Disordered Aggression and Violence in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and correlates of DSM-5 intermittent explosive disorder and related aggressive disorders in the United States. METHODS: Community survey data (collected between 2001-2004) from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R) and Adolescent Supplement (NCS-AS) involving 10,148 adolescents and 9,282 adults, respectively, were reanalyzed with recurrent aggressive behavior defined as 3 serious aggressive outbursts in any given year. In addition to prevalence, assessments of aggression severity, property damage, injury to others, intimate partner assault,

Loot Boxes, Gambling, and Problem Gambling Among Young People: Results from a Cross-Sectional Online Survey.

With the introduction of gambling-like features within video games (e.g., loot boxes) new forms of hybrid-gambling products have emerged, yet little is known about their relationship to gambling and problem gambling among those most likely to engage: young people. This article examines the relationship between the purchase of loot boxes, gambling behavior, and problem gambling among young people ages 16-24. Cross-sectional data were analyzed from wave 1 of the Emerging Adults Gambling Survey, an online survey of 3,549 people, aged 16-24. Data were weighted to reflect the age, sex, and regional

Standardized Assessment of Relationship Functioning in Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans with PTSD.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is associated with difficulties in intimate relationships, with most prior research examining associations with continuous, single-dimension, and often-unstandardized measures of general relationship quality or aggression. Standardized, well-normed assessments that include multiple couple problem areas could provide more precise information about the presence and specific nature of clinically significant concerns in patient care settings. This investigation aimed to replicate findings regarding increased difficulties in relationship functioning among Operat

The Neurodevelopmental Basis of Early Childhood Disruptive Behavior: Irritable and Callous Phenotypes as Exemplars.

The arrival of the Journal's 175th anniversary occurs at a time of recent advances in research, providing an ideal opportunity to present a neurodevelopmental roadmap for understanding, preventing, and treating psychiatric disorders. Such a roadmap is particularly relevant for early-childhood-onset neurodevelopmental conditions, which emerge when experience-dependent neuroplasticity is at its peak. Employing a novel developmental specification approach, this review places recent neurodevelopmental research on early childhood disruptive behavior within the historical context of the Journal. The

Baseline Predictors of Singular Action Among Participants With Multiple Health Behavior Risks.

PURPOSE: Previous studies found that treatment effects can change two behaviors, but not one. This study examined baseline transtheoretical model constructs as three alternative predictors (stage of change, effort, and severity) of singular action among participants with co-occurring health behavior risks. DESIGN: The study examined participants at risk for three pairs of behaviors (sun and smoking; smoking and diet; and diet and sun). Analyses were conducted with participants who changed only one behavior in a pair (singular action). SETTING: School and home-based behavior change programs r

Walking a tightrope: meaningful encounters in the care for people with dementia and severely challenging behavior.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study examines interactions in residential care for people with dementia and severe challenging behavior. Approaching dementia as contextualized, lived experience, it explores how meaningful encounters can be fostered for residents and those directly involved in their life and care. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A phenomenological design informed by Todres' embodied enquiry was employed. Data were collected through intensive shadowing observations (35 hr) over a 2-week period in a Dutch closed long-term care facility accommodating 16 residents. The daily work of

Implementing Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) in Norway: An Open Multicentre Study.

BACKGROUND: Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is a well-established treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) with good empirical and research support, buttressed by studies conducted in several countries. However, its implementation has not yet been evaluated in Norway; for that reason, the aim of this study was to examine the outcomes associated with STEPPS in a Norwegian routine clinical setting. METHODS: An uncontrolled naturalistic study was conducted at three local hospitals using a sample of treatment-seeking patients who completed the

Problem-solving therapy versus supportive psychotherapy for Veterans with moderate suicide risk and chronic pain: A pilot randomized clinical trial.

Individuals with chronic pain have increased risk of suicide, however, few receive suicide prevention interventions. Problem-solving therapy is an evidence-based treatment for chronic pain that seeks to improve problem-solving ability, an executive function associated with suicide risk and related outcomes. The goal of this pilot randomized controlled trial was to estimate if problem-solving therapy improves problem-solving ability and other outcomes for Veterans with chronic pain and moderate suicide risk (n = 44). Veterans were randomized to receive 12-weeks of video delivered problem-solvin

Outcomes of an Intervention Programme for People With Intellectual Disabilities and Behavioural Concerns Based on Emotional Development.

BACKGROUND: This paper examines clinical outcomes of an approach to referrals for concerns about severe behavioural distress in people with intellectual disabilities (ID) that is based on the concepts of emotional development (EDev) and attachment. Due to research and clinical experiences suggesting that positive behaviour support (PBS) may have limited long-term impact, an alternative approach is proposed, which focuses on relational factors and emotional skills already held by carers. METHODOLOGY: We report the process and outcomes of a brief standardised assessment using the Scale of Emoti

Exploring the Use of Social Media for Medical Problem Solving by Analyzing the Subreddit r/medical_advice: Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The advent of the internet has transformed the landscape of health information acquisition and sharing. Reddit has become a hub for such activities, such as the subreddit r/medical_advice, affecting patients' knowledge and decision-making. While the popularity of these platforms is recognized, research into the interactions and content within these communities remains sparse. Understanding the dynamics of these platforms is crucial for improving online health information quality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to quantitatively analyze the subreddit r/medical_advice to characterize th

Longitudinally Predicting Behavioral Challenges From Executive Functioning in Youth With Down Syndrome.

This study explored how caregiver-reported executive functioning domains, assessed by the BRIEF2 at baseline, predicted behavioral challenges reported by caregivers using the CBCL six months later. The sample included 94 youth with Down syndrome, aged 6 to 18 years. Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that, after controlling for the effect of IQ, working memory significantly predicted inattentive behaviors, inhibition significantly predicted rule-breaking behaviors, and both inhibition and emotional control significantly predicted aggressive and externalizing behaviors. After

Clozapine for Treatment-Resistant Disruptive Behaviors in Youths With Autism Spectrum Disorder Aged 10-17 Years: Protocol for an Open-Label Trial.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition emerging in early childhood, characterized by core features such as sociocommunicative deficits and repetitive, rigid behaviors, interests, and activities. In addition to these, disruptive behaviors (DB), including aggression, self-injury, and severe tantrums, are frequently observed in pediatric patients with ASD. The atypical antipsychotics risperidone and aripiprazole, currently the only Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for severe DB in patients with ASD, often encounter therapeutic failure

Altered longitudinal trajectory of default mode network connectivity in healthy youth with subclinical depressive and posttraumatic stress symptoms.

The default mode network (DMN) plays a crucial role in internal self-processing, rumination, and social functions. Disruptions to DMN connectivity have been linked with early adversity and the emergence of psychopathology in adolescence and early adulthood. Herein, we investigate how subclinical psychiatric symptoms can impact DMN functional connectivity during the pubertal transition. Resting-state fMRI data were collected annually from 190 typically-developing youth (9-15 years-old) at three timepoints and within-network DMN connectivity was computed. We used latent growth curve modeling to

Substance-Related Problems in Adolescents with ADHD-Diagnoses: The Importance of Self-Reported Conduct Problems.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a known risk factor for substance-related problems (SRP) during adolescence, but the nature of this relationship and the importance of co-occurring conduct problems are not fully understood. METHODS: Data stem from a linked dataset between a large population-based survey conducted in 2012 of Norwegian adolescents aged 16 to 19, and registry-based data from specialized child and adolescent mental health services (n = 9,411). RESULTS: Adolescents with "ADHD + high conduct problems" had increased risk of SRP (odds ratios = 2.37-10.1

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom profiles among people who have experienced abuse: Findings from the NESARC-III study.

UNLABELLED: Greater recognition of diversity in psychological responses to traumatic events has led to increased exploration of posttrauma symptom typologies and risk factors for more "complex" presentations. OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify unique PTSD symptom profiles associated with the experience of physical and sexual abuse and to determine whether exposure in childhood, type of abuse, frequency of abuse and familial support were associated with profiles indicating increased symptom complexity. METHOD: We analyzed data from 6,769 American adults (M = 43.93 years, SD = 15.35, 70.9% fema

Environmental injustice and childhood lead exposure in peri-urban (ger) areas of Darkhan and Erdenet, Mongolia.

BACKGROUND: The ger ("tent city") areas in Mongolia are a product of rapid urbanization and transitional economic development combine with lack of institutional, administrative and financial capacity of governments to cope with the pace. These areas have become traps for inequities in social and environmental services and the associated effects on human health. Disparities in childhood lead exposure in such communities are largely unexplored. METHODS: We measured the concentrations of lead in blood of children, aged 4-7 years, in Erdenet (Orkhon Province) and Darkhan (Darkhan-Uul Province), t

Do neighborhood social processes moderate the etiology of youth conduct problems?

BACKGROUND: Prior work has robustly suggested that social processes in the neighborhood (i.e. informal social control, social cohesion, norms) influence child conduct problems (CP) and related outcomes, but has yet to consider how these community-level influences interact with individual-level genetic risk for CP. The current study sought to do just this, evaluating neighborhood-level social processes as etiologic moderators of child CP for the first time. METHODS: We made use of two nested samples of child and adolescent twins within the Michigan State University Twin Registry (MSUTR): 5649

Where Lies the Harm in Lottery Gambling? A Portrait of Gambling Practices and Associated Problems.

Lotteries are one of the most prevalent forms of gambling and generate substantial state revenues. They are also argued to be one of the least harmful forms of gambling. This paper is one of the first to examine exclusive lottery gamblers and compares their gambling patterns and problems as well other associated risky behaviours to those who are not exclusive lottery gamblers. Data were derived from two large surveys conducted with representative adult samples in France (n = 15,635) and Québec (n = 23,896). Participants were separated into two groups: exclusive lottery gamblers (ELGs) and non-

Externalizing behaviors among adopted children: A longitudinal comparison of preadoptive childhood sexual abuse and other forms of maltreatment.

Previous research has established that child sexual abuse (CSA) and other forms of child maltreatment can have lasting and profound implications for survivors in terms of externalizing symptomatology. Few studies, however, have examined long-term consequences of CSA and maltreatment among adopted children. Guided by a polyvictimization framework, the present study investigated: (a) rates of co-occurrence of pre-adoptive CSA and maltreatment among adopted children, and (b) the relative impact of pre-adoptive CSA and maltreatment on externalizing behaviors at 14 years post-adoption.
