Effect of Microstructure and Compressive Residual Stress on the Fatigue Performance of AISI 4140 Steel with QPQ Salt-Bath Nitro-Carburizing.

Quench-polish-quench (QPQ) nitro-carburizing of AISI 4140 steel in a salt bath was performed in this study. Nitro-carburizing in a salt bath enhanced the formation of Fe-nitride on the outer surface layer. Moreover, the oxidizing treatment formed a thin oxide layer decorated on the outermost part of the QPQ-treated sample. The dense compound layer formed after nitro-carburizing in a salt bath consisted of refined granular Fe3N and transformed to Fe2N after post-oxidation treatment. Micro-shot peening (MSP) was adopted before QPQ treatment to increase the treated steel's fatigue performance. Th

Assessing plant phenological changes based on drivers of spring phenology.

Understanding plant phenological responses to climate warming is essential for predicting shifts in plant communities and ecosystems. However, this remains challenging when sensitivity analyses overlook the underlying drivers of spring phenology. In this article, we present a new measure phenological lag to quantify the overall effect of phenological constraints, including insufficient winter chilling, photoperiod, and environmental stresses, based on observed response and that expected from species-specific changes in spring temperatures, that is, changes in spring forcing (degree days) from

Cytological and Ploidy Analyses Revealing Fertility Defects of Cultivar Cyperus esculentus L. in China.

Cyperus esculentus L., commonly known as Yellow Nutsedge or Tiger Nut, belongs to the Sedge family (Cyperaceae), which is widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions around the world. The species is particularly noted for its underground tuber, which is rich in starch and oil, and can be used for both food and industrial purposes. However, cultivated C. esculentus rarely flowers in the field, and when it does, flowering is often accompanied by sterility, significantly hindering the development of superior varieties through sexual hybridization. Our investigation into the causes of pol

Bovine ephemeral fever: From underestimated illness to emerging threat - A review of pathogenesis, economic impact, and future control strategies.

Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) is an arthropod-borne viral disease caused by the bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) of the genus Ephemerovirus in the family Rhabdoviridae. BEF affects domestic and wild ruminants, particularly cattle and water buffaloes. BEF outbreaks are seasonal in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, aligning with the summer and autumn seasons in temperate zones and during the monsoons in tropical areas. Vectors, like biting midges (Culicoides spp.) and mosquitoes (Anopheles and Culex spp.), facilitate BEFV transmission. The disease presents a spectrum of clinical si

Disruption of seasonal influenza circulation and evolution during the 2009 H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics in Southeastern Asia.

East, South, and Southeast Asia (together referred to as Southeastern Asia hereafter) have been recognized as critical areas fuelling the global circulation of seasonal influenza. However, the seasonal influenza migration network within Southeastern Asia remains unclear, including how pandemic-related disruptions altered this network. We leveraged genetic, epidemiological, and airline travel data between 2007-2023 to characterise the dispersal patterns of influenza A/H3N2 and B/Victoria viruses both out of and within Southeastern Asia, including during perturbations by the 2009 A/H1N1 and COVI

Equipmentless point-of-care testing of dengue antibodies using ELISA and smartphones.

Infections with the dengue virus affect more than 100 million people every year. The infected can present a mild form of the disease or a severe form, which can, eventually, lead to death. Dengue prevails in tropical and subtropical regions, although increased incidence has been observed in the last years in tempered climates. Vaccines are available but testing for previous infection is often required prior to application. Commercially available ELISA and rapid tests for the diagnosis of dengue IgG do not fulfill individually the performance required by control agencies. In this context, rapid

Are we doing our best to contain the spread of West Nile virus? Evaluating intervention efficacy through mathematical modelling.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging vector-borne pathogen that is becoming increasingly prevalent in temperate regions. The development of effective intervention strategies is crucial for limiting its spread; however, the adaptability and ubiquity of mosquitoes, combined with the complexity of the WNV transmission cycle, continue to hinder its eradication. METHODS: This study employs a deterministic compartmental model to evaluate the effectiveness of ten intervention strategies targeting either the mosquito (vector) or avian (host) population in the Lombardy region of Italy. Heterologous Expression, Purification, and Characterization of a High-Temperature Requirement A (HtrA) Protease Homologue from Leptospira.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease affecting humans in the tropical and temperate regions. Considerably high mortality rate (60 per 1000 adult) and associated morbidity necessitate the need for efficient diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for this disease. Proteins that play crucial roles in the invasion/pathogenesis are potential candidates for the diagnosis/therapeutics. High temperature requirement A (HtrA) is a protein expressed by many pathogenic bacteria, important for their virulence and survival. In this study, we have amplified, cloned, and expressed one of the HtrA homologues (Ht

Widespread pharmaceutical exposure at concentrations of concern for a subtropical coastal fishery: Bonefish (Albula vulpes).

Pharmaceuticals have been acknowledged as an important contaminant of emerging concern with the potential to cause adverse effects in exposed fauna. Most research has focused on temperate freshwater systems; therefore, there is a pressing need to quantify pharmaceutical exposure in subtropical coastal marine systems. This study investigated the prevalence of pharmaceutical exposure to bonefish (Albula vulpes) in subtropical South Florida, USA, and evaluated the relative risk of detected concentrations to elicit pharmacological effects. The influence of sampling region, season (within or outsid

A universe of human gut-derived bacterial prophages: unveiling the hidden viral players in intestinal microecology.

Prophages, which are an existing form of temperate phages that integrate into host genomes, have been found extensively present in diverse bacterial species. The human gut microbiome, characterized by its complexity, dynamism, and interconnectivity among multiple species, remains inadequately understood in terms of the global landscape of bacterial prophages. Here, we analyzed 43,942 human gut-derived bacterial genomes (439 species of 12 phyla) and identified 105,613 prophage regions in ~ 92% of them. 16254 complete prophages were distributed in ~ 24% of bacteria, indicating an extremely uneve

Migratory birds have a distinct haemosporidian community and are temporally decoupled from vector abundance at a stopover site.

Migratory animals likely play an important role in the geographic spread of parasites. In fact, a common assumption is that parasites are potentially transmitted by migratory animals at temporary stopover sites along migratory routes, yet very few studies have assessed whether transmission at stopover sites can or does occur. We investigated the potential for a group of vector-transmitted parasites, the avian haemosporidians, to be transmitted during migratory stopover periods at Rushton Woods Preserve in Pennsylvania, USA. Using an analysis of 1454 sampled avian hosts, we found that while a c

Synergistic Antimicrobial Mechanism of the Ultrashort Antimicrobial Peptide R3W4V with a Tadpole-like Conformation.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates in combating multidrug-resistant microorganisms because of their unique mode of action. Among these peptides, ultrashort AMPs (USAMPs) possess sequences containing less than 10 amino acids and have some advantages over traditional AMPs. However, one of the main limitations of designing novel and highly active USAMPs is that their mechanism of action at the molecular level is not well-known. In this article, we report the antimicrobial mechanism of the USAMP verine (R3W4V) with high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Here, by

Diversity, toxicity, and distribution of potentially toxic diatoms in Antarctic waters--With description of Pseudo-nitzschia meridionalis sp. nov. and P. glacialis sp. nov.

Diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, known for their potential toxicity, are integral to the phytoplankton community of the Southern Ocean, which surrounds Antarctica. Despite their ecological importance, the diversity and toxicity of Pseudo-nitzschia in this region remain underexplored. Globally, these diatoms are notorious for forming harmful algal blooms in temperate and tropical waters, causing significant impacts on marine life, ecosystems, and coastal economies. However, detailed information on the diversity, morphology, and toxicity of Pseudo-nitzschia species in Antarctic waters is l
