The effect of drought on physiological and agronomic traits of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter].

Increased intensity and duration of drought as a consequence of global warming is resulting in increased crop failure and food insecurity. This is particularly prevalent in regions where agriculture is rain fed, as the resultant water deficit in crop tissues as a consequence of insufficient soil moisture to sustain metabolic integrity results in subcellular damage and, ultimately tissue death. Different plants can perceive moisture stress stimuli from their environment and develop adaptive mechanisms to cope with water stress. However, the response of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], a st

In situ experimental evidence of the effects of commercial sunscreens and their ultraviolet filters on Posidonia oceanica in a Mediterranean island (Formentera) during summer.

Sunscreen products usually contain a wide range of substances, including inorganic and organic ultraviolet (UV) filters, which belong to the main groups of contaminants of emerging concern for marine ecosystems. Research on the effects of sunscreen pollution in the Mediterranean marine biota is scarce, limiting the information necessary to promote sustainable coastal tourism through environmental policies that protect priority species for conservation against potentially harmful substances. The impacts of sunscreen components on Posidonia oceanica were assessed through short-term (48 h) in sit

Boosting β-carotene and storage materials productivities by two-stage mixed and monochromatic exposure stresses on Dunaliella salina.

Growth and product formation of Dunaliella salina, a potent β-carotene source, were investigated under single and two-stage monochromic and mixed illuminations using two LEDs, each emitting red (R), blue (B), or white (W) light. Targeting cell growth in single-stage, WW, RR, and BB, as well as RB illumination, were compared and mixed RB illumination was found most supportive showing the highest cell growth of 1.81 ± 0.008 g/L. Subsequently, new two-stage illuminations (RB-BB and RB-RR) were designed to investigate growth and bio-product formation using RB illumination similarly in the 1st stag

Transcriptomic and physiological analysis reveals interplay between salicylic acid and drought stress in citrus tree floral initiation.

Salicylic acid (SA) and drought stress promote more flowering in sweet orange. The physiological response and molecular mechanism underlying stress-induced floral initiation were discovered by transcriptome profiling. Numerous flowering-regulated genes were identified, and ectopically expressed CsLIP2A promotes early flowering in Arabidopsis. Floral initiation is a critical developmental mechanism associated with external factors, and citrus flowering is mainly regulated by drought stress. However, little is known about the intricate regulatory network involved in stress-induced flowering in c

Landscape genomics: natural selection drives the evolution of mitogenome in penguins.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondria play a key role in the balance of energy and heat production, and therefore the mitochondrial genome is under natural selection by environmental temperature and food availability, since starvation can generate more efficient coupling of energy production. However, selection over mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes has usually been evaluated at the population level. We sequenced by NGS 12 mitogenomes and with four published genomes, assessed genetic variation in ten penguin species distributed from the equator to Antarctica. Signatures of selection of 13 mitochondrial prote

Methylmercury in rivers draining cultivated watersheds.

Total mercury (THg) concentrations in streams draining cultivated watersheds in Minnesota, USA are strongly correlated with total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations, varying widely in response to precipitation-driven inputs of soil-derived suspended sediments. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in these waterways have not been studied, and little is known about mercury uptake mechanisms in resident fish populations. To begin to identify factors influencing MeHg concentrations and loadings in these streams, we measured THg and MeHg concentrations in unfiltered whole water samples from the

Differential expression of genes encoding the light-dependent and light-independent enzymes for protochlorophyllide reduction during development in loblolly pine.

The expression patterns of the two distinct subfamilies of genes (designated porA and porB) encoding the light-dependent NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductases (PORs) in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were examined. Transcripts arising from both gene subfamilies were shown to be present at high levels in the cotyledons of dark-grown pine seedlings and to a lesser extent in their stems. Exposure of dark-grown seedlings to light resulted in increased levels of both porA and porB transcripts, as well as increased levels of mRNAs encoding other photosynthesis-related gene products, suggesting t

Fulvic acid-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles enhance Chinese kale tolerance to saline-alkali stress via antioxidant and metabolic reprogramming.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NP) have emerged as a promising eco-friendly approach to mitigate various abiotic stresses. However, the role of surface-coated Fe3O4 NP with bio-derived organic compounds, particularly fulvic acid, in mitigating saline-alkali stress in Chinese kale plants has not yet been explored. In this study, we investigated for the first time the effects of green-synthesized Fe3O4 NP, both uncoated (UFe) and fulvic acid-coated (FFA), on mitigating saline-alkali stress in Chinese kale, with a specific focus on modulating physiological responses

Adaptation of plant photosynthetic metabolism to extreme CO2 levels in Yellowstone revealed by in vivo fluorescence dynamics.

INTRODUCTION: While CO2 enrichment studies have provided valuable insights into how plants respond to elevated CO2 levels expected under future climate conditions (up to ~700 ppm), if and how photosynthesis can adapt to more extreme CO2 levels in nature remains yet unknown. Here, we investigate changes in photosynthetic metabolism in a C3 plant growing near high CO2 emission sources in Yellowstone National Park, at levels up to 6000 ppm CO2. METHODS: We analyze chlorophyll variable fluorescence emission kinetics to identify changes in the photosynthetic electron transport chain (PETC) between

Synergistic Effect of Melatonin and Lysinibacillus fusiformis L. (PLT16) to Mitigate Drought Stress via Regulation of Hormonal, Antioxidants System, and Physio-Molecular Responses in Soybean Plants.

Drought is one of the most detrimental factors that causes significant effects on crop development and yield. However, the negative effects of drought stress may be alleviated with the aid of exogenous melatonin (MET) and the use of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). The present investigation aimed to validate the effects of co-inoculation of MET and Lysinibacillus fusiformis on hormonal, antioxidant, and physio-molecular regulation in soybean plants to reduce the effects of drought stress. Therefore, ten randomly selected isolates were subjected to various plant-growth-promoting rhizobac

Biopesticide Trunk Injection Into Apple Trees: A Proof of Concept for the Systemic Movement of Mint and Cinnamon Essential Oils.

The use of conventional pesticides is debated because of their multiple potential adverse effects on non-target organisms, human health, pest resistance development and environmental contaminations. In this setting, this study focused on developing alternatives, such as trunk-injected essential oil (EO)-based biopesticides. We analysed the ecophysiology of apple trees (Malus domestica) following the injection of Cinnamomum cassia and Mentha spicata nanoemulsions in the tree's vascular system. Targeted and untargeted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analyses were performed on leaf-contained an

Response of Anopheles gambiae s.l. (Diptera: Culicidae) to larval habitat age in western Kenya highlands.

BACKGROUND: Larval control is of paramount importance in the reduction of vector populations. Previous observations have suggested that, larvae of Anopheles gambiae s.l occur more often in small temporary habitats while other studies showed that long-lasting stable habitats are more productive than unstable habitats. In addition, the physical and biological conditions and stability of larval habitats can change rapidly in natural conditions. Therefore, we examined the effect of larval habitat age on productivity, larval survival and oviposition preference of Anopheles gambiae. METHODS: We sam

Physiological role of exogenous nitric oxide in improving performance, yield and some biochemical aspects of sunflower plant under zinc stress.

The present study was undertaken to examine the possible roles of sodium nitroprusside in protection against oxidative damage due to zinc toxicity in sunflower plants. Physiochemical parameters in sunflower plants exposed to Zn2+ (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg soil) alone or combined with SNP were measured. The results showed that excess of Zn decreased plant growth, seed yield components and photosynthetic pigments content. On the other hand, Zn stress increased the level of non-enzymatic antioxidants (ascorbic acid and reduced glutathione) and enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, ascrobate
