The impact of hearing loss on tinnitus-related brain reorganization: evidence from multimodal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Whether hearing loss fundamentally alters tinnitus-related brain reorganization remains unclear. To address this issue, this stu … or (FWE)-corrected P<0.05]. Additionally, the TIN + HL group showed decreased ALFF in the bilateral caudate nucleus (CN) and decreased ReHo in the right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and middle frontal gyrus (MFG), while the TIN - HL group exhibited decreased ReHo in the right rectus gyrus. Compared with the HC group, both tinnitus groups showed reduced FC between …

Projectomic profiles of calbindin D28K-expressing neurons in the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus of mouse.

Expression of calbindin D28K (CB) and parvalbumin (PV) distinguishes matrix and core type thalamic neurons, respectively, in primates. Whether the nice correspondence of intracellular calcium binding proteins and matrix/core neuron types translates to mouse remains unknown. Sixty reconstructed 3D mediodorsal thalamic nuclear neurons (MDCalb1 neurons), defined by calb1, the gene encoding CB in mouse MD, were mapped onto Allen Mouse Brain Common Coordinate Framework (CCFv3). Most MDCalb1 neurons (54/60) were isocortex-projecting ones, possessing collateral connections with caudate putamen (CP).

Dose-dependent power and connectivity modulation of low frequency oscillations through transcranial magnetic stimulation in non-human primates.

In particular, the … hanges in a 1-13 Hz range at contacts close to the stimulation site in the prefrontal cortex (e.g., caudate nucleus, anterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex) as well as contacts that were more distal (e.g., posterior cingulate cortex, temporal lobe). Prenatal exposure to extreme ambient heat may amplify the adverse impact of Superstorm Sandy on basal ganglia volume among school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Weather-related stressors on healthy brain development has become an important topic in recent years. Notably, prenatal stress exposure to natural disasters may disrupt child neurodevelopment, with recent research exploring its impact on child brain morphology. Prenatal exposure to extreme weather events, such as ambient heat, may also affect child brain morphology. The basal ganglia, while historically related to motor ability, has gained increasing attention for its role in various non-motor functions, such as emotion regulation. Leveraging an existing cohort with and without pre

Transcriptomic Analysis of the Human Habenula in Schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to define the molecular neuroanatomy of the human habenula (Hb) and identify transcriptomic differences between brains of individuals with schizophrenia and nonpsychiatric control brains. METHODS: This study utilized Hb-enriched postmortem human brain tissue. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) was conducted to identify molecularly defined Hb cell types (N=7 donors), and single-molecule fluorescent in situ hybridization (smFISH) was performed to validate cell types and map their spatial locations (N=5 independent donors). Bulk RNA sequencing (R

Altered neural signalling during reward anticipation in children and early adolescents with high psychotic-like experiences.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is associated with abnormalities in neurodevelopmental processes. Furthermore, dysfunctional neural circuits involved in reward processing may be linked to the development of symptoms in schizophrenia and are predictive of long-term functional outcome. It is however unknown whether neural signatures of reward anticipation are detectable in children with high psychotic-like experiences. METHODS: Using data from the ABCD study 4.1, we defined a healthy control (N = 50) and a high psychotic-like experience (N = 50) group with a Prodromal Psychosis Syndrome (PPS) score >

Cystatin C Attenuates Perihematomal Secondary Brain Injury by Inhibiting the Cathepsin B/NLRP3 Signaling Pathway in a Rat Model of Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

Secondary brain injury (SBI) is a noticeable contributor to the high mortality and morbidity rates associated with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and effective treatment options remain limited. Cystatin C (CysC) emerges as a novel candidate for SBI intervention. The therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of CysC in mitigating SBI following ICH were explored in the current research. An in vivo ICH rat model was established by injecting autologous blood into the right caudate nucleus. Western blotting (WB) was utilized to assess the levels of CysC, cathepsin B (CTSB), and the NLRP3 infla…

Painful stimulation increases functional connectivity between supplementary motor area and thalamus in patients with small fibre neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: The lead symptom of small fibre neuropathy (SFN) is neuropathic pain. Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have indicated central changes in SFN patients of different etiologies. However, less is known about brain functional connectivity during acute pain processing in idiopathic SFN. METHODS: We conducted fMRI with thermal heat pain application (left volar forearm) in 32 idiopathic SFN patients and 31 healthy controls. We performed functional connectivity analyses with right supplementary motor area (SMA), left insula, and left caudate nucleus (CN) as seed …
