AIM: To determine the aetiology of a recurring and severe form of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in sheep.
METHODS: Five sheep flocks that had experienced a severe form of IKC were examined. Clinical history, conjunctival swabs and blood samples were collected from affected animals. Culture for bacteria, and also specifically for Mycoplasma and Chlamydophila spp, and detection of Mycoplasma conjunctivae DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were attempted. Serum samples were tested for antibodies to M. agalactiae, M. capricolum, M. conjunctivae and Chlamydophila spp.

A highly technological Yel-2 hybrid cell clone was isolated. The clone produces monoclonal antibodies to protein E of the yellow fever virus (Dakar strain). The Yel-2 hybridoma was cloned by the method of limiting dilutions. By the data of indirect immunofluorescence the titre of the specific antibodies reached 1:128 in the culture fluid and 1:10240 in the ascitic fluid. The occurrence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in an unselected population of pregnant women was studied by an indirect immunofluorescence method. Six women out of 116 were ANA-positive (5.2%), 2 of them having a moderately high titre (1:160 and 1:320) and 1 complement-fixing ANA. The antigenic specificity of ANA was anti-single-stranded DNA in 2 cases and RNAase-sensitive anti-extractable nuclear antigen in 1 case. We studied viral involvement in Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome. In the CF test, viral infection was confirmed in 2 of 84 patients. Of the 12 patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, 5 showed a significantly high titre for varicella zoster and one for rubella. The ELISA test, performed in 60 patients with Bell's palsy, revealed significantly high titres for varicella zoster in 5 patients and for herpes simplex in 4 patients. Several tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains isolated in Slovakia from 1974-1978 were characterized by their cytophatic abilities, sensitivity to heating at 50 degrees C and to 2 M urea, and pathogenicity for white mice. Strains isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks differed in pathogenic properties from those isolated from Clethrinomys glareolus. The latter strains (Skalica) may be considered a spontaneous variant of TBA virus with decreased virulence for mice.

The immune response and persistence of antibodies were investigated in dairy cattle vaccinated with formalin-inactivated phase (ph) I Coxiella burnetii vaccine agglutinating antibody geometric mean titer (GMT) of 193.2 at 1 month after vaccination compared to a GMT of 2.0 for nonvaccinated calves. The agglutinating antibodies gradually decreased in vaccinated cattle, but the GMT remained approximately 4 times higher than that for the nonvaccinated group for at least 20 months. The isolation of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus from the spinal fluid of a patient with a clinical diagnosis of meningo-encephalitis and the demonstration of virus-neutralizing antibodies in sera from inhabitants of the Tribec region have shown this area to be an active natural focus of tick-borne encephalitis. Of healthy people from the villages of Jarok and Kostolany, 26% had antibodies to TBE virus. The specificity of the reaction of antipurin-6-oyl sera with thermally denatured DNA has been studied by means of hapten inhibition techniques. The relative order of effectiveness of various haptens as inhibitors of the complement fixation reaction between DNA and antipurin-6-oyl serum was found to be comparable to their relative order of effectiveness as inhibitors of the precipitin reaction between purin-6-oyl-protein conjugates and antipurin-6-oyl serum.
