OBJECTIVE: Youth who experience interpersonal trauma and have posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) develop cognitive deficits that impact their development. Our goal is to investigate the function of the hippocampus in adolescents with PTSS during a memory processing task.
METHODS: Twenty-seven adolescents between the ages of 10-17 years (16 with PTSS and 11 healthy controls) encoded and retrieved visually presented nouns (Verbal Declarative Memory Task) while undergoing fMRI scanning.
RESULTS: The PTSS group demonstrated reduced activation of the right hippocampus during the retrieval compo

This study investigated the temporal stability and longitudinal replicability of visual and auditory sensory processes found to be poor in children with dyslexia. Seventy children with dyslexia and 52 normal readers were tested twice, 9 months apart, on measures of visual and auditory sensory processing and on phonological and orthographic skills. About 30% of children with dyslexia were found to have sensory deficits. Associations were found between sensory and cognitive skills. Based on analyses of agreement, the temporal stability of the sensory tasks was poor. Future research should develo

In semantic dementia (SD), there is a correlation between performance on semantic tasks such as picture naming and lexical tasks such as reading aloud. However, there have been a few case reports of patients with spared reading despite profound semantic impairment. These reports have sparked an ongoing debate about how the brain processes conceptual versus lexical knowledge. One possibility is that there are two functionally distinct systems in the brain-one for semantic and one for lexical processing. Alternatively, there may be a single system involved in both. We present a computational inv

We report the case of a patient with selective topographic orientation deficits in both familiar and novel environments after bilateral medial occipital infarctions. Extensive neuropsychological assessment revealed intact functioning in all other cognitive domains. The findings are interpreted in terms of a dissociation between the retrosplenial posterior cingulate and the superior parietal lobule in the right hemisphere.

The role of the cerebellum in cognitive functions has been under debate. We investigated the neuropsychological functioning of patients with cerebellar lesions (infarcts) and evaluated the significance of laterality in cognitive symptoms. Twenty-six patients with exclusive cerebellar lesions as verified by clinical and neuroradiological findings underwent a neuropsychological assessment at the acute stage and at 3 months. Their performance was compared with 14 controls, also assessed twice. The focus was on four domains: visuospatial/motor functions, episodic memory, working memory and attenti

OBJECTIVES: Impaired verbal declarative memory has been proposed as a trait marker for adult bipolar disorder. However, similar impairments in juvenile-onset bipolar disorder have not been yet documented. Here, we assessed declarative memory in a large sample of clinically well-characterized children with bipolar disorder.
METHODS: Forty-one children and adolescents with bipolar disorder [21 bipolar I disorder (BP-I), 10 bipolar II disorder (BP-II), and 10 bipolar disorder, not otherwise specified (BP-NOS)] and 17 demographically matched healthy participants completed a standardized learning

We investigated the prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) without overt neurological involvement. The influence of disease duration, disease activity, prednisone dosage, and anxiety and depression levels was evaluated. Twenty-six consecutive BD outpatients and 26 healthy controls matched for age, education and sex completed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including tests of memory, visuospatial and constructional abilities, language, attention and psychomotor speed, non-verbal reasoning and executive functioning. The digits forward (DF) and backward (DB) tasks are widely used neuropsychological measures believed to tap overlapping systems of phonological processing and working memory. Studies of focal brain lesions have partially elucidated the brain regions essential for these tasks; however relatively little information exists on the underlying functional neuroanatomy in the intact brain. We therefore examined the shared and separate neural systems of these tasks in two positron emission tomography (PET) experiments. In Experiment 1, eight healthy participants performed verbal DF, DB, and a sensorimo

Previous studies using the process dissociation and the remember-know procedures led to conflicting conclusions regarding the effects of anterograde amnesia on recollection and familiarity. We argue that these apparent contradictions arose because different models were used to interpret the results and because differences in false-alarm rates between groups biased the estimates provided by those models. A reanalysis of those studies with a dual-process signal-detection model that incorporates response bias revealed that amnesia led to a pronounced reduction in recollection and smaller but cons

The role of the fornix for episodic memory processing is still a matter of controversy. A juvenile patient of average post-surgical intelligence with fornical damage due to tumor removal is described. The fornix was damaged bilaterally at the level of the fornical columns. The patient thereafter suffered major anterograde amnesia which was most pronounced in tests using long delays (e.g., in the delayed recall index of the revised Wechsler Memory Scale). Amnesia was a prominent on the verbal as on the nonverbal level. Attention, concentration and short term memory abilities were preserved. Cog

This multiple case report presents two groups of survivors from aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA); amnesic and non-amnesics, to examine the similarities and differences in neuropsychological profiles. All six patients were consecutive admissions to acute inpatient rehabilitation, and exhibited generally intact attention, concentration and intellectual ability. Confabulation and personality changes were observed only among the amnesic ACoA patients. However, difficulties in concept formation and perseverative responding was observed in all subjects. A neurobehavioral hypothe

BACKGROUND: To determine whether treatment of intestinal parasitic infections improves cognitive function in school-aged children, we examined changes in cognitive testscores over 18 months in relation to: (i) treatment-related Schistosoma japonicum intensity decline, (ii) spontaneous reduction of single soil-transmitted helminth (STH) species, and (iii) ≥2 STH infections among 253 S. japonicum-infected children.
METHODOLOGY: Helminth infections were assessed at baseline and quarterly by the Kato-Katz method. S. japonicum infection was treated at baseline using praziquantel. An intensity-base

During a health supervision visit, the father of a 7.5-year-old African American second-grader asked about his son's progress in reading. He was concerned when, at a recent teacher-parent conference to review Darren's progress, the teacher remarked that Darren was not keeping up with reading skills compared with others in his class. She said that he had difficulty sounding out some words correctly. In addition, he could not recall words he had read the day before. The teacher commented that Darren was a gregarious, friendly child with better-than-average verbal communication skills. His achiev

Children under age 6 or 7 quantify over objects of a single kind in ways that differ markedly from adults. For example, shown three pieces of a single fork and one whole fork, children say there are four forks, and not one or two forks. Here we explore why children exhibit these phenomena as well as motivating hypotheses of what's changing over ages 5 through 8. We note that partitive language such as "two pieces of a fork" specifies atoms of quantification and provides a context in which a piece of a fork is not a fork. We hypothesize that while children begin learning partitive language earl

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, care homes for older adults in England implemented isolation, social distancing and other restriction measures to help protect residents from contracting the virus. Little was known about the physical and psychological impacts that these measures would have upon residents and their relatives.
AIM: To explore the experiences of residents and their relatives of living restricted lives during the pandemic.
METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted as part of a 12-month, mixed-methods, phased design. From six purposively sampled care homes in England
