Neurocognitive profiles in Salla disease.

Salla disease, a free sialic acid storage disorder, is one of the 36 currently known disorders in Finland that form the Finnish disease heritage. Salla disease leads to learning disability* with a wide clinical variation. Two main categories of the disease have been classified: a conventional subtype and a severe subtype with more severe defects. We present detailed neurocognitive profiles of 41 Finnish patients with Salla disease (19 females, 22 males; age range 11mo to 63y, median 19y). The neurocognitive development of patients with Salla disease was assessed by psychological and neuropsych

Efficacy of urea therapy in children with ichthyosis. A multicenter randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, semilateral study.

BACKGROUND: Ichthyoses are genetic disorders of keratinization which are uncomfortable due to their conspicuous scaling, itching and cosmetic problems. Especially in childhood, ichthyoses can lead to social discrimination and psychological problems. Efficient therapies are necessary which are safe and well tolerated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the keratolytic and moisturizing properties as well as the tolerance of a new urea lotion when applied to hyperkeratotic and ichthyotic skin in childhood. METHODS: The study was conducted as a multicenter, randomized, placebo-co

[Psychological sequelae of persecution. The survivor syndrome].

In the present decennium, the fifth after the end of the Nazi holocaust, the psychological sequelae in the survivors are far from being overcome, and this chapter of psychiatry is not yet closed. The clinical symptomatology of the survivor's syndrome had only gradually been described during a period of about 20 postwar years. Among the particularities of what survivors experienced were their being outlawed, discrimination, defamation, total absence of rights, loss of individuality, life threatening over a long period, being uprooted, the fact of little number of survivors in one's family and e

Development and validation of the eco-reproductive concern scale.

PURPOSE: Climate change has emerged as a growing psychosocial stressor that shapes individuals' perceptions of the future, including decisions related to childbearing. However, the lack of standardized measurement tools limits the systematic assessment of eco-reproductive concerns within public health and nursing research. This study aims to develop a measurement tool that assesses individuals' reproductive concerns and intentions in the context of climate change and environmental crises. METHOD: This cross-sectional methodological study was conducted with 617 adults aged 18-45 years between

Validation of the Chinese version of the Valued Living Questionnaire among Chinese patients with psychiatric illness.

BACKGROUND: Valued living is a core process in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and the Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ) is widely used to assess this construct. However, the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the VLQ (VLQ-C) have not been established. This study aimed to translate the VLQ into Chinese and evaluate its psychometric properties using complementary Item Response Theory (IRT) and Classical Test Theory (CTT) approaches. METHODS: The VLQ was translated and culturally adapted in accordance with international guidelines. Face and content validity were establis

Dutch Translation and Validation of the Treatment Expectation Questionnaire (TEX-Q).

PURPOSE: The Treatment Expectation Questionnaire (TEX-Q) is a generic, multidimensional scale that measures patients' expectations of medical and psychological treatments. Currently, it is available in English and German only. This study aims to translate the TEX-Q into Dutch and evaluate its psychometric properties. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The TEX-Q was translated into Dutch following international guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation of self-report measures. The Dutch version was tested in 163 gynaecological outpatients starting new treatments, a group suitable for validation due to their

A practice research study concerning homeless service user involvement with a programme of social support work delivered in a specialized psychological trauma service.

ACCESSIBLE SUMMARY: Homeless persons are known to be highly vulnerable to psychological trauma, in events triggering periods of homelessness and the considerable social isolation and adversity suffered when homeless. This study provides an account of how mental health support work is experienced by homeless service users when it is informed by a person-centred, non-directive approach and implemented by trainee health and social care professionals under the auspices of a specialized psychological trauma service. The study draws upon material gathered from interviews with service users domiciled

Impaired perceptual learning in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome is mediated by parvalbumin neuron dysfunction and is reversible.

To uncover the circuit-level alterations that underlie atypical sensory processing associated with autism, we adopted a symptom-to-circuit approach in the Fmr1-knockout (Fmr1-/-) mouse model of Fragile X syndrome. Using a go/no-go task and in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, we find that impaired visual discrimination in Fmr1-/- mice correlates with marked deficits in orientation tuning of principal neurons and with a decrease in the activity of parvalbumin interneurons in primary visual cortex. Restoring visually evoked activity in parvalbumin cells in Fmr1-/- mice with a chemogenetic strateg

Variability in post-error behavioral adjustment is associated with functional abnormalities in the temporal cortex in children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Error processing is reflected, behaviorally, by slower reaction times (RT) on trials immediately following an error (post-error). Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) fail to show RT slowing and demonstrate increased intra-subject variability (ISV) on post-error trials. The neural correlates of these behavioral deficits remain unclear. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) are key regions implicated in error processing and subsequent behavioral adjustment. We hypothesized that children with ADHD, compared to typicall

Aberrant responses in social interaction of dopamine transporter knockout mice.

The dopamine (DA) transporter (DAT) controls the temporal and spatial resolution of dopaminergic neurotransmission. Disruption of the Dat1 gene in mice leads to increased extracellular DA concentrations and reduced expression of D1- and D2-like receptors in striatum. The mutants are hyperactive in the open field and they display deficits in learning and memory. In humans, dopaminergic dysfunction has been associated with a number of different psychiatric disorders and some of these conditions are accompanied by abnormal social responses. To determine whether social responses were also impaired

Introducing the Neuroplastic Narrative: a non-pathologizing biological foundation for trauma-informed and adverse childhood experience aware approaches.

Most people accessing mental health services have adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and/or histories of complex trauma. In recognition of this, there are calls to move away from medical model approaches and move toward trauma-informed approaches which privilege the impact of life experience over underlying pathology in the etiology of emotional and psychological suffering. Trauma-informed approaches lack a biological narrative linking trauma and adversity to later suffering. In its absence, this suffering is diagnosed and treated as a mental illness. This study articulates the Neuroplastic

A prediction rule for shoulder pain related sick leave: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pain is common in primary care, and has an unfavourable outcome in many patients. Information about predictors of shoulder pain related sick leave in workers is scarce and inconsistent. The objective was to develop a clinical prediction rule for calculating the risk of shoulder pain related sick leave for individual workers, during the 6 months following first consultation in general practice. METHODS: A prospective cohort study with 6 months follow-up was conducted among 350 workers with a new episode of shoulder pain. Potential predictors included the results of a physi

Redefining Obesity Risk for Heart Failure: Incorporating Morbidity Into the 2024 EASO Framework Definition of Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Conventional BMI-based obesity classification fails to capture the metabolic heterogeneity underlying obesity-related heart failure (HF) risk. We evaluated the 2024 European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) framework-which integrates central adiposity with medical, functional, and psychological morbidity-to refine HF risk stratification. METHODS: Among 449,550 UK Biobank participants (median follow-up 15.5 years), we applied three obesity definitions: (1) BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2; (2) the EASO framework, which retains the normal-weight category (BMI 18.5-< 25 kg/m2) and reclassif

Integrating social cognitive theory with machine learning to predict MSM-women sexual behavior: a multicenter random forest model development study in China.

Understanding and predicting sexual behavior patterns through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is essential for identifying behavioral bridges that facilitate HIV transmission. MSM who engage in sexual activity with women (MSM-W) represent a critical yet underexplored subgroup in China. However, existing studies lack theory-driven predictive frameworks that explicitly integrate psychological mechanisms with robust analytics. This study aimed to develop and validate an SCT-guided machine-learning model to predict MSM-W behavior and to evaluate its discriminatory and calibration perform

Multidomain perioperative physiological vulnerability, longitudinal recovery patterns, and clinical outcomes after gastrointestinal cancer surgery in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Chronological age and conventional clinical risk factors incompletely capture physiological heterogeneity among older adults undergoing major surgery. Multisystem vulnerability involving inflammation, nutritional reserve, physical function, sleep-circadian regulation, psychological status, and cognitive performance may influence postoperative recovery and long-term outcomes. Whether an integrated multidomain physiological vulnerability phenotype can characterize perioperative risk and recovery patterns remains uncertain. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 450 adults aged ≥

Psycho-Socio-Economic Issues Challenging Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis Patients: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Limited treatment options, long duration of treatment and associated toxicity adversely impact the physical and mental well-being of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients. Despite research advances in the microbiological and clinical aspects of MDR-TB, research on the psychosocial context of MDR-TB is limited and less understood. METHODOLOGY: We searched the databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and Google Scholar to retrieve all published articles. The final manuscripts included in the review were those with a primary focus on psychosocial issues of MDR-TB patients. T

Conditional pathways to loneliness in older adults with vision impairment: a decision-tree analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of vision impairment continues to increase globally due to population growth and aging. Among older adults with vision impairment, loneliness is common. Prior studies assessing loneliness risk have relied on regression-based approaches, which may not capture complex, heterogeneous conditional pathways. We apply a theoretically guided machine learning approach to examine loneliness risk among older adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using baseline data from 210 adults with AMD (Agemean = 80.1 years) enrolle

Barriers to Accessing Sexual and Reproductive Health Services and Associated Mental Health Impacts Among Migrant Women in the UK: A Scoping Review.

Migrant, internally displaced, asylum-seeking, and refugee women in the United Kingdom experience ongoing risks of having their sexual and reproductive healthcare rights violated. This growing population also has limited access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, which may be associated with psychological distress. This scoping review was conducted to identify barriers to accessing SRH services and reported mental health experiences in this population. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the Arksey & O’Malley methodology, searches were conducted in six bibliographic databases

Exploring the Immigrant Health Paradox Among the Vietnamese Population in the United States.

Background: The term immigrant health paradox describes how immigrants often have better health outcomes than their American-born counterparts. While existing literature treats this phenomenon as broadly generalizable, emerging research indicates that its expression varies across cultural and migration contexts. Understanding how the immigrant health paradox may appear across specific ethnic groups requires research that maps variation rather than assumes uniformity. Objectives: This study seeks to describe patterns, explore variation by nativity, and identify factors associated with well-bein
