Associations between epicardial adipose tissue, subclinical atherosclerosis and high-density lipoprotein composition in type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of cardiovascular complications in people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) remains unclear. An increase in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and alterations in the composition of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) are associated with coronary artery disease, but information on its relationship in T1DM is very limited. Our aim was to determine the association between EAT volume, subclinical atherosclerosis, and HDL composition in type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Seventy-two long-term patients with T1DM without clinical atherosclerosis were analyzed. EAT volume and subclinical ath

Virtual non-contrast series of photon-counting detector computed tomography angiography for aortic valve calcium scoring.

The aim of our study was to evaluate two different virtual non-contrast (VNC) algorithms applied to photon counting detector (PCD)-CT data in terms of noise, effectiveness of contrast media subtraction and aortic valve calcium (AVC) scoring compared to reference true non-contrast (TNC)-based results. Consecutive patients underwent TAVR planning examination comprising a TNC scan, followed by a CTA of the heart. VNC series were reconstructed using a conventional (VNCconv) and a calcium-preserving (VNCpc) algorithm. Noise was analyzed by means of the standard deviation of CT-values within the lef

Accuracy of predicted orthogonal projection angles for valve deployment during transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: Multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) predicted orthogonal projection angles have been introduced to guide valve deployment during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Our aim was to investigate the accuracy of MDCT prediction methods versus actual angiographic deployment angles. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 2 currently used MDCT methods: manual multiplanar reformations (MR) and the semiautomatic optimal angle graph (OAG). Paired analysis was used to compare the 2-dimensional distributions and means. RESULTS: We included 101 patients with a mean (±SD) age of 8

Contrast inhomogeneity in CT angiography of the abdominal aortic aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: If undetected, infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) growth can lead to rupture, a high-mortality complication. Some AAA patients exhibit inhomogeneous luminal contrast attenuation at first-pass CT angiography (CTA). This study assesses the association between this observation and aneurysm growth. METHODS: Sixty-seven consecutive pre-repair AAA CTAs were included in this retrospective study. The "Gravitational Gradient" (GG), defined as the ratio of the mean attenuation in a region-of-interest placed posteriorly to that in a region-of-interest placed anteriorly within the lum

The impact of epicardial adipose tissue quantification by computed tomography on predicting postoperative outcomes in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.

PURPOSE: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) modulates cardiovascular risk, but its surgical implications remain unclear. We investigated whether CT-quantified EAT predicts postoperative outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed isolated CABG patients (2017-2024) with preoperative CT. EAT volume and thickness were measured using semi-automated segmentation. Primary endpoints were correlation of EAT with postoperative clinical outcomes; sternal wound infection, renal insufficiency, cerebrovascular events, postoperative atrial f
