Improved diagnostic accuracy when combining computed tomography angiography and corrected coronary opacification in patients with coronary stents.

Background The accuracy of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is sub-optimal in patients with coronary stents. Methods that can increase its diagnostic accuracy are desirable. Objective A proof-of-concept study was undertaken to determine if corrected coronary opacification (CCO) differences can improve the accuracy of CCTA in stented coronary arteries. Methods PCI patients who underwent both CCTA and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) within 3 months were analyzed. Coronary luminal attenuation values (normalized to the aorta) were measured proximally and distally to coronary ste

Repair of double aortic arch in patients with concomitant cardiac anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Double aortic arch (DAA) associated with other cardiac anomalies is uncommon. We review the outcomes of primary complete repair of DAA with concomitant cardiac anomalies in a single center. METHODS: From September 2005 through March 2014, 15 patients underwent primary complete repair of DAA with concomitant cardiac anomalies. The mean age was 53 months (range, two months to 19 years). RESULTS: All patients underwent primary complete correction through a median sternotomy. One patient died in hospital from severe pneumonia. The intubation time ranged from 20 to 68 h and the intens

Dual- versus Single-Energy CT-Angiography Imaging for Patients Undergoing Intracranial Aneurysm Repair.

BACKGROUND: The invasiveness and risk of thromboembolic complications of catheter angiography underline the need for alternative imaging modalities in patients following intracranial aneurysm (IA) repair. However, the overall image quality of existing noninvasive imaging modalities, such as single-energy CT angiography (SE-CTA), compromises its value in this respect. OBJECTIVE: We prospectively investigated the value of a novel dual-energy CTA (DE-CTA) scanner and algorithm for assessing the degree of occlusion and parent vessel patency in patients following IA repair. METHODS: A prospective

Diagnosis of esophageal varices on liver CT: is thin-section reconstruction necessary?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 1 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm section thicknesses of liver CT on the detection and grading of esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients. METHODOLOGY: A total of 219 consecutive cirrhotic patients who had undergone both upper endoscopy and 64-channel liver CT were included. Portal phase images of each CT were reconstructed with a section thickness of 1 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm. Four radiologists independently reviewed the 3 image sets. The observers evaluated the presence of esophageal varices on a 5-point confidence scale and measured the m

Lowering radiation dose during dedicated colorectal cancer MDCT: comparison of low tube voltage and sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction at 80 kVp versus blended dual-energy images in a population of patients with low body mass index.

PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy, cancer staging, image quality, and radiation dose of 80-kVp computed tomography (CT) images for patients with colorectal cancers (CRCs) using sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction (SAFIRE). METHODS: Sixty-four consecutive patients (mean weight 62.5  ±  11.3 kg, mean BMI 24.1  ±  3.3 kg/m(2)) with known CRC underwent dual-energy CT. Data were reconstructed as a weighted average (WA) 120-kVp dataset. Both filtered back projection (FBP) and SAFIRE were applied to reconstruct the WA 120-Kvp (Protocol A, B) and 80-kVp (Protocol C, D) image sets. The

An accurate method of radiological assessment of acetabular volume and orientation in computed tomography spatial reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional (2D) measurements of acetabular morphology and orientation are well known; there is less information on these acetabular characteristics in three dimensions. One important reason is the lack of standardized reference planes for the pelvis, especially in relation to the spinopelvic unit; another is that no method precisely assesses the acetabulum in three-dimensional (3D) orientation based on its axis rather than on the directions of the edges of the acetabular rim. We present an objective, highly reliable and accurate, axis-based approach to acetabular anthropometry

Effect of large incisor retraction on upper airway morphology in adult bimaxillary protrusion patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, using multislice computed tomography (MSCT), the morphologic changes in the upper airway after large incisor retraction in adult bimaxillary protrusion patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty adult patients with bimaxillary protrusion had four first premolars extracted, and then miniscrews were placed to provide anchorage. A CT scan was performed before incisor retraction and again posttreatment. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the pre- (T1) and post- (T2) CT data was used to assess for morphological changes of the upper airway. A paired t-test was used to com

CT radiomic features reproducibility of virtual non-contrast series derived from photon-counting CCTA datasets using a novel calcium-preserving reconstruction algorithm compared with standard non-contrast series: focusing on epicardial adipose tissue.

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of computed tomography (CT) radiomic features (RFs) about Epicardial Adipose Tissue (EAT). The features derived from coronary photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) angiography datasets using the PureCalcium (VNCPC) and conventional virtual non-contrast (VNCConv) algorithm were compared with true non-contrast (TNC) series. METHODS: RFs of EAT from 52 patients who underwent PCCT were quantified using VNCPC, VNCConv, and TNC series. The agreement of EAT volume (EATV) and EAT density (EATD) was evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficien

MDCT Morphometry of the Thoracolumbar Junction in a Turkish Cohort: Surgical, Radiological, and Forensic Implications.

Background: The thoracolumbar junction (TLJ) includes the T11-L2 vertebral segments. It is a pivotal biomechanical transition zone between the rigid thoracic spine and the more mobile lumbar spine. Accurate morphometric data from this region are crucial for understanding human axial biomechanics and supporting forensic investigations. Objective: This study was designed to establish a normative multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) database of the human thoracolumbar junction (T11-L2) in an adult population. Specifically, the primary objectives were to quantify normal vertebral and pedicle

Subclinical valve leaflet thrombosis following bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Subclinical leaflet thrombosis (SLT) is often an incidental finding characterized by a thin layer of thrombus involving one, two or three leaflets, with typical appearance on multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) of hypo-attenuating defect at the aortic side of the leaflet, also called hypo-attenuating leaflet thickening (HALT). SLT may occur following both transcatheter aortic replacement (TAVR) or biological surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). The aim of this review is to present an overview of the current state of knowledge on the incidence, diagnosis, clinical
