Tuberculous spondylodiscitis (Pott's spine) is a complex extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis (TB) that poses significant medical challenges, characterized by vertebral destruction affecting approximately 2% of all TB cases. The management of this condition involves a multidisciplinary approach, with surgical intervention indicated for specific cases, including those with neurological complications, spinal instability, and kyphosis. We report a case of a 49-year-old female with a confirmed diagnosis of tuberculous spondylodiscitis who had undergone eight months of tuberculostatic thera

BACKGROUND: Classic Kaposi sarcoma (CKS) is a vascular sarcoma associated with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), which is known to be more common in Mediterranean elderly men and is characterized by indolent clinical behavior. Xinjiang province in China is considered an endemic region for Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), with higher incidence among adults of Kazak and Uyghur ethnicities. Cases of CKS are rarely reported in inland China. Here, we followed a case of CKS for 7 years in a patient of Miao ethnic background in southwestern China.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease mediated by a pro-inflammatory immune response. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced by immunization of mice with a myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) peptide emulsified in killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis-containing complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA-EAE) is used as a model of MS. Mycobacterium bovis BCG has been reported to ameliorate clinical symptoms of CFA-EAE, although the precise mechanism has not yet been documented. Since CFA-EAE uses adjuvant with mycobacterial antigens, mycobacterial antigen-speci

OBJECTIVE: Blood cultures and cultures of disc material are required to identify and treat bacterial agents responsible for septic spondylodiscitis, but these methods have limited sensitivities. We undertook this study to compare nonculture amplification-based DNA analysis with conventional culture of disc aspirate.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with spondylodiscitis, including 11 with a history of spinal surgery, presented with negative blood cultures and underwent percutaneous disc or epidural abscess puncture for bacterial diagnosis. Amplification by polymerase chain reaction was performed on

Within the last generation the application of major advances in drug therapy, intensive care, transfusion techniques, surgery, anaesthesia, and radiotherapy, together with a vast expansion of knowledge due to increased investigative facilities, have led to an unprecedented, dramatic and beneficial increase in the number of persons who would previously have died, or lived with severe handicaps, but can now be cured. Techniques have also been developed to prolong the lives of many people who are now able to enjoy several extra years of productive and meaningful existence, and to alleviate and im

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common causes of non-traumatic disability in young adults worldwide. MS pathophysiologies include the formation of inflammatory lesions, axonal damage and demyelination, and blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption. Coagulation proteins, including factor (F)XII, can serve as important mediators of the adaptive immune response during neuroinflammation. Indeed, plasma FXII levels are increased during relapse in relapsing-remitting MS patients, and previous studies showed that reducing FXII levels was protective in a murine model of MS, experimental autoimmune ence

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differences between tuberculous spondylitis (TS) and brucellar spondylitis (BS) on magnetic resonance images (MRI).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Both TS and BS are common spinal affections and can cause deformities and permanent neurologic deficiencies without prompt diagnosis and treatment. However, differentiating the types of spondylitis clinically and radiographically is challenging. Despite the diagnosis studies on spine infection throughout the literature, the outcome has not been established. Our study abo

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively investigate the rate of neurological recovery and patient reported outcome of tuberculosis (TB) spine patients following surgery at a tertiary referral hospital. TB spine remains a major cause of neurological impairment in the developing world fuelled by poor socio-economic conditions and HIV co-infection. Although numerous retrospective studies are available, there is a paucity of prospective data regarding rate of neurological improvement and patient reported outcome.
METHODS: Twenty adult patients were prospectively recruited. The average age was 44.5 years. Hal

Since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy there has been an improvement in the quality of life for people with HIV infection. Despite the progress made, about 70% of HIV patients develop neurologic complications. These originate either in the central or the peripheral nervous system (Sacktor, 2002). These neurologic disorders are divided into primary and secondary disorders. The primary disorders result from the direct effects of the virus and include HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), HIV-associated vacuolar myelopathy (VM), and distal symmetric polyneuropathy
