Oral Streptococcus mutans load among Indian children with cerebral palsy.

The motor impairments of cerebral palsy (CP) are typically accompanied by subsequent musculoskeletal issues, seizures, and abnormalities of sensation, intelligence, communication, and behaviour. These kids have a lower capacity for regulating oral health because of their poor voluntary movements. Poor oral hygiene brought on by insufficient brushing and flossing, increased use of sugary foods, and orally administered drugs puts people at risk for periodontal disorders and dental caries. Poor dental health and rising therapy demands establish a sadistic cycle that affects patient overall health

Zero Echo Time vs. T1-Weighted MRI for Assessment of Cortical and Medullary Bone Morphology Abnormalities Using CT as the Reference Standard.

BACKGROUND: Conventional MR pulse sequences result in poor signal from low T2 cortical bone because the minimum achievable echo time is limited. A sequence resulting in improved bone contrast is desirable. PURPOSE: To evaluate the image quality and diagnostic performance of grayscale inversion zero echo time imaging (GI-ZTE) and grayscale inversion T1-weighted imaging (GI-T1WI) compared with computed tomography (CT). STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: A total of 50 patients with musculoskeletal tumors or tumor-like diseases of the lower extremities having MRI and CT studies. FIELD STRENGTH

Importance of Electrodiagnostic Testing Prior to a Tethered Cord Release in a Patient with Overlapping Symptoms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common inherited neuromuscular disorder causing a symmetric, slowly progressive distal neuropathy of the legs and arms. Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) encompasses a constellation of neurological, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and urinary abnormalities resulting from spinal cord traction. The signs and symptoms of CMT and TCS may be very similar. Electrodiagnostic (EDX) studies are crucial in differentiating between these two conditions. We describe a 20-year-old woman with a history of low back pain, right leg tingling, and difficulty in walking

TTN as a candidate gene for distal arthrogryposis type 10 pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis is a medical term used to describe congenital contractures which often affect multiple limbs. Distal arthrogryposis (DA) is one of the major categories of arthrogryposis that primarily affects the distal parts of the body, i.e., the hands and the legs. Although ten different types and several subtypes of DAs have been described, the genes associated with each of these DAs are yet to be characterized. Distal arthrogryposis type 10 (DA10) is a rare genetic disease, which is distinguished from the other arthrogryposis types by plantar flexion contractures resulting in t

Efficacy of guselkumab, a selective IL-23 inhibitor, in Preventing Arthritis in a Multicentre Psoriasis At-Risk cohort (PAMPA): protocol of a randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled multicentre trial.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a complex, immune-mediated disease associated with skin psoriasis that, if left untreated, can lead to joint destruction. Up to 30% of patients with psoriasis progress to PsA. In most cases, psoriasis precedes synovio-entheseal inflammation by an average of 5-7 years, providing a unique opportunity for early and potentially preventive intervention in a susceptible and identifiable population. Guselkumab is an effective IL-23p19 inhibitor Food and Drug Administration (FDA-approved for treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis and PsA. The Preventing Ar

Footprint measurement methods for the assessment and classification of foot types in subjects with Down syndrome: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders, especially in the feet, are common in people with Down syndrome (DS). Evaluation of podiatric footprints is important to prevent and manage orthopedic symptoms. The reliability of a wide variety of footprint measurement methods has been evaluated in healthy people, but few studies have considered the specific morphotype features of the feet in subjects with DS. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the podometric measurement tools used to typologically classify the footprints in the population with DS. METHODS: The following electronic databa

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Femoral Cartilage, Achilles Tendon, and Plantar Fascia in Young Women Wearing High-Heeled Shoes.

BACKGROUND: Specific attention on the musculoskeletal impact of wearing high-heeled shoes (HHS) has mainly focused on knee osteoarthritis and the literature is limited to biomechanical changes. The distal femoral cartilage has not been morphologically studied. Additionally, although heel elevation is coupled with a shear stress at the heel and overloaded calf muscles, Achilles tendon (AT) and plantar fascia (PF) thicknesses have not been assessed either. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the distal femoral cartilage, AT, and PF were different in women wearing HHS and flat-heeled shoes (FHS) a

Perception of Effort During Activity in Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND: Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) are used to monitor and prescribe exercise intensity for a variety of patient populations. It is important to understand RPE in different patient populations to ensure appropriate prescriptions and maximize the likelihood of adherence. Chronic liver diseases (CLDs) are a constellation of diseases that are associated frequently with fatigue, metabolic abnormalities, and cardiovascular disease, all targets for prescription of exercise. However, there have been no investigations of the correlates of RPE in those with CLD. OBJECTIVE: To correlate RP

Shoulder disorders in female working-age population: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the most common pathologies in the general population. However, research into the prevalence of upper arm MSDs is hampered by a lack of uniformity in case definition, and by the absence of a gold standard for measurement. Furthermore, some sectors of the population have benefited from extensive research whilst others have largely been ignored. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVES: to investigate the prevalence of shoulder MSDs in a working age female population not exposed to specific occupational risk factors such as heavy an

[Autoantibodies in systemic sclerosis and their clinical correlation in patients from a Midwestern region of Brazil].

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease of autoimmune nature characterized by the triad of vascular injury, autoimmunity (cellular and humoral) and tissue fibrosis. Autoantibodies do not seem to be simply epiphenomena, but are involved in disease pathogenesis. It is believed that the SSc-specific autoantibodies are responsible both for amplifying immune response and targeting cell types that are relevant in the pathophysiology of SSc. OBJECTIVES: To correlate the profile of the following specific autoantibodies: anti-centromere (ACA), anti-topoisomerase I (topo I

Diagnostic Guidance for Chronic Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type I and Type II from The American Society of Interventional Physicians (ASIPP).

BACKGROUND: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a challenging and often disabling condition marked by persistent pain, most commonly in a limb following injury or surgery. It presents with a wide array of symptoms, including intense pain, swelling, alterations in skin color and temperature, motor dysfunction, and trophic changes such as skin and tissue atrophy. While the precise cause of CRPS is not fully understood, it is thought to stem from abnormal nervous system activity, leading to heightened pain sensitivity and inflammatory responses. A thorough understanding of CRPS is essential

Overgrowth Syndromes Caused by Somatic Variants in the Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase/AKT/Mammalian Target of Rapamycin Pathway.

Somatic variants have been well described in tumorigenesis; however, they are only recently appreciated in other human disorders, such as mosaic overgrowth syndromes. Although overgrowth is a manifestation in many genetic syndromes, not all overgrowth syndromes are inherited. Mosaic somatic variants have been lately described in several overgrowth disorders, such as Proteus syndrome, CLOVES (congenital, lipomatous, overgrowth, vascular malformations, epidermal nevi, and spinal/skeletal anomalies and/or scoliosis) syndrome, and megalencephalyepolymicrogyria-polydactyly-hydrocephalus syndrome. Intestinal cell kinase, a protein associated with endocrine-cerebro-osteodysplasia syndrome, is a key regulator of cilia length and Hedgehog signaling.

Endocrine-cerebro-osteodysplasia (ECO) syndrome is a recessive genetic disorder associated with multiple congenital defects in endocrine, cerebral, and skeletal systems that is caused by a missense mutation in the mitogen-activated protein kinase-like intestinal cell kinase (ICK) gene. In algae and invertebrates, ICK homologs are involved in flagellar formation and ciliogenesis, respectively. However, it is not clear whether this role of ICK is conserved in mammals and how a lack of functional ICK results in the characteristic phenotypes of human ECO syndrome. Here, we generated Ick knockout m

Relevance of bone anomalies in patients with thoracic outlet syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal anomalies are recognized as potential causes of thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS); however, there is a paucity of information regarding the specific bone anomalies associated with TOS and their relative incidence among the different clinical types of TOS. This study describes the prevalence of bone anomalies in a population with TOS. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of the clinical records and imaging studies of all patients who were surgically treated at our institution for TOS between 1991-2011 was conducted. Activating mutations in the extracellular domain of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 function by disruption of the disulfide bond in the third immunoglobulin-like domain.

Multiple human skeletal and craniosynostosis disorders, including Crouzon, Pfeiffer, Jackson-Weiss, and Apert syndromes, result from numerous point mutations in the extracellular region of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2). Many of these mutations create a free cysteine residue that potentially leads to abnormal disulfide bond formation and receptor activation; however, for noncysteine mutations, the mechanism of receptor activation remains unclear. We examined the effect of two of these mutations, W290G and T341P, on receptor dimerization and activation. These mutations resulted in
