Pott's paraplegia associated with pregnancy is a serious problem and is difficult to treat, as not much literature is available regarding its management. Such a case, where the multidisciplinary team approach gave good neonatal and maternal outcome, is reported here.

We describe a patient with a presumed intramedullary tuberculoma treated only with antituberculous therapy. MRI showed a ring-enhancing annular lesion in the thoracic spinal cord with a distant syringomyelic cavity, which improved after therapy. MRI in this case allowed us not only to achieve a presumptive diagnosis but also to assess the therapeutic response, making surgical exploration unnecessary.

Accumulating clinical experience has gradually outlined the epidemiology of acute bacterial meningitis, including the epidemic and the sporadic forms, the customary clinical signs related to different age groups and causative organisms, and methods of rapid diagnosis by laboratory examinations. Effective treatment, which continues to evolve, emerged in the 1940s with the development of antibacterial antimicrobials, first with the sulfonamides and then with the penicillins. The literature relative to these aspects of the disease has been abundant in the past few years. This article is directed

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis has been induced in guinea pigs using the encephalitogenic tryptophan peptide as antigen and a hydrosoluble adjuvant extracted from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, var. hominis, strain H37Ra. The maximum response was observed using 100mug of adjuvant per animal. This is a quantity of adjuvant substantially higher than was necessary to induce disease utilizing the whole myelin basic protein as antigen.

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculous atlantoaxial dislocation is a rare disease entity. However, tuberculosis continues to be endemic in developing countries. Its earliest clinical presentation may be nonspecific, and delay in diagnosis may lead to irreversible neurological deficit. The management of tuberculous atlantoaxial dislocation includes ventral cervicomedullary decompression, occipitocervical arthrodesis, and administration of antituberculous medications.
METHODS: Eighteen patients with tuberculous atlantoaxial dislocation who presented with neck pain and/or occipital headache, restriction of neck

BACKGROUND: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) after nonotologic surgery is unusual, with most occurrences reported in patients having cardiopulmonary bypass. Reports of SNHL after nonotologic noncardiac surgery are rare, particularly after spine surgery. In patients undergoing subarachnoid anesthesia or intradural surgery, loss of cerebrospinal fluid pressure can result in hearing loss and cranial nerve palsy.
METHODS: A 70-year-old male patient had ankylosing spondylitis with an Anderson lesion T11-12 with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and American Spinal Injury Association Impairm

The clinical and neurophysiological efficiency of high-intensity transpinal rhythmic magnetic stimulation was studied during surgical treatment in patients with tuberculosis spondylitis complicated by neurological disorders. Its highest efficiency was determined in patients with minor neurological disorders, radicular syndrome, and paresis. Magnetic stimulation was shown to affect the regression of neurological symptoms. The use of electric neuromyography allows quantitative assessment of the course of reparative processes in the pathways.

PURPOSE: Surgical site infection (SSI) continues to be one of the most common post-operative complications in most spine surgeries. Patients with tuberculosis (TB) of spine are more at risk of developing this complication due to a number of reasons. This adds to significant morbidity and economic burden on patients adversely affecting the mental status and quality of life of patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of local streptomycin in preventing SSI in patients undergoing surgical management of spinal TB.
METHODS: In total, 56 patients who underwent surgical management

Nontraumatic myelopathy causes severe morbidity and is not uncommon in Africa. Clinically, patients often present with paraplegia, and extrinsic cord compression and transverse myelitis are most common causes. Data on exact pathogenesis are scanty because of limitations in diagnostic methods. In Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi, we recorded consecutive patients presenting with nontraumatic paraplegia for maximally 6 months between January and July 2010 and from March to December 2011. The diagnostic workup included imaging and examining blood, stool, urine, sputum, and cerebr

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developed and developing countries. The diagnosis of this disease remains a problem. We report the detection of specific antigenic fraction (antigen B) of Cysticercus cellulosae by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in various fractions of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation, for the diagnosis of human NCC. Forty patients attending or admitted to Nehru Hospital, Chandigarh were included in the study: 10 with suspected NCC, 20 with other neurological disease

A molecular response to cell injury is the formation of chemotactic mediators that attract neutrophils to sites of inflammation. The question whether neutrophils contribute to circulating levels of kinins was examined in infections and inflammatory disorders. This novel hypothesis was tested using circulating neutrophils harvested from patients with tuberculosis meningitis and pneumonia. These neutrophils showed a distinct loss of only the kinin moiety from the kininogen located on the external surface. A similar loss of the kinin peptide was observed on the synovial fluid neutrophils obtained

W/Wv mice have been extensively used as an important model to study the maturation/differentiation and pathophysiology of mast cells. These albino mice have been shown to have less than 1% of the mast cells found in the skin of their +/+ controls or other normal mice. Moreover, no mast cells are detected in other organs even though they apparently have an adequate number of mast cell precursors. Presumably, these precursors do not respond appropriately to microenvironmental growth factors, while 'normal' precursors from the +/+ controls of S1/S1d-deficient mice mature appropriately in the tiss

Background Radiculomedullary lesions represent a significant public health issue, with their epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic characteristics varying depending on whether they are of traumatic or non-traumatic origin. The aim of this study was to compare clinical, therapeutic, and postoperative aspects between traumatic radiculomedullary lesions (TRML) and non-traumatic radiculomedullary lesions (NTRML). Methods This was a prospective cohort study conducted from 2020 to 2023 involving patients suffering from radiculomedullary lesions operated at the Department of Neurosurgery, Univer

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic debilitating immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS) driven by demyelination and gray matter neurodegeneration. We previously reported an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) MS mouse model with elevated serum CXCL1 that developed severe and prolonged neuron damage. Our findings suggested that CXCR2 signaling may be important in neuronal damage, thus implicating neutrophils, which express CXCR2 in abundance, as a potential cell type involved. The goals of this study were to determine if CXCR2 signaling in neutrophi

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Hyperkyphosis confers a significant risk for neurologic deterioration as well as compromised cardiopulmonary function. Posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR) is a challenging but effective technique for spinal cord decompression and deformity correction that even under the setting of limited resources can be performed to reduce the technical difficulties, the operating time, and possibly the complications of the traditional two-staged vertebral column resection (VCR).
PURPOSE: To report on the results of VCR performed through a single posterior approach (PVCR) in the
