An increasing number of cases of echinococcosis in Thailand have been imported, probably native infections and medical transfers. Serodiagno … est had 100% sensitivity and 42% specificity. Only Malayan filariasis, onchocercosis, fascioliasis, amebiasis, giardiasis and blastocystosis gave true negatives. Antibodies from nematodiases strongly cross-reacted with HCF30.10 Ag. Nine of fifty (18%) healthy serum controls produced higher OD-values than the cut-off. The routine ELISA uses the HCF30.10 Ag t …

Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) is a rare but highly fatal central nervous system infection caused primarily by Acanthamoeba spp. and Balamuthia mandrillaris. Delayed diagnosis and the absence of standardized treatment protocols contribute to mortality exceeding 90%. This review summarizes current knowledge regarding GAE pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapeutic challenges, and emerging treatment strategies. The pathogenesis involves amoebic adhesion, secretion of proteases and phospholipases, host inflammatory responses, and blood-brain barrier disruption. Recent advances in molecular dia

The purpose of this study is to expand our knowledge of the diversity of lobose amoebae (Amoebozoa) that can be isolated from the gills of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) affected by nodular gill disease (NGD). A new strain of an amoebozoan, Ptolemeba bulliensis Watson et al. 2014 (Tubulinea) was isolated, studied and identified from the gills of farmed trout showing signs of NGD in the northwest of Russia. The strain was identified using morphological and molecular (small subunit [SSU] ribosomal RNA gene sequence data) characters. Actin and cytochrome c oxidase (Cox1)

INTRODUCTION: Naegleria fowleri is a pathogenic free-living amoeba that causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and difficult-to-diagnose form of meningitis. By testing patient cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for ergosterol, a membrane component unique to fungi and amoeba, cases of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis may be distinguished from cases of bacterial and viral meningitis.
METHODS: Pooled CSF was fortified with ergosterol, extracted, filtered, and measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Measurement method precision, sensitivity, recovery, and stability were

Cerebral amebic encephalitis due to Balamuthia mandrillaris is a rare yet typically fatal disease. As such, identification of the clinical characteristics, appropriate diagnostic workup and commencement of treatment is frequently delayed. Here, we present a case of a 4-year-old male with a B. mandrillaris cerebral abscess successfully treated with expedited neurosurgical resection and broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy.

An 82-year-old man, who was healthy and had worked as a farmer, experienced worsening neurological symptoms over a seven-month period, which eventually caused his death. Multiple fluctuating brain lesions were detected radiographically. Clinically, sarcoidosis was ranked high among the differential diagnoses because of the presence of skin lesions showing granulomatous inflammation, confirmed by biopsy. The patient's cerebrospinal fluid was also examined, but no definitive diagnosis was made while he was alive. An autopsy revealed multiple granulomatous amebic encephalitis lesions in the brain

Entamoeba histolytica causes amoebic liver abscess (ALA) in humans. The injury of target cells by E. histolytica includes processes controlled by the ubiquitin Ehub. Previously, we found immunodominance of Ehub glycan moieties using immunized rabbits. In this work, we analysed dominance of antibodies to the glycoprotein Ehub in the sera from 52 patients with ALA. Controls were sera from 20 healthy people living in endemic areas with a high seroprevalence of antibodies to amoebas, and 20 patients with alcoholic hepatitis (AH) to rule out the cross-reaction of Ehub with autoantibodies induced by

Interstitial keratitis is a non-ulcerative, non-suppurative, more or less vascularized inflammation of the corneal stroma. The corneal lesions result from the host response to bacterial, viral (40% of cases) or parasitic antigens, or from an autoimmune response (1% of cases) without active corneal infection. The natural history of the disease is divided into two phases: acute and cicatricial. This type of keratitis is less common than ulcerative bacterial keratitis, but it is a non-negligible cause of visual loss. It is associated with systemic or infectious disease and requires early diagnosi

CASE DESCRIPTION A 22-year-old male gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) housed in a zoo was evaluated for signs of lethargy, head-holding, and cervical stiffness followed by development of neurologic abnormalities including signs of depression, lip droop, and tremors. CLINICAL FINDINGS Physical examination under general anesthesia revealed a tooth root abscess and suboptimal body condition. A CBC and serum biochemical analysis revealed mild anemia, neutrophilia and eosinopenia consistent with a stress leukogram, and signs consistent with dehydration. Subsequent CSF analysis revealed lymphocytic

Granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE) is a rare and oftentimes fatal disease in immune compromised patients caused by free living amebae Acanthamoeba and Balamuthia. We report a patient in whom GAE secondary to Acanthamoeba was the initial presentation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in a 41-year-old male, and discuss the FDG positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging findings that preceded the pathological diagnosis. The PET results provided complementary information when coupled with the MR brain findings. Improved understanding of the clinical and imaging find

Pathogenic free living amoeba like Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba spp., and Balamuthia mandrillaris are known to cause fatal "amoebic meningoencephalitis" by acquiring different route of entries to the brain. The host immune response to these protist pathogens differs from each another, as evidenced by the postmortem gross and microscopic findings from the brains of the affected patients. Cited with the expression of 'brain eating amoeba' when the infection is caused by N. fowleri, this expression is making its way into parasitology journals and books. The impression that it imparts is, as if

Protozoan infections of the skin, particularly cutaneous amoebiasis, are rare in HIV-positive patients. We report a case of amoebiasis cutis in an HIV-positive truck driver with a history of frequent unprotected sexual exposures. He presented with multiple painful ulcers and sinuses with purulent discharge, necrotic slough and scarring in the perianal and gluteal region for the last 2 years. He was positive for HIV-1 and -2. Cutaneous biopsy revealed numerous Entamoeba histolytica in the trophozoite form, in addition to an inflammatory infiltrate and necrotic debris. He responded well to oral

We report here the first Portuguese case of acute fatal granulomatous encephalitis attributed to Balamuthia mandrillaris, initially thought to be a brain tumor, which had a progressive and fatal outcome. Balamuthia mandrillaris is a free-living amoeba recognized as an uncommon agent of granulomatous encephalitis. Infections have been identified in immunocompromised hosts and in immunocompetent pediatric patients. Balamuthia infections are very rare, with only two reported cases in Europe. The case presented here occurred in a previously healthy boy who died 5 weeks after the onset of the sympt

BACKGROUND: Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is an emerging disease with a rapidly fatal outcome. Only eight reports of cured cases have appeared in the medical literature to date.
METHODS: A 10-year-old boy developed PAM caused by Naegleria fowleri 1 week after swimming in an irrigation canal. He was admitted to our hospital after 9 h of severe headache and vomiting, fever, ataxic gait, mild confusion, and seizures were evident. Trophozoites were identified in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Treatment with intravenous (i.v.) dexamethasone, amphotericin B, fluconaloze, and oral rifampi

Here we present the neuropathological, ultrastructural, and radiological features of Sappinia diploidea, a newly recognized human pathogen. The patient was a 38-year-old man with visual disturbances, headache, and a seizure. Brain images showed a solitary mass in the posterior left temporal lobe. The mass was composed of necrotizing hemorrhagic inflammation that contained free-living amebae. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed that the organism was not a species of ameba previously known to cause encephalitis. Trophozoites had a highly distinctive double nucleus, and transmission electron mic
