Stapedectomy and vertigo.

The relationship between vestibular and cochlear function in stapedectomy was investigated in 722 patients (925 ears). There were no differences in hearing between patients with and without pre-operative complaints of vertigo. Post-operatively patients with long lasting vertigo obtained equally good hearing results as the others. The direction of spontaneous nystagmus post-operatively in relation to the operated ear was of no prognostic significance regarding short term hearing results. However, at follow-up an average of 15 years after the operation, hearing was somewhat poorer in those havin

Functional activities essential for space exploration performed in partial gravity during parabolic flight.

Test subjects were assessed in a partial gravity environment during parabolic flight while they performed mission-critical activities that challenged their balance and locomotion. These functional activities included rising from a seated position and walking, jumping down, recovering from falls, and maintaining an upright stance. Twelve volunteers were tested during 10 parabolas that produced 0.25×g, 0.5×g, or 0.75×g, and at 1×g during level flight intervals between parabolas. Additionally, 14 other subjects were tested using identical procedures in a 1×g laboratory setting. Partial gravity al

Virtual Reality and Head Movements Across Different Planes: Investigating the Association Between Post-Exposure Symptoms and Dynamic Visual Acuity.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate how visual acuity resulting from head motions in three planes (roll, yaw, and pitch) may affect the intensity of symptoms that follow exposure to virtual reality (VR) in healthy people. METHOD: Static visual acuity and dynamic visual acuity (DVA) values of all participants were measured within the DVA test battery. After that, they were instructed to be exposed to VR tools for 20 min. Last, the Turkish version of the Virtual Reality Sickness Questionnaire (VRSQ) was used to evaluate the intensity of symptoms following VR. The associations among age, sym

Shift in lateralization during illusory self-motion: EEG responses to visual flicker at 10 Hz and frequency-specific modulation by tACS.

Self-motion perception is a key aspect of higher vestibular processing, suggested to rely upon hemispheric lateralization and alpha-band oscillations. The first aim of this study was to test for any lateralization in the EEG alpha band during the illusory sense of self-movement (vection) induced by large optic flow stimuli. Visual stimuli flickered at alpha frequency (approx. 10 Hz) in order to produce steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs), a robust EEG measure which allows probing the frequency-specific response of the cortex. The first main result was that differential lateralizat

Effect of succimer chelation therapy on postural balance and gait outcomes in children with early exposure to environmental lead.

This study investigated the influence of succimer chelation therapy in eliminating and/or minimizing lead-associated impairments of motor functions such as postural balance and locomotion or gait activities. In this study, postural balance and functional locomotion or gait were quantitated in 161 children in Cincinnati enrolled in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind clinical trial. In comparison to the placebo group, the succimer therapy group showed significantly decreased postural sway during dynamic task performance implying improved postural balance. The results from locomotion

A Quantitative Study of the Head Pitching Test for Lateral Canal BPPV.

OBJECTIVES: Lateral semicircular canal BPPV (LSC-BPPV) is diagnosed with the Head Yaw Test (HYT) by observing nystagmus direction and comparing the nystagmus intensity on both sides according to Ewald's laws. Head Pitching Test (HPT) is a diagnostic maneuver performed in the upright position by bending the patient's head forward (bowing) and backward (leaning) and observing the evoked nystagmus. We aimed to assess the sensitivity of HPT in correctly diagnosing LSC-BPPV through the quantitative measurement of Bowing and Leaning nystagmus slow-phase velocity (SPV). METHODS: One hundred cases of

[Vertigo and a role of neurovisual methods in it etiology and diagnosis].

Investigation of vestibular system using a standard method of electro-nystagmography in complex otoneurologic examination does not provide enough information on the etiology of vestibular analyzer lesion, location and diffusion of the pathological process. Neurovisual methods, in particular MRI and CT, have demonstrated high diagnostic validity in such pathological states as tumors of pons cerebellum and posterior focca; infarctions in the stem and cerebellum regions. The study revealed a role of MRI and CT in etiology of vertigo and lesions of cochleovestibular analyzer. One hundred thirty pa
