Automated landmarking and labeling of fully and partially scanned spinal columns in CT images.

The spinal column is one of the most distinguishable structures in CT scans of the superior part of the human body. It is not necessary to segment the spinal column in order to use it as a frame of reference. It is sufficient to place landmarks and the appropriate anatomical labels at intervertebral disks and vertebrae. In this paper, we present an automated system for landmarking and labeling spinal columns in 3D CT datasets. We designed this framework with two goals in mind. First, we relaxed input data requirements found in the literature, and we label both full and partial spine scans. Sec

Integrating functional and structural images for simultaneous cardiac segmentation and deformation recovery.

Because of their physiological meaningfulness, cardiac physiome models have been used as constraints to recover patient information from medical images. Although the results are promising, the parameters of the physiome models are not patient-specific, and thus affect the clinical relevance of the recovered information especially in pathological cases. In view of this problem, we incorporate patient information from body surface potential maps in the physiome model to provide a more patient-specific while physiological plausible guidance, which is further coupled with patient measurements deri

First results from the high-resolution mouseSPECT annular scintillation camera.

High-resolution single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging in small animals tends to use long imaging times and large injected doses due to the poor sensitivity of single pinhole gamma cameras. To increase sensitivity while maintaining spatial resolution, we designed and constructed a multipinhole collimator array to replace the parallel hole collimators of a Ceraspect human SPECT brain scanner. The Ceraspect scanner is composed of an annular NaI(TI) crystal within which the eight pinhole collimators (1-mm-diameter holes) rotate while projecting nonoverlapping images of the obj

Diagnostic value of HRCT and 3DCT in the assessment of chronic maxillary sinusitis.

In a group of 37 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis in whom CT examination had been performed diagnostic value of secondary spatial reconstructions and high-resolution sections was analysed. It was found that the supplementation of standard CT examination with high-resolution sections and spatial pictures increases diagnostic possibilities in the assessment of maxillary sinusitis as for recognising, differentiating and determining anatomical etiologic factors.

Evaluation of computer-assisted quantification of carotid artery stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of advanced software assistance on the assessment of carotid artery stenosis; particularly, the inter-observer variability of readers with different level of experience is to be investigated. Forty patients with suspected carotid artery stenosis received head and neck dual-energy CT angiography as part of their pre-interventional workup. Four blinded readers with different levels of experience performed standard imaging interpretation. At least 1 day later, they performed quantification using an advanced vessel analysis software including

Differentiation of gastric ulcers with MDCT.

It is important to differentiate malignant from benign gastric ulcers (GUs) because the early detection of malignancy offers the best prognosis and is essential for planning optimal therapy. However, the differential diagnosis between a malignant and benign gastric ulcer is sometimes difficult, and remains a great challenge. Recent advances in multidetector row-computed tomography (MDCT) with three-dimensional imaging software and multiplanar reformatted (MPR) images provide a potentially powerful tool for noninvasive gastric evaluation. Virtual gastroscopy (VG) is helpful in the detection and

Analysis of lesion detectability in Bayesian emission reconstruction with nonstationary object variability.

Bayesian methods based on the maximum a posteriori principle (also called penalized maximum-likelihood methods) have been developed to improve image quality in emission tomography. To explore the full potential of Bayesian reconstruction for lesion detection, we derive simplified theoretical expressions that allow fast evaluation of the detectability of a lesion in Bayesian reconstruction. This work is builded on the recent progress on the theoretical analysis of image properties of statistical reconstructions and the development of numerical observers. We explicitly model the nonstationary va

Differentiation Between Glioblastoma and Metastatic Disease on Conventional MRI Imaging Using 3D-Convolutional Neural Networks: Model Development and Validation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Imaging-based differentiation between glioblastoma (GB) and brain metastases (BM) remains challenging. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of 3D-convolutional neural networks (CNN) to address this binary classification problem. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T1-CE, T2WI, and FLAIR 3D-segmented masks of 307 patients (157 GB and 150 BM) were generated post resampling, co-registration normalization and semi-automated 3D-segmentation and used for internal model development. Subsequent external validation was performed on 59 cases (27 GB and 32 BM) from another institution. F

3D CT cinematic rendering of the spleen: Potential role in problem solving.

Cinematic rendering (CR) is a new 3D visualization methodology for volumetric diagnostic imaging including computed tomography (CT) datasets composed of isotropic voxels. CR produces photorealistic images with enhanced detail relative to other 3D visualization methods and realistic shadowing. In this review, we provide a number of examples of splenic pathology visualized with CR including conditions affecting the splenic vasculature, neoplasms, and accessory spleens. These examples are compared to 2D CT and traditional 3D CT techniques and the potential advantages of CR are highlighted. CR dis

A Mixed-Effects Model with Time Reparametrization for Longitudinal Univariate Manifold-Valued Data.

Mixed-effects models provide a rich theoretical framework for the analysis of longitudinal data. However, when used to analyze or predict the progression of a neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease, these models usually do not take into account the fact that subjects may be at different stages of disease progression and the interpretation of the model may depend on some implicit reference time. In this paper, we propose a generative statistical model for longitudinal data, described in a univariate Riemannian manifold setting, which estimates an average disease progression model

Complex lung motion estimation via adaptive bilateral filtering of the deformation field.

Estimation of physiologically plausible deformations is critical for several medical applications. For example, lung cancer diagnosis and treatment requires accurate image registration which preserves sliding motion in the pleural cavity, and the rigidity of chest bones. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a novel approach for regularisation of non-linear transformations derived from a bilateral filter. For this purpose, the classic Gaussian kernel is replaced by a new kernel that smoothes the estimated deformation field with respect to the spatial position, intensity and defo

A new formula for rapid assessment of pericardial effusion volume by computed tomography.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate a new formula for the rapid assessment of pericardial effusion (PE) volume by computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty computed tomographic scans positive for PE were reviewed by two observers. Diameters of PE were measured at four locations. Additionally, PE volume was assessed by volumetry. The correlation between PE diameters and volume was evaluated, and a linear equation was derived for each diameter location. To test validity and reliability of the measurements, intraclass correlation and Bland-Altman analysis wer

A rare coronary artery anomaly: duplication of right coronary artery with separate ostium on 64-row multidetector computed tomography.

Coronary artery anomalies are rare, and their incidence varies from 0.6% to 1.3%. Conventional angiography is a commonly used modality for the assessment of coronary artery anomalies, but it may not identify and define the anatomy of anomalous arteries due to the complexity of the course and three-dimensional orientation of the arteries. We present a rare case of duplicated right coronary artery (RCA) with separate ostium on 64-row multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). MDCT is better than conventional angiography in cases where selective catheterisation of either a single artery or ostium

An inverse method for imaging the local elasticity of atherosclerotic coronary plaques.

The rupture of thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) plaques is a major cause of acute coronary events. A TCFA has a trombogenic soft lipid core, shielded from the blood stream by a thin, possibly inflamed, stiff cap. The majority of atherosclerotic plaques resemble a TCFA in terms of overall structural composition, but have a more complex, heterogeneous morphology. An assessment of the material distribution is vital for quantifying the plaque's mechanical stability and for determining the effect of plaque-stabilizing pharmaceutical agents. We describe a new automated inverse elasticity method, intrav

Task-specific functional brain geometry from model maps.

In this paper we propose model maps to derive and represent the intrinsic functional geometry of a brain from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data for a specific task. Model maps represent the coherence of behavior of individual fMRI-measurements for a set of observations, or a time sequence. The maps establish a relation between individual positions in the brain by encoding the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal over a time period in a Markov chain. They represent this relation by mapping spatial positions to a new metric space, the model map. In this map the Euclidean di
