OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of pediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) on postoperative feeding status and longitudinal weight gain after surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary care pediatric hospital.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We identified 30 consecutive pediatric patients undergoing LTR from November 2005 to October 2008. Demographics, stenosis grade, surgical procedure, decannulation status, preoperative feeding status and weight, discharge feeding status, and weights at follow-up were collected. Weights were plotted on standardized growth c

CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of sleep apnoea among patients following treatment of head and neck carcinomas seems to be slightly higher than in the normal population. The possible importance of tumour treatment features, especially transient tracheostoma, needs further assessment.
OBJECTIVES: The epidemiology of sleep apnoea in patients following the treatment of head and neck cancer remains unclear. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of sleep apnoea in head and neck cancer patients by characterizing their clinical, anatomical and tumour treatment features.

The oropharynx is a complex anatomical area gathering different subsites. Optimal treatment of oropharyngeal carcinoma remains still controversial. In early stages, surgery and radiation therapy are known to provide comparable oncologic results. Till recently, advanced tumors were best treated using primary radical surgery followed by postoperative radiotherapy, but new "organ sparing" approaches like concurent chemoradiotherapy seem now able to challenge primary surgery with a better functional outcome. This paper is focused on the role of primary surgery for cancer of the base of tongue and

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain changes in laryngeal anatomy and function associated with poor voice outcome after laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) and to specifically describe dysphonia in pediatric patients treated for subglottic stenosis.
DESIGN: A survey was undertaken of patients having undergone LTR for subglottic stenosis. Twelve patients were recruited during the year 1990-1991. Nine patients were able to complete the endoscopic portion of the protocol that included fiberoptic and direct laryngoscopy. Speech samples were qualitatively evaluable in only six of nine patients (vocal quality,

The cases of 152 patients with transglottic carcinoma were reviewed. There were 31% T2, 39% T3, and 30% T4 lesions. Twenty-six percent of patients had neck node metastases at initial presentation, and 19% with no neck dissection or radical irradiation to the neck subsequently developed neck metastases. Patients treated with voice conservation surgery +/- neck dissection +/- radiation (VCS +/- ND +/- R) had small transglottic carcinomas, whereas total laryngectomy +/- neck dissection +/- radiation (TL +/- ND +/- R) was used for patients with larger lesions. The reason for radiation alone (RA) w

The etiology of 389 cases of partial or complete bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis has been determined and classified. One hundred and forty-nine were infants and children 12 years of age and under; 240 were adults, age 13 and older. In the infants and children the paralyses were congenital in 82 cases, of which 43 were associated with other congenital anomalies, and 39 were without associated anomalies. Fifty-nine cases were considered acquired, most being secondary to underlying congenital anomalies, particularly the associated findings of meningomyelocele, Arnold-Chiari malformation,

The effects of doxapram on carotid chemoreceptor activity and on ventilation (phrenic-nerve activity) were tested before and after denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors in cats. Doxapram was found to be a potent stimulus to the carotid chemoreceptors; the stimulation produced by 1.0 mg/kg doxapram, iv, equalled that produced by a Pao2 of 38 torr. Doxapram also increased phrenic-nerve activity in doses as low as 0.2 mg/kg, iv. After denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors, doxapram in doses as large as 6 mg/kg failed to stimulate ventilation. It is concluded that (in anesthetized ca

BACKGROUND: Frontofacial monobloc advancement (FFMBA) carries a well-recognized risk of postoperative infection owing to the communication c … te variables were examined in univariable analyses: sex, operative time, intraoperative blood loss, tracheotomy, ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt, and institution of first cranial vault surgery. Categorical variables were compared using Fisher's exact test and continuous variables using the Mann-Whitney U test.
RESULTS: Postoperative infection occurred in 6 o …
