The impact of a history of child abuse on cognitive performance: a cross-sectional study in older patients with a depressive, anxiety, or somatic symptom disorder.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a major global burden with an enduring negative impact on mental and physical health. A history of child abuse is consistently associated with worse cognitive performance among adults; data in older age groups are inconclusive. Since affective symptoms and cognitive functioning are interrelated among older persons, a synergistic effect can be assumed in patients with affective symptoms who also have suffered from child abuse. This study examines the association between a history of child abuse and cognitive performance in such patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional data

Lack of Consensus Across Clinical Guidelines Regarding the Role of Psychosocial Factors Within Low Back Pain Care: A Systematic Review.

It is widely accepted that psychosocial prognostic factors should be addressed by clinicians in their assessment and management of patient suffering from low back pain (LBP). On the other hand, an overview is missing how these factors are addressed in clinical LBP guidelines. Therefore, our objective was to summarize and compare recommendations regarding the assessment and management of psychosocial prognostic factors for LBP chronicity, as reported in clinical LBP guidelines. We performed a systematic search of clinical LBP guidelines (PROSPERO registration number 154730). This search consist

Phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency: diagnosis and management guideline.

Phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency, traditionally known as phenylketonuria, results in the accumulation of phenylalanine in the blood of affected individuals and was the first inborn error of metabolism to be identified through population screening. Early identification and treatment prevent the most dramatic clinical sequelae of the disorder, but new neurodevelopmental and psychological problems have emerged in individuals treated from birth. The additional unanticipated recognition of a toxic effect of elevated maternal phenylalanine on fetal development has added to a general call in the

Predictors of tuberculosis (TB) and antiretroviral (ARV) medication non-adherence in public primary care patients in South Africa: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the downward trend in the absolute number of tuberculosis (TB) cases since 2006 and the fall in the incidence rates since 2001, the burden of disease caused by TB remains a global health challenge. The co-infection between TB and HIV adds to this disease burden. TB is completely curable through the intake of a strict anti-TB drug treatment regimen which requires an extremely high and consistent level of adherence. The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with adherence to anti-TB and HIV treatment drugs. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey method was used.

Using routinely collected hospital data for child maltreatment surveillance: issues, methods and patterns.

BACKGROUND: International data on child maltreatment are largely derived from child protection agencies, and predominantly report only substantiated cases of child maltreatment. This approach underestimates the incidence of maltreatment and makes inter-jurisdictional comparisons difficult. There has been a growing recognition of the importance of health professionals in identifying, documenting and reporting suspected child maltreatment. This study aimed to describe the issues around case identification using coded morbidity data, outline methods for selecting and grouping relevant codes, and

The recurrent laryngeal nerve related to thyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic injury of inferior laryngeal nerve is one of the most serious concerns in thyroid surgery. Paralysis of vocal cords is a common sequela of thyroidectomy. It represents a serious complication inducing, when bilateral, serious functional sequelae such as phonatory, respiratory and psychological problems that limit working capacities and social relationships of patients. We carried out an intraoperative study aimed to define anatomical relationships between the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the adjacent structures (the inferior thyroid artery in particular), intraoperative

Development and content validation of an anxiety-specific mental health literacy promotion programme for higher education students.

BACKGROUND: Mental health issues among higher education students are a major public health concern, with anxiety among the most common. Anxiety can have negative academic, psychological, and social effects, including poorer academic performance and lower well-being. Despite its high prevalence, help-seeking remains limited, partly due to low mental health literacy (MHL), stigma, and difficulty recognising and interpreting symptoms. While MHL promotion programmes are available, few anxiety-specific interventions have been co-created with students and subjected to expert content validation in hi

Domain-informed density extraction for robust mental health classification of long social media posts.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) have enabled the early identification of mental disorders from social media content. Among such platforms, Reddit is characterized by linguistically rich, long-form narratives in which users describe their psychological symptoms, emotions, and personal experiences. However, these datasets present significant challenges for text classification because the posts are lengthy, voluminous, and class-imbalanced. In this study, we revisit the concept of a segmentation-based, expression-weighted representation that e

Digital Sleep Disruption: Unraveling the Network Structure of Technology Use and Sleep Problems Through Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems have emerged as a critical health concern in the digital age, yet the complex mechanisms linking technology use to sleep disruption remain poorly understood. Previous research has typically examined isolated relationships between specific technological behaviors and sleep outcomes, overlooking the complex interplay among various digital factors. This study aims to address this gap by employing network analysis to investigate the interconnected relationships among multiple technology-related factors and their collective influence on sleep problems. METHODS: Using net

Healthcare burden of treated gastroesophageal reflux disease among U.S. adults, 2018-2023: a pooled cross-sectional analysis of the medical expenditure panel survey.

BACKGROUND: U.S. evidence combining healthcare expenditure, utilization and patient-reported burden in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) within one nationally representative framework is limited. Because survey condition records capture only medically attended disease, we quantified the burden of a treated, event-linked reflux condition record. METHODS: We pooled the 2018-2023 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey Household Component. Since 2018 a condition enters the MEPS Medical Conditions File only when linked to a medical event or prescribed-medicine purchase, so the exposure is a treated

[Recent advances on effects of sleep quality, duration, and circadian rhythm disruption on in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer outcomes].

Despite the widespread use of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET), the clinical pregnancy rate per oocyte retrieval cycle remains approximately 25%, making the identification of modifiable factors to improve success rates remains a clinical priority. Sleep disorders are highly prevalent among IVF-ET patients and their partners, with reported rates up to 91.1%, representing a substantial but often overlooked risk factor for IVF-ET outcomes. This review systematically examines the impact of sleep quality, sleep duration, and circadian rhythm on IVF-ET outcomes and discusses the u

Chronic fatigue syndrome in nursing practice: a concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are essential in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) management, serving as care coordinators and patient advocates, but currently lack a unified guiding framework. CFS affects about 0.89% of the global population based on CDC-1994 criteria, with higher prevalence in women. Since its initial definition in 1988, over 25 diagnostic criteria have been introduced, leading to ongoing confusion about core symptoms and diagnosis. This inconsistency poses significant challenges for nurses, including difficulties in patient identification, inconsistent assessment approaches, and lack of s

Preoperative Risk Evaluation for Cancer Treatment (PREdiCT): protocol for an international cohort study evaluating a trimodal screening tool to predict outcomes following gastrointestinal cancer surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal cancer surgery commonly leads to postoperative complications and other adverse outcomes. While prehabilitation shows promise in reducing adverse postoperative outcomes, most hospitals have resource limitations that preclude its use as standard of care. Additionally, the need to expedite surgery from diagnosis often creates a narrow window for prehabilitation initiatives. Online, self-reported screening tools may address these challenges by facilitating early identification of high-risk patients and enabling targeted preoperative interventions, thereby allowing eq
