively searched a prospectively collected rib fracture database for the records of all patients who underwent SSRF from August 2009 through March 2014 at our institution. We then analyzed for the subsequent development

Ertapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae: risk factors for acquisition and outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Carbapenem resistance among Enterobacteriaceae is of concern because of increasing prevalence and limited therapeutic options. Limited research has been focused on understanding ertapenem resistance as a more sensitive marker for resistance to other carbapenems. We sought to determine risk factors for acquisition of ertapenem-resistant, meropenem-susceptible, or intermediate Enterobacteriaceae and to assess associated patient outcomes. DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study among adult hospitalized inpatients. SETTING: A 902-bed quaternary care urban hospital. RE

[Candida albicans outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit].

The appearance of Candida albicans in three patients made physicians investigate an outbreak. Outbreak description and microbiologic screening: Case 1 developed C. albicans in the placenta culture and in the blood culture carried out on the 8th day of birth. Four days after this candidemia, C. albicans was recovered in a catheter tip of a second neonate (case 2) and finally five days later other newborn (case 3) developed C. albicans in the hemoculture. After that, the hands of all caregivers as well as case 3's incubator, case 1's mother, and from all nine neonates in the unit were studied wi

Device-related nosocomial infection in intensive care units of Alexandria University Students Hospital.

We studied the magnitude and determinants of device-related nosocomial infections in intensive care units (ICU) and identified the predominant microorganisms involved. Sputum, urine, blood cultures and chest X-ray were taken from each patient on admission and on appearance of any sign/symptom of infection. Out of 400 patients admitted to 3 units during the study, 45 (11.3%) developed nosocomial infections. The most important determinants of infection were previous admission to an ICU, whether in the same or another hospital, and duration of stay. Overall, 38 patients developed 43 device-relate

Typing of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolates by degenerate (D-)RAPD fingerprinting.

A new method to identify clonal strains of pathogenic bacteria has been developed recently in this laboratory. The method utilizes degenerate random amplified polymorphic DNA primers (D-RAPD) to amplify random fragments in crude bacterial lysates, generating reproducible DNA banding profiles or fingerprints. We use this method to type outbreak and non-outbreak isolates of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 from four hospitals near to, and affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Patient isolates from a large outbreak, and nearly half of the contemporaneous environmental iso
