BACKGROUND: The proconvulsive properties of tramadol, bupropion, and nortriptyline have been well documented. Spinal fractures secondary to drug-induced seizures have been rarely reported.
CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old female presented with a chief complaint of back pain. She went to bed feeling well in a separate room from her husband. During the previous night, he heard a noise and went into her room, finding her confused and twisted in an awkward position on her bed. Later she complained to him of severe back pain, prompting transport to a hospital. Shortly after arrival in the emergency depa

PURPOSE: Diffuse tissue damage from impact or blast traumatic brain injury (TBI) degrades information processing throughout the brain, often resulting in impairments in sensorimotor function. We have developed an eye-movement assessment test, consisting of a simple, appropriately randomized, radial tracking task together with a broad set of oculometric measures that can be combined to yield a sensitive overall indicator of sensorimotor functional status. We show here that this multidimensional method can be used to detect and characterize sensorimotor deficits associated with TBI.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging is key for investigation of suspected newborn brain abnormalities. Access is limited in low-resource settings and challenging in infants needing intensive care. Portable ultralow field (ULF) MRI is showing promise in bedside adult brain imaging. Use in infants and children has been limited as brain-tissue composition differences necessitate sequence modification. The aim of this study was to develop neonatal-specific ULF structural sequences and test these across a range of gestational maturities and pathologies to inform future validation studies.

The Riddoch syndrome is thought to be caused by damage to the primary visual cortex (V1), usually following a vascular event. This study shows that damage to the anatomical input to V1, i.e., the optic radiations, can result in selective visual deficits that mimic the Riddoch syndrome. The results also highlight the differential susceptibility of the magnocellular and parvocellular visual systems to injury. Overall, this study offers new insights that will improve our understanding of the impact of brain injury and neurosurgery on the visual pathways. The Riddoch syndrome, characterised by the

Loss of somatosensory drive results in functional reorganization of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI). While the phenomenon of functional cortical reorganization is well established, it remains unknown whether in humans, functional reorganization results from changes in brain anatomy, or simply reflects an unmasking of already existing dormant synapses. In 20 subjects with complete thoracic spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and 23 controls, we used functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging to determine whether SI reorganization was associated with changes in SI anatomy. SCI resulted i

The cumulative effects of repetitive subclinical head impacts during sports may result in chronic white matter (WM) changes and possibly, neurodegenerative sequelae. In this pilot study, we investigated the longitudinal WM changes over the course of two consecutive high-school football seasons and explored the long-term effects of a jugular vein compression collar on these WM alterations. Diffusion tensor imaging data were prospectively collected both pre- and postseason in the two consecutive seasons. Participants were assigned into either collar or noncollar groups. Tract-based spatial stati

A total of 355 infants have been treated with ECMO at our hospital between 1985 and 1996, 271 of whom have been enrolled in an ongoing prospective study; of the 271 infants enrolled, 223 (82%) survived, and most function within the normal range of development. Nevertheless, handicapping sequelae, including spastic forms of CP, hearing loss, and cognitive deficiencies at school age, have been noted in a significant minority of ECMO-treated survivors. The need for RCCA cannulation during venoarterial ECMO may increase the risk of a cerebrovascular injury, and lateralized CBF abnormalities have b

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration is highly prevalent among veterans. Suggested risk factors of IPV perpetration include combat exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, alcohol use, and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). While the underlying brain pathophysiological characteristics associated with IPV perpetration remain largely unknown, previous studies have linked aggression and violence to alterations of the limbic system. Here, we investigate whether IPV perpetration is associated with limbic microstructural abnormalities in military veterans. Fu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at risk of cognitive dysfunction independent of stroke. Diminished functional connectivity in select large-scale networks and white matter integrity reflect the neurologic consequences of SCD. Because chronic transfusion therapy is neuroprotective in preventing stroke and strengthening executive function abilities in people with SCD, we hypothesized that red blood cell (RBC) transfusion facilitates the acute reversal of disruptions in functional connectivity while white matter integrity remains unaffected.

Neurological disorders can alter motor control, cognition, and speech production in subtle ways that are difficult to detect using standard diagnostic tools. Because conventional imaging techniques such as CT and MRI often fail to reveal functional abnormalities, there is growing interest in non-invasive digital health approaches. This study investigates the potential of speech-based deep learning for detecting concussion-related dysfunction using structured speech tasks. Audio recordings from 225 high school and college athletes (approximately 200 retained after quality filtering) performing

Longitudinal changes in white matter (WM) microstructure from acute underweight to early weight restoration in anorexia nervosa (AN), and their underlying mechanisms, remain largely unexplored. Thus, this study aims to examine the relationship between microstructural alterations across WM regions and neurofilament light (NF-L), a marker of axonal injury; brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neuroprotective molecule; and leptin, a neuroplasticity-promoting hormone, during acute underweight and following short-term weight restoration. Status epilepticus is most commonly associated with structural, metabolic, infectious, autoimmune, or toxic etiologies. Plant-related toxic exposures are uncommon causes of new-onset status epilepticus and remain poorly characterized. Ageratum conyzoides (billygoat weed) is an invasive plant widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and is frequently used in traditional medicine. We report the case of a 76-year-old male with no prior history of epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, dementia, head injury, alcohol use, or substance abuse who developed generalized convulsive status epil

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1)-producing carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) are rare but associated with extremely high mortality because of extensive antimicrobial resistance and poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no published reports of pneumocephalus associated with infection caused by NDM-1-producing K. pneumoniae.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report an 18-year-old woman who developed bloodstream infection and metastatic CNS infection following severe thora

Background and Clinical Significance: Cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR) is a rare paraneoplastic autoimmune retinopathy caused by antibodies targeting tumor antigens with cross-reactivity to retinal proteins. Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) results from autoimmune injury to cerebellar tissue triggered by onconeural antigens. We report a rare case of CAR occurring concurrently with seronegative PCD in a patient with poorly differentiated tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma, and we describe the long-term sequelae of CAR-related macular atrophy; Case Presentation: A 66-year-old male

Concussion is a pervasive health issue in the present day. Increased prevalence in recent years has indicated a need to improve the current understanding of minor traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Effort has been devoted to understanding the underlying pathophysiology of TBIs, but some mechanisms remain unknown. Potentially lethal secondary effects of concussion include second impact syndrome and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), introducing long-term considerations for the management of mTBI. Post-concussion syndrome is another long-term consequence of concussion and may be influenced by b
