Adult Eye Conditions: Ophthalmic Emergencies.

Prompt recognition and referral of patients with ophthalmic emergencies is crucial to preserving vision. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is the result of blockage of the outflow of aqueous humor, which increases intraocular pressure (IOP) and damages the retina. Patients typically report abrupt onset of a unilateral painful red eye with blurry vision and constitutional symptoms. The diagnosis is confirmed by measurement of elevated IOP. Urgent evaluation by an ophthalmologist is required to reduce the IOP before medical and surgical treatment. Retinal detachment occurs when fluid passes through a

Fibroblast radiosensitivity and intraocular fibrovascular proliferation following radiotherapy for bilateral retinoblastoma.

A 5-day-old female patient was found to have large hereditary retinoblastomas in the posterior pole of each eye. The patient received radiation treatment over a 39-day period, with each retina receiving 4600 rad. Two weeks after the complete treatment the tumours had regressed to approximately one-quarter of their original size. By 14 weeks following completion of radiotherapy the patient had developed in each eye extensive iris neovascularisation with progressive closure of the filtration angles, secondary glaucoma, and retinal detachments resulting from fibrovascular proliferation on the ret

Experimental Assessment of Iris Water Content and Sex Differences in Mature Rabbits.

Iris biomechanics plays a key role in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Soft tissue biomechanics is heavily influenced by tissue water content; therefore, accurately assessing water content is needed to describe iris biomechanics in a physiologically relevant manner. Yet, accurate experimental measurements of iris water content are rare in the literature. Therefore, our objective was to experimentally assess iris water content and potential sex differences in New Zealand White rabbit iris-a suitable model for studying iris biomechanics. We also examined the effect of exposure to phosphate

Neovascular Glaucoma Secondary to Choroidal Metastasis From Lung Adenocarcinoma: A Palliative Management Challenge.

Choroidal metastasis is the most common intraocular malignancy in adults and may present as the initial manifestation of an underlying systemic malignancy. We report a case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with unilateral progressive visual deterioration and was initially referred with a working diagnosis of ocular tuberculosis (TB). Ocular examination revealed a non-pigmented choroidal mass with exudative retinal detachment. Subsequent imaging identified a lung lesion, and a primary lung malignancy was suspected based on contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the thorax. Histopathologic

Bilateral Sequential Spontaneous Anterior Dislocated Intraocular Lens in a Patient With Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Retinitis pigmentosa is one of the risk factors for intraocular lens dislocation post cataract surgery which can lead to many complications. A 64-year-old Chinese female with bilateral pseudophakia and retinitis pigmentosa was referred for the continuation of care in 2009 with baseline visual acuity of hand movement bilaterally due to the retinitis pigmentosa. The cataract surgeries with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation in her early 50s were uneventful. In 2011, her right eye PCIOL dislocated anteriorly into the anterior chamber spontaneously and touched the cornea. It w

Anisocoria after Posterior Spine Surgery: A Rare but Disastrous Complication - A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular complications after spine surgery in prone position are very rare and are described centrally in elective surgeries with long duration. The most well-known ocular complications are vision loss and acute angle-closure glaucoma. To the best of our knowledge, anisocoria after prone spinal surgery has never been reported previously in literature. CASE REPORT: We present a very rare case of a transient harmless anisocoria in a 23-year-old otherwise healthy female patient, who underwent in the traditionally prone position lumbosacral spinal fractures stabilization and calcaneal
