Epidemiology of Oestrus ovis (Linneo, 1761) infestation in goats in Spain.

This survey was conducted to determine the chronobiology and seroprevalence of nasal bot infestation (Oestrus ovis) in Spain and to identify the risk factors associated with this disease in caprine herds. A total of 1590 sera from adult goats were collected at random on 175 farms in southwestern Spain. Sera were tested by ELISA, using crude protein from second stage larvae as antigen. The mean seroprevalence was 46.04% and mean percentage of optical densities was 41.83. These data indicate a high prevalence of this parasite in the investigated areas. The serological survey revealed that goats

Some physiological responses associated with reduced wool growth during blowfly strike in Merino sheep.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect on wool growth of physiological changes associated with experimental flystrike in superfine Merino wethers. DESIGN: An animal house study comparing experimentally fly struck sheep with non-infected control groups that were pair fed or fed ad libitum. PROCEDURE: Sheep in the blow fly larval challenge group were each artificially infected with 500 first instar larvae per day for 8 days. Infections were terminated with insecticide on day 10. For all sheep, live weight change, feed intake and body temperature were monitored and blood collected for analysis of hae

Estimation of the growth patterns of Oestrus ovis L. larvae hosted by goats in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

To estimate parameters for the variation in larval weight and dimension in Oestrus ovis L. and to describe the approximate pattern of growth, 2041 larvae were collected from 431 slaughtered goats and classified on a scale of 12 identified physiological ages, according to spiracular and integumental pigmentation. Larval live weight and measures of length, width, and thickness at the seventh segment were obtained. Weight increased from 0.23 mg in L1 larvae to 49 mg in late L2 larvae; however, the highest increases in weight were found to occur after the L2-L3 molt, especially during the early L3

Comparative curative and preventive efficacies of ivermectin and closantel on Oestrus ovis (Linné 1758) in naturally infected sheep.

A field trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of each of two formulations of ivermectin and of closantel in prevention and treatment of Oestrus ovis in a naturally infected flock grazing on the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, in south-western France. Within the flock, 875 sheep were randomly divided into four groups, and treated twice during the fly season, with an interval of 60 days between treatments. Group 1 sheep were treated with albendazole (ABZ) at a dose rate of 3.8 mg/kg to maintain control of trichostrongylid parasites without affecting O. ovis; Group 2 received closantel

Prevalence and monthly variations of the second and third instars of Cephalopina titillator (Diptera: Oestridae) infesting camels (Camelus dromedarius) in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Nine hundred and twenty-three camels slaughtered at Al-Ahsa abattoir, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, were examined for infestation with second and third instars of Cephalopina titillator during the period from December 1991 to November 1992. Four hundred and eighty camels (52%) were infested with second and third instars, with an annual mean of 19.29 +/- 1.09 larvae per camel (L/C). The percentage of infested camels and the mean monthly total number of larvae per camel showed two peaks of abundance, during February (96.06% and 25.06 +/- 2.1 L/C) and September (88.90% and 27.50 +/- 3.97 L/C).

Variation in skin inflammatory responses between sheep bred for resistance or susceptibility to fleece rot and blowfly strike.

Sheep which have been bred for resistance (R) or susceptibility (S) to fleece rot and blowfly strike, were tested for intradermal inflammatory responses to excretory and secretory products of Lucilia cuprina larvae. R rams and lambs gave significantly larger skin weals than S animals. In addition, R and S rams were infected with L cuprina first instar larvae and wound exudates were collected. In the first 12 hours of infection R rams released significantly more exudate protein at the wound site than S rams. Correlations suggested that exudate production was stimulated by both larval burden and

Vitrectomy for excision of intraocular larva (hypoderma species).

A 2-year-old girl presented with a 2-month history of anterior and posterior uveitis associated with the presence of an intravitreal larva. A Hypoderma species larva was successfully removed using a pars plana vitrectomy technique. A combined traction/rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and epiretinal membrane formation occurred later, requiring a second operation, but a good visual result was obtained.

The prevalence of Gasterophilus intestinalis in horses in northern England and Wales.

The stomachs of 448 horses from northern England and Wales were examined for Gasterophilus larvae, and 237 (52.7%) were found to be infected with G. intestinalis. Larvae were present in stomachs examined during each month of the year except August. Second instar larvae occurred from September through February and third instars were present from November through July. Adult fly activity began in August as indicated by the presence of eggs on horses. The life-cycle of G. intestinalis in northern England and Wales is outlined from the data presented. The mean instar burdens were 15.7 second and 3

Abnormal reactions and their frequency in cattle following the use of organophosphorus warble fly dressings.

The signs and treatment of abnormal reactions following the use of organophosphorus systemic warble fly dressings are recorded. A review is provided of all complaints received by the manufacturers and distributors of such compounds during the dressing periods for the years 1975 to 1978. The volume of warble fly dressing sold each year was known and the number of cattle dressed was based on the calculation of the number of adults which could have been treated with the volume. Complaints were divided according to the main signs reported and the most common complaint was that of paralysis-incoord

Standardization of an in vitro test for doramectin, fipronil, chlorpyrifos, and fluralaner against Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel, 1858) is the main etiological agent of myiasis in Latin America. In vitro bioassays are essential for detecting insecticide resistance development in the laboratory. This study evaluated different in vitro bioassay methodologies targeting C. hominivorax third-instar larvae. Chlorpyrifos, fipronil, fluralaner, and doramectin, were tested using either a filter paper assay or larval immersion for three different durations. In the filter paper assays, 9 concentrations of each active ingredient were applied to filter paper discs. After drying, the discs were place…

Health impacts and clinical management of New World Screwworm infestation on dogs and cats in a reintroduction scenario in the United States.

The New World Screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an obligate myiasis-causing dipteran native to the Americas. Its larval stages voraciously feed on living tissues of a broad range of warm-blooded hosts, including domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. NWS is a parasite of substantial economic importance due to its deleterious effects on livestock health, productivity, and welfare. This led to highly successful eradication efforts from the United States (U.S.), Mexico, and throughout Central America via mass release of sterile males. Nevertheless, the resurgence of cases in Central A…

Molecular identification of immature stages of medically important fly species, Puducherry, South India: a preliminary study.

Flies and maggots are of medical importance, and it is often necessary to identify them at species level. Conventionally, this is carried out based on morphological features using taxonomic keys. However, identification of maggots based on morphology is difficult and required entomological expertise is often lacking in clinical settings. Molecular methods can be an alternative to morphology-based identification and find special application when only tiny pieces of specimens are available especially in cases of human myiasis. In this preliminary study, we explored the utility of mitochondrial C…
