Local subcutaneous atrophy or hypopigmentation were observed in 53% of the children after steroid injection (20/38). These minor complications were associated with a greater volume of steroid injected into the site per child (P = 0.02).

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses are the most common actinic lesions on Caucasian skin. Cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen is commonly used to tr … te response lesions. The main adverse events were pain, stinging, and burning during treatment, and hypopigmentation after healing.
CONCLUSIONS: Cryosurgery is an effective treatment for actinic keratoses. The true complete response rate is significantly lower than that previously reported. The freeze duration influences successful treatment. Adverse events are m …

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a group of rare, recessive disorders in which oculocutaneous albinism, progressive pulmonary fibrosis, bleeding diathesis, and other abnormalities result from defective biogenesis of multiple cytoplasmic organelles. Seven different HPS genes are known in humans; in mouse, at least 16 loci are associated with HPS-like mutant phenotypes. In the rat, only two HPS models are known, Fawn-hooded (FH) and Tester Moriyama (TM), non-complementing strains in which HPS-like hypopigmentation and platelet storage pool deficiency result from a mutation of the Ruby (red eye…

HPS3 codes for a 113.7 kDa protein of unknown function. HPS-3 manifests with mild hypopigmentation and bleeding. All types of HPS are diagnosed by whole mount electron microscopic demonstration of absent platelet dense bodies, and molecular diagnoses are available for the Puerto Rican HPS1 and HPS3 founder mutations. OBJECTIVES: Exposure to arsenic causes keratosis, hyperpigmentation, and hypopigmentation and seemingly also diabetes mellitus, at least in subjects with skin lesions. Here we evaluate the relations of arsenical skin lesions and glucosuria as a proxy for diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: Through existing measurements of arsenic in drinking water in Bangladesh, wells with and without arsenic contamination were identified. Based on a questionnaire, 1595 subjects > or = 30 years of age were interviewed; 1481 had a history of drinking water contaminated with arsenic whereas 114 had not. Time weighted m…

Antityrosinase antibody is a newly detected antibody in the sera of patients with melanoma or vitiligo. The serum level of the antibody is m … level in patients with no evidence of disease. Patients with melanoma and MAH (melanoma-associated hypopigmentation; vitiligo-like) had the same level of antityrosinase antibodies as the controls or the patients with metastatic melanoma. This observation reflected the possible absorption of antityrosinase antibodies by melanoma antigens, and pointed to the partic …

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinase is an enzyme that participates in the process of melanin production in normal melanocytes and melanoma cells. Enzymes are known to be autoantigens in various autoimmune disorders; thus, after the detection of antityrosinase antibodies in patients with vitiligo and melanoma, tyrosinase was defined as an autoantigen in these conditions. In some patients with melanoma the disease is associated with the appearance of "vitiligo-like" white patches on the skin, called melanoma-associated hypopigmentation (MAH). In this article, the authors summarize the recent data related to …

Immunohistochemistry with T-cell receptor β-chain constant domain 1 (TRBC1) has been reported to be helpful in distinguishing between a clonal or reactive process. TRBC1 interpretation can be challenging in cases with a low proportion of neoplastic T-cells and high numbers of reactive T-cells. In this study we evaluated TRBC1 immunohistochemistry retrospectively on four cases with known T-cell receptor clonality results by polymerase chain reaction that were clinically categorized as hypopigmented mycosis fungoides. TRBC1 immunohistochemistry was defined as monotypic-negative (TRBC1 < 25%, i.e

Patients with melanoma may develop skin depigmentation spontaneously or following therapy, referred to as melanoma-associated leucoderma (MAL). As clinical presentation of MAL may precede primary/metastatic melanoma detection, recognition of MAL is important to prevent its misdiagnosis as vitiligo and the subsequent application of immunosuppressive treatment. To reveal the immunity involved in MAL development, we investigated the presence of antibody and T-cell immune responses directed against the melanocyte-differentiation-antigens MART-1 (Melan-A), tyrosinase and gp100 in patients with MAL,

We describe a case of multiple, discrete, hypopigmented macules in the suprapubic and axillary region in a healthy 3-year-old girl. The lesions first appeared at approximately 9 months of age and increased in number over time. Initial histopathologic examination by an outside dermatopathologist at 1 year of age was reported as showing nonspecific histologic changes. A repeat biopsy at 3 years of age showed large intraepidermal clear cells that expressed CKAE1/CAM5.2, CK7, and BRST2. These findings are diagnostic for clear-cell papulosis, a rare condition that primarily affects children. Withou

INTRODUCTION: Waardenburg's syndrome (WS) is a rare inherited disorder of congenital hearing loss and Pigmentary disturbances of the eyes, hair, skin and neural crest derivatives.
MATERIALS & METHODS: 620 students in a deaf/blind school were examined and four had WS with a frequency of 0.65%. 2 males and 2 females with WS and age ranges between 10-19yrs {mean 15.75yrs.} All 4 subjects had complete blue irides, white forelock and sensorineural hearing loss, and thus met the diagnostic criteria. They were then subjected to Audiometric assessment.
RESULTS: Otoscopy was essentially normal but Au

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the true efficacy of the 308-nm excimer laser for darkening striae alba using a modified approach.
METHODS: Ten subjects were treated using the excimer laser on the white lines of striae, while the normal skin near to and between the lines was covered with zinc oxide cream. Assessment of efficacy was performed by colorimetric scores based on mexameter measurement and also digital photographs showing before-after laser therapy, which were compared by two independent dermatologists.
RESULTS: The mexameter-based data analysis showed that the excimer laser was weakly effec
