Deep Learning Based Evaluation of Spermatozoid Motility for Artificial Insemination.

We propose a deep learning method based on the Region Based Convolutional Neural Networks (R-CNN) architecture for the evaluation of sperm head motility in human semen videos. The neural network performs the segmentation of sperm heads, while the proposed central coordinate tracking algorithm allows us to calculate the movement speed of sperm heads. We have achieved 91.77% (95% CI, 91.11-92.43%) accuracy of sperm head detection on the VISEM (A Multimodal Video Dataset of Human Spermatozoa) sperm sample video dataset. The mean absolute error (MAE) of sperm head vitality prediction was 2.92 (95%

Detecting mTBI by Learning Spatio-temporal Characteristics of Widefield Calcium Imaging Data Using Deep Learning.

Early diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is of great interest to the neuroscience and medical communities. Widefield optical imaging of neuronal populations over the cerebral cortex in animals provides a unique opportunity to study injury-induced alternations in brain function. Using this technique, along with deep learning, the goal of this paper is to develop a framework for the detection of mTBI. Cortical activities in transgenic calcium reporter mice expressing GCaMP6s are obtained using widefield imaging from 8 mice before and after inducing an injury. Two deep learning model

Detection of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury via Topological Graph Embedding and 2D Convolutional Neural Networks.

Early diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is challenging, yet significantly important in order to grant the patients with timely treatment and mitigating the risks of possible long-term psychiatric and neurological disorders. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we develop an mTBI detection framework based on graph embedding features combined with convolutional neural networks (CNN). Cortical activity in transgenic calcium reporter mice expressing Thy1-GCaMP6s is recorded in two sessions, prior to and after inducing injury. Functional networks are then constructed for recordings

Dyslexia detection using 3D convolutional neural networks and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dyslexia is a disorder of neurological origin which affects the learning of those who suffer from it, mainly children, and causes difficulty in reading and writing. When undiagnosed, dyslexia leads to intimidation and frustration of the affected children and also of their family circles. In case no early intervention is given, children may reach high school with serious achievement gaps. Hence, early detection and intervention services for dyslexic students are highly important and recommended in order to support children in developing a positive self-esteem and reac

Scoring pleurisy in slaughtered pigs using convolutional neural networks.

Diseases of the respiratory system are known to negatively impact the profitability of the pig industry, worldwide. Considering the relatively short lifespan of pigs, lesions can be still evident at slaughter, where they can be usefully recorded and scored. Therefore, the slaughterhouse represents a key check-point to assess the health status of pigs, providing unique and valuable feedback to the farm, as well as an important source of data for epidemiological studies. Although relevant, scoring lesions in slaughtered pigs represents a very time-consuming and costly activity, thus making diffi

Development of an N-Cadherin Biofunctionalized Hydrogel to Support the Formation of Synaptically Connected Neural Networks.

In vitro models of the human central nervous system (CNS), particularly those derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), are becoming increasingly recognized as useful complements to animal models for studying neurological diseases and developing therapeutic strategies. However, many current three-dimensional (3D) CNS models suffer from deficits that limit their research utility. In this work, we focused on improving the interactions between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and iPSC-derived neurons to support model development. The most common ECMs used to fabricate 3D CNS models often

Artificial neural networks in the selection of shoe lasts for people with mild diabetes.

This research addressed the selection of shoe lasts for footwear design to help relieve the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy and foot ulcers. A reverse engineering (RE) technique was used to convert point clouds corresponding to scanned shoe lasts and diabetic foot data into stereo lithograph (STL) meshes. A slicing algorithm was developed and was used to find relevant girth features of diabetic foot and the shoe lasts. An artificial neural network, termed self-organizing map (SOM), classified 60 sets of shoe lasts into similar groups. Foot shapes of three mild diabetic patients were e

KeratoDetect: Keratoconus Detection Algorithm Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

Keratoconus (KTC) is a noninflammatory disorder characterized by progressive thinning, corneal deformation, and scarring of the cornea. The pathological mechanisms of this condition have been investigated for a long time. In recent years, this disease has come to the attention of many research centers because the number of people diagnosed with keratoconus is on the rise. In this context, solutions that facilitate both the diagnostic and treatment options are quickly needed. The main contribution of this paper is the implementation of an algorithm that is able to determine whether an eye is af

Deep Neural Network-Based Gait Classification Using Wearable Inertial Sensor Data.

Human gait has been regarded as a useful behavioral biometric trait for personal identification and authentication. This study aimed to propose an effective approach for classifying gait, measured using wearable inertial sensors, based on neural networks. The 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope data were acquired at the posterior pelvis, both thighs, both shanks, and both feet while 29 semi-professional athletes, 19 participants with normal foot, and 21 patients with foot deformities walked on the 20-meter straight path. The classifier based on the gait parameters and fully connected neu

Multi-indices quantification of optic nerve head in fundus image via multitask collaborative learning.

Multi-indices quantification of optic nerve head (ONH), measuring ONH appearance with multiple types of indices simultaneously from fundus images, is the most clinically significant tasks for accurate ONH assessment and ophthalmic disease diagnosis. However, no attempt has been reported due to its challenges of the large variation of fundus appearance across patients, heavy overlap and extremely weak contrast between optic nerve head areas. In this paper, we propose a multitask collaborative learning framework (MCL-Net) for multi-indices ONH quantification. The proposed MCL-Net, a two-branch n

Congestive Heart Failure Detection Via Short-Time Electrocardiographic Monitoring For Fast Reference Advice In Urgent Medical Conditions.

This study proposed a detection approach for the congestive heart failure (CHF) by short-time electrocardiographic monitoring. Recent literature only reported that RR intervals and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) indicated key hidden information to discriminate CHF groups from healthy controls. However whether it was possible to find certain short-time electrocardiographic monitoring duration for CHF clinical diagnoses, has not been well addressed. In the study, databases of 54 normal subjects and 15 CHF patients from PhysioNet were introduced. Signals were classified into variable assessment len

Nonlinear System Identification Based on Convolutional Neural Networks for Multiple Drug Interactions.

In heart failure patients, hemodynamics can be regulated by therapeutic drugs. Although the cardiovascular responses to these drugs usually include nonlinearity and drug interactions, it is difficult to identify the characteristics of the dynamics under such conditions. This study, therefore, was aimed at evaluating the technique used for nonlinear system identification based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). As an image i.e., pixel values corresponding to time-course data), CNN can be used to treat the complicated relation between previous inputs (i.e., drug infusions) and outputs i.e.,

Analysis of Features Extracted from EEG Epochs by Discrete Wavelet Decomposition and Hilbert Transform for Sleep Apnea Detection.

Sleep apnea (SA) is one of the most common disorders manifesting during sleep and the electroencephalo-gram (EEG) belongs to these biomedical signals that change during apnea and hypopnea episodes. In recent years, a few publications reported approaches to the automatic classification of sleep apnea episodes based only on the EEG. The purpose of this work was to analyze statistical features extracted from the EEG epochs by combined discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and Hilbert transform (HT). Additionally, the selected most discriminative 30 features were then used in the automatic classificati

Mapping the transmission risk of Zika virus using machine learning models.

Zika virus, which has been linked to severe congenital abnormalities, is exacerbating global public health problems with its rapid transnational expansion fueled by increased global travel and trade. Suitability mapping of the transmission risk of Zika virus is essential for drafting public health plans and disease control strategies, which are especially important in areas where medical resources are relatively scarce. Predicting the risk of Zika virus outbreak has been studied in recent years, but the published literature rarely includes multiple model comparisons or predictive uncertainty a

A Reading Model from the Perspective of Japanese Orthography: Connectionist Approach to the Hypothesis of Granularity and Transparency.

This study presents a computer simulation model of reading in Japanese syllabic kana and morphographic kanji. The model was based on the simulation model developed by Harm and Seidenberg for reading in English. The purpose of building the current model was to verify the validity of the hypothesis of granularity and transparency (HGT) postulated by Wydell and Butterworth, focusing on the granularity dimension. The HGT was developed in order to explain the behavioral dissociation between excellent reading skills in Japanese and poor reading skills in English of an English-Japanese bilingual indi

Investigation of rat exploratory behavior via evolving artificial neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Neuroevolution comprises the use of evolutionary computation to define the architecture and/or to train artificial neural networks (ANNs). This strategy has been employed to investigate the behavior of rats in the elevated plus-maze, which is a widely used tool for studying anxiety in mice and rats. NEW METHOD: Here we propose a neuroevolutionary model, in which both the weights and the architecture of artificial neural networks (our virtual rats) are evolved by a genetic algorithm. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S): This model is an improvement of a previous model that involves

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for acoustic analysis of 4-channel phonocardiograms using empirical mode decomposition.

The heart's mechanical activity can be appraised by auscultation recordings, taken from the 4-Standard Auscultation Areas (4-SAA), one for each cardiac valve, as there are invisible murmurs when a single area is examined. This paper presents an effective approach for cardiac murmur detection based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) over acoustic representations derived from Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) of 4-channel phonocardiograms (4-PCG). The 4-PCG database belongs to the National University of Colombia. Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficien
