Recent studies indicate that motor imagery is subserved by activation of motor information. However, at present it is not clear whether the sparing of motor efferent pathways is necessary to perform a motor imagery task. To clarify this issue, we required patients with a selective, severe de-efferentation (locked-in syndrome, LIS) to mentally manipulate hands and three-dimensional objects. Compared with normal controls, LIS patients showed a profound impairment on a modified version of the hand-laterality task and a normal performance on mental rotation of abstract items. Moreover, LIS patient

A large body of research has reported visual perception deficits in both people with dyslexia and autistic spectrum disorders. In this study, we compared form and motion coherence detection between a group of adults with high-functioning autism, a group with Asperger's disorder, a group with dyslexia, and a matched control group. It was found that motion detection was intact in dyslexia and Asperger. Individuals with high-functioning autism showed a general impaired ability to detect coherent form and motion. Participants with Asperger's syndrome showed lower form coherence thresholds than the

Phonological awareness, phonological memory, and phonological access to lexical storage play important roles in acquiring literacy. We examined the convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity of these phonological processing abilities (PPA) in 389 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the validity of each PPA as separate from general cognitive ability and separate from each other. Multigroup structural equation modeling (SEM) with mean structure demonstrated that older preschoolers have better developed latent PPA than younger preschoolers but that the s

This study examines (a) mathematical skills of 2 subgroups of children with developmental dyscalculia (DD)--1 group with DD only and a second group with DD plus reading disorders (RDD)-and (b) analyzes the memory skills of both groups of children. Fifty 11- and 12-year-old children were selected from public schools in Guadalajara, Mexico. Seventeen children had DD only, 13 had RDD, and 20 were normal controls. Testing included 10 calculation and 6 memory subtests taken from the Evaluación Neuropsicológica Infantil (Matute, Rosselli, Ardila, and Ostrosky, in press). Results indicated that child

Emotion identification appears to decline with age, and deficient visual scanning may contribute to this effect. Eye movements of 20 older adults (OAs) and 20 younger adults (YAs) with normal saccades were recorded while viewing facial expressions. OAs made fewer fixations overall, and they made a higher proportion of fixations to the lower halves of faces. Topographical distribution of fixations predicted better OA accuracy for identifying disgust than other negative emotions. Impaired OA accuracy for fear and anger was specific to vision, with normal identification of these emotions in the a

Cerebral dominance for language function was investigated with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM). The results were compared with those of the Wada test. SAM is a spatial filtering technique that enables demonstration of the spatiotemporal distribution of oscillatory changes (synchronization and desynchronization) in magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals elicited by specific brain activation. MEG was conducted during a silent reading task in 20 consecutive preoperative neurosurgical patients who also underwent a Wada test. The spatial distribution of oscillatory changes related to silent rea

The degree and nature of dyslexics' difficulties in performing basic visual tasks have been debated for more than thirty years. We recently found that dyslexics' difficulties in detecting temporally modulated gratings are specific to conditions that require accurate comparisons between sequentially presented stimuli [Brain 124 (2001) 1381]. We now examine dyslexics' spatial frequency discrimination (rather than detection), under simultaneous (spatial forced choice) and sequential (temporal forced choice) presentations. Sequential presentation (at SOAs of 0.5, 0.75 and 2.25 s) yielded better di

Slow event-related potentials (ERP) were examined in healthy and aphasic subjects in two-stimulus designs comprising a word comprehension and a rhyming task. Aphasics, though selected to perform above chance level, made significantly more errors and responded more slowly than controls, although canonical correlations did not indicate a statistical relationship between performance measures and ERP amplitudes. A discriminant analysis of ERP amplitudes distinguished the groups for the slow wave (SW; 0.5-1.0 s post-S1 onset) in the word comprehension, for the SW and the initial contingent negative

A patient with progressive posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) was examined on several tests of visual cognition. The patient displayed multiple visual cognitive deficits, which included problems identifying degraded stimuli, attending to two or more stimuli simultaneously, recognizing faces, tracing simple visual stimuli, matching simple shapes, and copying objects. The patient was also impaired in identifying visual targets contained at the global level within global-local stimuli (i.e., smaller letters that compose a larger letter). Although the patient denied any conscious awareness of the gl

Euthymic patients with bipolar disorder have been reported to show persistent deficits in sustained attention. However, the sustained attention task which was used also placed demands on working memory. Bipolar disorder patients in the euthymic state were therefore compared with healthy controls on two measures of sustained attention with and without a working memory component. Signal detection methodology was applied to the results. Euthymic patients with bipolar disorder were particularly impaired at detecting targets in the sustained attention task without a working memory component. This d

We describe an analysis of lexical processing performed in a patient with the acute onset of an isolated anomia. Based on a model of lexical processing, we evaluated hypotheses as to the source of the naming deficit. We observed impairments in oral and written picture naming and oral naming to definition with relatively intact semantic processing across input modalities, suggesting that output from the semantic system was impaired. In contrast to previous reports, we propose that this pattern represents an impairment that arises late in semantic processing prior to accessing mode-specific verb

To establish a simple hepatic function test, a five-point scoring system using 99mTc-galactosyl-human serum albumin (GSA) was applied to seventy-six patients with or suspected with hepatic dysfunction. Dynamic data at rest were obtained immediately and 30 minutes after intravenous bolus injection of 99mTc-GSA (185 MBq). Regions of interest (ROIs) were superimposed over the images of the liver and the entire heart. A visual analysis using a image taken 5 to 6 minutes after radiotracer injection was performed by the three observers blinded to the clinical information to assess their agreement or

We present evidence that semantic errors in object naming can arise not only from impairment to the semantic system but also from damage to input and output processes. Although each of these levels of disruption can result in similar types of semantic errors in object naming, they have different types of consequences for performance on other lexical tasks, such as comprehension and naming to definition. We show that the analysis of the co-occurrence of semantic errors in naming with different patterns of performance in other lexical processing tasks can be used to localise the source of semant

A quasi-experimental message-passing procedure was used to assess the validity of the facilitated communication (FC) by people with autism and mental retardation or with mental retardation. The 23 participants were classified as having intellectual skills within the range of severe to profound mental retardation. Message-passing consisted of showing and verbally labeling a picture of a familiar object with the facilitator absent, and subsequent facilitation to generate a label or description of the object. Three-trial blocks were conducted with each participant on two different days. Blocks we

Visual expectation was assessed in 103 black 6.5-month-olds using Haith, Hazan, and Goodman's paradigm and related to performance on standard developmental assessments and tests of information processing skill. As expected, percent anticipations was higher and RT lower than in 3.0-month-olds previously tested. Split-half and left-right correlations for the RT measures were moderate and similar to those previously reported, as was split-half reliability for percent anticipations. The 2 RT measures were related to fixation duration on both visual recognition memory (VRM) and cross-modal transfer

Two time-delay conditions for teaching complex visual discriminations to normal preschoolers and children with mild and moderate intellectual handicaps were compared. One condition involved spatially separating the distinctive components from the redundant parts of both stimuli (multiple dynamic distinctive-feature prompts). The other condition involved adding a colored field to the correct stimulus (single static nondistinctive-feature prompt). The effect of the latter condition was assessed with unlearned and learned tasks. The study consisted of four experiments. In one experiment, children

Left- and right-hand responses were studied in a patient who had undergone complete corpus callosotomy to examine selective hemispheric processing employing free-field stimuli. Tests of verbal and visual spatial processing were presented, and multiple choice performances were obtained using both left and right hands. A double dissociation emerged, with superior left-handed performance on visual spatial tasks, and better right-handed performance on verbal tasks. In addition, the patient displayed hemispatial dyscalculia in which he solved written arithmetic problems disregarding free-field nume

Three disorders of facial recognition and perception in acute schizophrenia and mescaline-induced psychosis are described and illustrated using original clinical and experimental material: "affective prosopagnosia" or stress-related dysfunctional face recognition; "physiognomization" of the environment or persistent illusions and hallucinations of nonspecific faces; and the "mirror phenomenon" or the experience of inner alienation from one's reflected face, which is perceived as independently alive, sinister, and generally physically distorted. It is proposed that neuropsychology suggests rela

Basic Emotion Theory (BET) proposes that a limited set of biologically based emotions, including anger and disgust, are expressed through universal prototypical facial configurations. However, research suggests that disgust is amongst the least accurately recognized basic emotions and is frequently confused with anger. Although perceptual-attentional accounts suggest that disgust-anger confusion arises from shared visual features and failures of attention to diagnostic cues, little is known about how these mechanisms evolve during childhood. Two major explanations have been proposed: conceptua

The most prevalent neurobiological theory of attentional control posits 2 distinct brain networks: The dorsal and ventral attention networks. The role of the dorsal attentional network in top-down attentional control is well established, but there is less evidence for the putative role of the ventral attentional network in initiating stimulus-driven reorienting. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging and dynamic causal modeling (DCM) to test the role of the ventral and dorsal networks in attentional reorienting during instances of attentional capture by a target-colored distracter
