Golden Oldies and New Top 10: Important Findings and Future Directions for Intimate Partner Violence Research.

In this brief article, which pays tribute to Langhinrichsen-Rohling's "Top 10 Greatest Hits" review of the intimate partner violence (IPV) literature, the authors comment on progress in 10 key areas and identify directions for future research and practice. These areas include (a) the role of substance use in IPV and the development of integrated IPV-substance use treatment; (b) animal abuse and its implications for shelter policy for women leaving abusive relationships; (c) the finding that coercive control is prevalent and the urgency to define, assess, and understand the impact of nonphysica

Navigating the CBD: How Urban Risk Environment Shapes Daily Life for People Who Use Drugs in Edmonton's Central Business District.

Public drug use in urban central business districts (CBDs) presents an urgent public health challenge in Canada. People who use drugs (PWUD) in CBDs navigate intersecting risks related to criminalization, stigma, hostile architecture, urban redevelopment, and limited access to essential services-factors that compound health disparities and increase morbidity and mortality. Yet CBDs also function as sites of informal social networks, mutual aid, and adaptive survival strategies that, while precarious, constitute critical resources for daily safety and belonging. This focused ethnographic study,

The Ottawa Charter in practice: community-led action to reduce health inequalities in the UK.

This article presents a practice-based case study illustrating how the action areas and strategies outlined in the Ottawa Charter can be put into practice and reduces neighbourhood-level health inequalities. The Priority Neighbourhood Development (PND) programme in Worcestershire focused on small, high-need geographical areas identified through analyses of emergency hospital admissions and socio-economic data. Work in the socio-economically deprived Westlands housing area is described in detail. Community development workers mapped local assets and deficits, enabling residents to challenge sti

What legal protections are available to paramedics to prevent suicide? A review of case law concerning Section 41 of the Crimes Act 1961 (New Zealand).

AIM: With the reduction in police involvement in front-line mental health responses in New Zealand (implemented November 2024), this study evaluates the primary legal justification supporting paramedics in using force to prevent suicide: Section 41 of the Crimes Act 1961. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative analysis of 20 legal cases (1986-2023) identified through a systematic search. The analysis was structured thematically, focussing on the legal criteria for intervention, the role of de-escalation, the threshold for "reasonable force" and the unresolved conflict between intervention and pa…

Law enforcement-associated fatalities: Thirty years of data from the King County Medical Examiner's Office, Seattle, Washington.

Tracking law enforcement-associated fatalities is complicated by an absence of a national database. Death certificates often fail to report deaths due to law enforcement activity. Adopting recommendations by the National Association of Medical Examiners, the present study was conducted using records from the King County Medical Examiner's Office of all deaths associated with law enforcement, including deaths in correctional facilities, from 1995 to 2024. A total of 566 deaths were categorized as Pre-Custody (299) or In-Custody (267). Pre-Custody deaths were subcategorized into: Shooting (178),

A Temporal Comparison of 50 Years of Australian Scuba Diving Fatalities.

Australian scuba fatalities over 50 years were examined to determine temporal changes over two consecutive periods, 1972-1999 and 2000-2021. The Australasian Diving Safety Foundation database and National Coronial Information System were searched to identify scuba deaths from 1972 to 2021. Historical data, police and witness reports, and autopsies were recorded and comparisons made between the two periods. Of 430 total deaths, 236 occurred during 1972-1999 and 194 during 2000-2021, with average annual fatalities of 8.4 and 8.8, respectively. The proportion of males reduced (83% to 76%) and med…

Criminalizing public space through a decriminalization framework: The paradox of British Columbia, Canada.

This commentary explores a recent shift in British Columbia's drug policy under a novel drug "decriminalization" framework. We focus on the … t decision to recriminalize drug use in 2024, including attempts to criminalize recent drug use and police suspicion of substance use. These drug law reforms, understood here as forms of biopolitical violence, reflect a broader trend of using drug policies as tools for social and spatial regulation. By analyzing the sociolegal implications of these polic …

Perspectives of Canadian Healthcare and Harm Reduction Workers on Mobile Overdose Response Services: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Supervised consumption sites (SCS) are an evidence-based intervention proven effective for preventing drug overdose deaths. Obstacles to accessing SCS include stigma, limited hours of operation, concerns about policing, and limited geographic availability. Mobile overdose response services (MORS) are novel technologies that provide virtual supervised consumption to help reduce the risk of fatal overdoses, especially for those who use alone. MORS can take various forms, such as phone-based hotlines and mobile apps. The aim of this article is to assess the perceptions of MORS among h

Species and antifungal susceptibility profile of agents causing vulvovaginal candidiasis in a military population: a cross-sectional study.

Military women on active duty are exposed to constant physical and mental demands, which may predispose them to some infection risks, including vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), a pathology considered a global public health problem. To monitor the prevalent and emerging pathogens in VVC, this study aimed to evaluate the distribution of yeast species and their in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile. We studied 104 vaginal yeast specimens obtained during routine clinical examinations. The population was attended at the Medical Center of the Military Police, São Paulo, Brazil, and was divided i…

Investing in Community Care Is an Important Goal and Need for Eliminating Hepatitis C in the United States: An Abolitionist Perspective.

Recent nationwide racial justice uprisings following ongoing police violence against Black communities juxtaposed with the COVID-19 pandemic have increased the urgency for a reckoning around the ineffectiveness and harm caused by the carceral apparatus. It is well documented that the correctional system was founded upon and continues the legacy of slavery and white supremacy. Research has shown that incarceration directly contributes to many negative health outcomes, including increased risk and spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, especially among people who inject drugs. This high b…
