The impact of inversion on the extraction of relational and featural face information was investigated in two fMRI experiments. Unlike previous studies, the contribution of horizontal and vertical spatial relations were considered separately since they have been shown to be differentially vulnerable to face inversion (Goffaux & Rossion, 2007). Hence, inversion largely affects the perception of vertical relations (e.g. eye or mouth height) while the processing of features (e.g. eye shape and surface) and of horizontal relations (e.g. inter-ocular distance) is affected to a far lesser extent. Memory and perception are two tightly interrelated cognitive processes, but the neural level of their interaction remains a matter of debate. Proponents of a late interaction emphasize feedback memory effects on visual processing, whereas others suggest that feed forward processing is affected by memory. In the visual domain, unconscious memory for stable relations among objects is known to influence visually-guided behavior. Recent evidence suggest an early interaction between this form of unconscious memory and visually-driven neural activity: the brain dissociates stable and unstable spatia

Following cerebral anoxia, EC a 55-year-old patient, exhibited a severe and clear-cut pattern of semantic impairments without general intellectual deficit or perceptual difficulty. EC demonstrated a complex neuropsychological picture including a massive visual agnosia and a complete lack of imagery, both of which involved all categories of objects (living and non living) and a category-specific word comprehension deficit limited to animal names. Findings are discussed in the light of the theoretical frameworks currently available in the area of neuropsychology. It is argued that neither the si

Introduction Cerebral/cortical visual impairment (CVI) is a leading cause of childhood visual impairment but remains underrecognized. CVI-related education, awareness, and visual dysfunction screening practices among family medicine physicians remain poorly characterized. This study evaluated CVI education and awareness, visual dysfunction screening, and referral practices among family medicine physicians. This present study evaluated whether similar patterns extend to family medicine physicians. Methods Nebraska family medicine physicians completed an anonymous 60-question electronic survey a

Objective: List-learning tests provide learning, recall, and recognition indices that are often interpreted as reflecting partly distinct memory processes. We used principal component analysis (PCA) and network analysis (NA) as complementary approaches to examine the organization of verbal and visual-design list-learning performance, with particular attention to very-long-delay memory assessed after approximately 1 week. Method: Data were drawn from two normative cohorts of healthy adults (N = 805). Analyses of the conventional learning, delayed-recall, and recognition measures were based on 8

Emotion recognition plays a crucial role in human-computer interaction and affective computing, yet its effectiveness is limited by the difficulty of integrating heterogeneous modalities with fundamentally different structures, such as physiological signals and visual data. In this article, we propose CLMER, a contrastive learning-based multimodal cross-attention framework designed to address the challenges of complex emotion recognition. The framework introduces a serialization strategy that converts pixel-level image data into time-series data, aligning it with the temporal characteristics o

Decoding fine hand movement intention from electroencephalography (EEG) remains challenging due to the poorly discriminative spatial features extracted from sensorimotor areas. A novel action observation (AO) paradigm, which can simultaneously elicit steady-state motion visual evoked potentials (SSMVEP) over the occipital region and sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) from the sensorimotor area, offers a promising alternative to improve recognition accuracy. In this study, we first conducted a systematic analysis of SMR features induced by fine hand movement AO under different spectral properties and ch

In literate adults, an area along the left posterior fusiform gyrus that is often referred to as the "visual word form area" (VWFA) responds particularly strongly to written characters compared with other visually similar stimuli. Theoretical accounts differ in whether they attribute the strong left-lateralization of the VWFA to a left-hemisphere (LH) bias toward visual features used in script, to competition of visual word form processing with that of other visual stimuli processed in the same general cortical territory (especially faces), or to the well established left-lateralization of the

Sensory perception can be modulated by the phase of neural oscillations, especially in the theta and alpha ranges. Oscillatory activity in the visual cortex can be entrained by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) as well as periodic visual stimulation (i.e., flicker). Combined tACS and visual flicker stimulation modulates BOLD response, and concurrent 4-Hz auditory click train, and tACS modulate auditory perception in a phase-dependent way. In this study, we investigated whether phase synchrony between concurrent tACS and periodic visual stimulation (i.e., flicker) can modulate

Olfactory stimulus acquisition is perfectly synchronized with inhalation, which tunes neuronal ensembles for incoming information. Because olfaction is an ancient sensory system that provided a template for brain evolution, we hypothesized that this link persisted, and therefore nasal inhalations may also tune the brain for acquisition of non-olfactory information. To test this, we measured nasal airflow and electroencephalography during various non-olfactory cognitive tasks. We observed that participants spontaneously inhale at non-olfactory cognitive task onset and that such inhalations shif

The left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) is a critical region in reading. According to the interactive account of reading, the vOT is an interface between the lower-level visual regions and higher-level language areas. One prediction of the interactive account is that orthographic activation in vOT should be automatically influenced by semantics and phonology. In the current study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a masked priming paradigm with a relatively short duration (150 ms) to examine whether language information automatically influences vOT during Chinese

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a common disorder affecting as much as 15% of the elderly population. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique of neuromodulation that has proven to influence performance in different cognitive domains.
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated the effects on cognition of 20-day anodal tDCS in 17 MCI patients compared with 17 matched MCI patients.
METHODS: Patients underwent neuropsychological evaluation at baseline and then were randomly assigned to the anodal or sham group. The tDCS protocol consisted in 20 min, 5

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been linked to alterations in both brain structure and function. However, the neural basis of the most commonly reported neuropsychological deficit in T1D, psychomotor speed, remains severely understudied. To begin to address this, the current study focuses on the neural dynamics underlying motor control using magnetoencephalographic (MEG) imaging. Briefly, 40 young adults with T1D who were clear of common comorbidities (e.g., vascular disease, retinopathy, etc.) and a demographically-matched group of 40 controls without T1D completed an arrow-based flanker movement t

Past research has identified anatomically specific sites within the posterior inferior temporal gyrus (PITG) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) areas that are engaged during arithmetic processing. Although a small region of the PITG (known as the number form area) is selectively engaged in the processing of numerals, its surrounding area is activated during both digit and number word processing. In eight participants with intracranial electrodes, we compared the timing and selectivity of electrophysiological responses in the number form area-surround and IPS regions during arithmetic processin

ERP research on task switching has revealed distinct transient and sustained positive waveforms (latency circa 300-900 ms) while shifting task rules or stimulus-response (S-R) mappings. However, it remains unclear whether such switch-related positivities show similar scalp topography and index context-updating mechanisms akin to those posed for domain-general (i.e., classic P300) positivities in many task domains. To examine this question, ERPs were recorded from 31 young adults (18-30 years) while they were intermittently cued to switch or repeat their perceptual categorization of Gabor grati

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to explore how conduct, hyperactivity/inattention, and emotional symptoms are associated with neural reactivity to social-emotional stimuli, and the extent to which psychosocial stress modulates these relationships.
METHOD: Participants were community adolescents recruited as part of the European IMAGEN study. Bilateral amygdala regions of interest were used to assess the relationship between the three symptom domains and functional MRI neural reactivity during passive viewing of dynamic angry and neutral facial expressions. We developed and validated a symptom scale that can be used to identify "trypophobia", in which individuals experience aversion induced by images of clusters of circular objects. The trypophobia questionnaire (TQ) was based on reports of various symptom types, but it nevertheless demonstrated a single construct, with high internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The TQ scores predicted discomfort from trypophobic images, but not neutral or unpleasant images, and did not correlate with anxiety. Using image filtering, we also reduced the excess energy at midrange spatial frequencies ass

Difficult decisions often require evaluation of samples of evidence acquired sequentially. A sensible strategy is to accumulate evidence, weighted by its reliability, until sufficient support is attained. An optimal statistical approach would accumulate evidence in units of logarithms of likelihood ratios (logLR) to a desired level. Studies of perceptual decisions suggest that the brain approximates an analogous procedure, but a direct test of accumulation, in units of logLR, to a threshold in units of cumulative logLR is lacking. We trained rhesus monkeys to make decisions based on a sequence

The tendency to worry is a facet of neuroticism that has been shown to mediate the relationship between neuroticism and symptoms of depression and anxiety. The aim of the current study was to investigate the neural correlates of state worry in association with neuroticism. One-hundred twenty participants were selected from an initially recruited sample of 240 women based on their neuroticism score. First, participants completed a questionnaire to assess the excessiveness and uncontrollability of pathological worry. Second, we measured brain activation with functional magnetic resonance imaging

Two experiments were conducted to study effects of modality, temporal position, and their interaction on comparisons of successive stimuli. In Experiment 1, intramodal (tone-tone and line-line) and crossmodal (tone-line and line-tone) stimulus pairs, with two interstimulus intervals (ISIs), 400 and 2,000 ms, were presented. Participants indicated which stimulus was the "stronger." Time-order errors (TOEs) were assessed using the D% measure and were found in all types of pairs. Variation in TOEs across conditions was well accounted for by changes in parameters (stimulus weights, reference level
