Incidence of active pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with coincident filarial and/or intestinal helminth infections followed longitudinally in South India.

BACKGROUND: Filarial (and other helminth) infections are known to modulate mycobacteria-specific pro-inflammatory cytokine responses necessary for maintaining latency in tuberculosis (TB). We sought to address whether helminth co-infection alters progression to active pulmonary TB in a co-endemic area of South India. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Incidence of active pulmonary TB was assessed in 5096 subjects from five villages among helminth-infected (hel⁺) and -uninfected (hel⁻) groups. Baseline stool examinations, circulating filarial antigen, and tuberculin skin testing (PPD) were performed

Parasitological and nutritional status of school-age and preschool-age children in four villages in Southern Leyte, Philippines: Lessons for monitoring the outcome of Community-Led Total Sanitation.

While preventive chemotherapy remains to be a major strategy for the prevention and control of soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH), improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) comprise the long-term strategy to achieve sustained control of STH. This study examined the parasitological and nutritional status of school-age and preschool-age children in four villages in Southern Leyte, Philippines where two of the villages attained Open-Defecation-Free (ODF) status after introduction of Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS). A total of 341 children (89.0% of the total eligible populatio

Impact of anthelminthic treatment in pregnancy and childhood on immunisations, infections and eczema in childhood: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections may modulate immune responses to unrelated pathogens and allergens; these effects may commence prenatally. We addressed the hypothesis that anthelminthic treatment in pregnancy and early childhood would improve responses to immunisation and modulate disease incidence in early childhood with both beneficial and detrimental effects. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in Entebbe, Uganda [ISRCTN32849447]. In three independent randomisations, 2507 pregnant women were allocated to receive single-dose albendazole o

Deworming drugs for soil-transmitted intestinal worms in children: effects on nutritional indicators, haemoglobin and school performance.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends treating all school children at regular intervals with deworming drugs in areas where helminth infection is common. The WHO state this will improve nutritional status, haemoglobin, and cognition and thus will improve health, intellect, and school attendance. Consequently, it is claimed that school performance will improve, child mortality will decline, and economic productivity will increase. Given the important health and societal benefits attributed to this intervention, we sought to determine whether they are based on reliable evide

The parasitic nematodes Hysterothylacium sp. type MB larvae as bioindicators of lead and cadmium: a comparative study of parasite and host tissues.

Cadmium and lead concentrations were compared in tissues of cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus L., its intestinal nematode Hysterothylacium sp. type MB larvae, and in water from the same location in the Sea of Oman. Metal accumulation in hosts, parasites and sea water was measured by ICP-OES. Hysterothylacium larvae from the intestinal lumen and visceral cavity showed much higher metal concentrations than in host tissues or sea water. Statistical analyses revealed no significant differences in metal accumulation between infected and uninfected hosts. Cadmium concentration in the host muscle was

[Nonbacterial colitides].

Aside from bacterial infections, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections are important differential diagnoses in inflammatory disorders of the colorectum. In contrast to bacterial infections, in which the causative organism can hardly ever be detected histologically, in non bacterial infections the germs can often be verified by either histology, immunohistochemistry, or at least by molecular pathology. This manuscript will give an overview of the spectrum of pathogenic germs, the clinical symptoms, and pathological findings of the most important infections.

Enteroparasitosis prevalence and parasitism influence in clinical outcomes of tuberculosis patients with or without HIV co-infection in a reference hospital in Rio de Janeiro (2000-2006).

Tuberculosis and intestinal parasites affect primarily low social and economic level populations, living clustered in precarious habitational settings. One of the interesting aspects of this interaction is the parasitism influence in cellular response to tuberculosis. In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of enteroparasitosis in tuberculosis patients, HIV-infected and non HIV infected, and we observed the influence of helminth presence in the response to tuberculin skin test (TST) and tuberculosis clinical outcomes. From 607 clinical records reviewed, 327 individuals met the study

Intestinal helminthiases among rural and urban schoolchildren in south-western Nigeria.

The prevalences and intensities of intestinal helminthic infection among primary schoolchildren were determined in rural and urban communities of the Ife Central local government area, in south-western Nigeria. After the schools in the study area had been stratified into urban and rural, a random sample from each stratum was selected for further study. In each study school, a single fresh stool specimen was obtained from each pupil in randomly selected classes and checked, using a quantitative method (Stoll's dilution egg-count technique), for helminth eggs and larvae. Overall, 366 rural and 3

Helminthes could influence the outcome of vaccines against TB in the tropics.

Helminthes, infections widespread in the tropics, are known to elicit a wide range of immunomodulation characterized by dominant Th2 type immune responses, chronic immune activation as well as up-regulated regulatory T cell activity. Such a wide range of immunomodulation caused by helminthes may have an impact on the host's ability to cope with subsequent infections and/or may affect the efficacy of vaccination. Indeed studies conducted in humans living in helminth-endemic areas and in animal models showed that helminth infection makes the host more permissive to mycobacterial infections and l

Prevalence and severity of anemia and iron deficiency: cross-sectional studies in adolescent schoolgirls in western Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: Anemia is a major public health concern in preschool children and pregnant women in the developing world. While many studies have examined these two at-risk groups, there is a paucity of data on anemia in adolescents living in developing countries in the complex ecologic context of poverty, parasitism, and malnutrition. We evaluated the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of anemia in adolescent schoolgirls in an area with intense malaria transmission in western Kenya. DESIGN: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted, using a multistage random sample design. SETTING: Public p

Immunopathology of intestinal helminth infection.

The relationship between intestinal pathology and immune expulsion of gastrointestinal nematodes remains controversial. Parasite expulsion is associated with intestinal pathology in several model systems and both of these phenomena are T cell dependent. However, while immune expulsion of gastrointestinal helminth parasites is usually associated with Th2 responses, the effector mechanisms directly responsible for parasite loss have not been elucidated. In contrast, the intestinal pathology observed in many other disease models closely resembles that seen in helminth infections, but has been att

Intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis and geohelminthiases: their association with other intestinal parasites and reported intestinal symptoms.

In order to determine reported signs and symptoms that may predict an intestinal parasitic infection, 241 schoolchildren in western Côte d'Ivoire were interviewed with a simple questionnaire and their stool specimens were examined over several consecutive days. Special emphasis was placed on (i) assessing infections by Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar, Giardia duodenalis and by intestinal worms, (ii) looking for associations between these parasites, and (iii) looking for associations between these parasites and commonly perceived intestinal signs and symptoms. Complete questionnaire results, in

Relationships between soil-transmitted helminthiases and growth in urban slum schoolchildren in Ujung Pandang, Indonesia.

This study examined the relationship between intestinal helminthiases and growth in urban slum schoolchildren. Children (n = 330) who received single doses of either pyrantel, albendazole, or placebo at baseline and again at 6 months were followed and examined fully at 0, 3, 6, and 12 months for helminth infections and anthropometry. Results of treatments indicated that all groups reduced their prevalence and intensity toward the period of the study. Reductions in intensity of both infections in the treatment groups were observed large in 3 and 12 months, whereas at 6 months reached mostly the
