In vitro comparison of treatments and commercially available solutions on mortality of Angiostrongylus cantonensis third-stage larvae.

On Hawai'i Island, an increase in human neuroangiostrongyliasis cases has been primarily associated with the accidental ingestion of Angiostrongylus cantonensis L3 in snails or slugs, or potentially, from larvae left behind in the slug's slime or feces. We evaluated more than 40 different treatments in vitro for their ability to kill A. cantonensis larvae with the goal of identifying a safe and effective fruit and vegetable wash in order to reduce the risk of exposure. Our evaluation of treatment lethality was carried out in two phases; initially using motility as an indicator of larval surviv

A genome-wide association study reveals a novel regulator of ovule number and fertility in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Ovules contain the female gametophytes which are fertilized during pollination to initiate seed development. Thus, the number of ovules that are produced during flower development is an important determinant of seed crop yield and plant fitness. Mutants with pleiotropic effects on development often alter the number of ovules, but specific regulators of ovule number have been difficult to identify in traditional mutant screens. We used natural variation in Arabidopsis accessions to identify new genes involved in the regulation of ovule number. The ovule numbers per flower of 189 Arabidopsis acc

Resistance of rice to insect pests mediated by suppression of serotonin biosynthesis.

Rice is one of the world's most important foods, but its production suffers from insect pests, causing losses of billions of dollars, and extensive use of environmentally damaging pesticides for their control1,2. However, the molecular mechanisms of insect resistance remain elusive. Although a few resistance genes for planthopper have been cloned, no rice germplasm is resistant to stem borers. Here, we report that biosynthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in mammals3, is induced by insect infestation in rice, and its suppression confers resistance to planthoppers and stem borers, the two m

Could nitrile derivatives of turnip (Brassica rapa) glucosinolates be hepato- or cholangiotoxic in cattle?

Turnip (Brassica rapa ssp. rapa) and rape (Brassica napus ssp. biennis) and other brassica forage crops are regarded as "safe" feed for cattle during late summer and fall in the North Island of New Zealand when high Pithomyces chartarum spore counts in pastures frequently lead to sporidesmin toxicity (facial eczema). Sporadic acute severe cases of turnip photosensitization in dairy cows characteristically exhibit high γ-glutamyl transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase serum enzyme activities that mimic those seen in facial eczema. The two diseases can, however, be distinguished by histopatholo

Inhibition of nitrate transporter 1.1-controlled nitrate uptake reduces cadmium uptake in Arabidopsis.

Identification of mechanisms that decrease cadmium accumulation in plants is a prerequisite for minimizing dietary uptake of cadmium from contaminated crops. Here, we show that cadmium inhibits nitrate transporter 1.1 (NRT1.1)-mediated nitrate (NO3 (-)) uptake in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and impairs NO3 (-) homeostasis in roots. In NO3 (-)-containing medium, loss of NRT1.1 function in nrt1.1 mutants leads to decreased levels of cadmium and several other metals in both roots and shoots and results in better biomass production in the presence of cadmium, whereas in NO3 (-)-free medium,

Optimizing desalinated sea water blending with other sources to meet magnesium requirements for potable and irrigation waters.

Sea water desalination provides fresh water that typically lacks minerals essential to human health and to agricultural productivity. Thus the rising proportion of desalinated sea water consumed by both the domestic and agricultural sectors constitutes a public health risk. Research on low-magnesium water irrigation showed that crops developed magnesium deficiency symptoms that could lead to plant death, and tomato yields were reduced by 10-15%. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on a relationship between sudden cardiac death rates and magnesium intake deficits. An optimization model

Effective induction of oral anaphylaxis to ovalbumin in mice sensitized by feeding of the antigen with aid of oil emulsion and salicylate.

It is important to evaluate the ability of novel proteins in food crops and products to elicit potentially harmful immunologic responses, including allergic hypersensitivity. We developed a novel mouse model of food allergy involving an oral challenge of a protein antigen after feeding of the antigen in combination with modulating factors often ingested in daily life, namely, dietary oil emulsion and salicylate. In the model, BALB/c mice were sensitized orally for three weeks with ovalbumin (OVA) in linoleic acid/lecithin emulsion, followed immediately by intraperitoneal injection of sodium sa

Pesticide application and detection in variable agricultural intensity watersheds and their river systems in the maritime region of Canada.

Applications of pesticides in areas of agricultural production have been an environmental concern for the past several decades. Varying-sized watersheds draining regions of intense agriculture in the Maritime Provinces of Canada were monitored between 2003 and 2007 to determine the major in-use pesticides and to gain an understanding of the risks posed to aquatic ecosystems. A questionnaire collected from farmers in one watershed intensively cropped with potato indicated that 43 pesticides were applied with 18 of them being detected in that watershed. Our results across the Maritime region sug

The unique role of fluorine in the design of active ingredients for modern crop protection.

The task of inventing and developing active ingredients with useful biological activities requires a search for novel chemical substructures. This process may trigger the discovery of whole classes of chemicals of potential commercial interest. Similar biological effects can often be achieved by completely different compounds. However, compounds within a given structural family may exhibit quite different biological activities depending on their interactions with different intracellular proteins like enzymes or receptors. By varying the functional groups and structural elements of a lead compo

Risk Assessment of Repetitive Movements in Olive Growing: Analysis of Annual Exposure Level Assessment Models with the OCRA Checklist.

In Italy, one of the main agricultural crops is represented by the cultivation of olive trees. Olive cultivation characterizes the Italian agricultural landscape and national agricultural economics. Italy is the world's second largest producer of olive oil. Because olive cultivation requires the largest labor force in southern Italy, the aim of this research was to assess the risk of biomechanical overload of the workers' upper limbs. The objective, therefore, was to determine the level of risk that workers are exposed to in each phase of the production process. In Calabria, the second most im

An unconventional approach to evaluating the environmental role of a productive system: An environmental assessment of beef farms in North-West Italy.

The environmental impact of livestock is often evaluated separately from the other agricultural activities involved in an integrated system, such as that of the rearing of Piemontese cattle in the area of origin of the breed. The most frequently used assessment methods (e.g. Footprint approaches or a Life Cycle Assessment) are in fact often used, through a product-based approach, to analyse a single productive process, but such methods do not consider the production of agro-ecological services, and they neglect the interactions that characterise complex systems. Moreover, such methods often on

First Detection of Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus Infecting Zucchini in Spain.

In September 2012, a novel disease syndrome was observed in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) crops in Murcia Province (southeastern Spain). Symptoms included curling, vein swelling, and severe mosaic in young leaves, short internodes, and fruit skin roughness, resembling begomovirus infection. Similar symptoms were observed in May 2013 in Almería Province (southern Spain). DNA was isolated from 8 and 7 symptomatic leaf samples collected in Murcia and Almería, respectively, and analyzed by PCR with primers GemCP-V-5' and GemCP-C-3' designed to detect begomoviruses by amplifying the core of coat pro

Synergistic effects of biochar and organic fertilizer on the regulation of microbial carbon and nitrogen metabolism in paddy soil to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions.

Biochar and organic fertilizer have been widely applied to improve soil carbon sequestration and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rice production systems. However, the synergistic mechanisms through which these amendments regulate microbial carbon/nitrogen (C/N) metabolism, net GHG emissions, and crop productivity in dry direct-seeded rice (DDSR) systems remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted with combined treatments of organic fertilizer substitution (0% and 20%) and biochar application (0, 5, and 10 t/hm2) to evaluate their integr

Nano-enabled microbial bioinputs for sustainable agriculture: advances, mechanisms, applications, and future challenges.

Microbial bioinputs have emerged as key components of sustainable agriculture owing to their ability to promote plant growth, improve nutrient acquisition, enhance tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, and suppress phytopathogens. Despite their considerable potential, the widespread adoption of these technologies remains constrained by limited environmental persistence, reduced formulation stability, and inconsistent performance under field conditions. In this context, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising approach to improve the stability, delivery efficiency, and agronomic reliabilit

Seed priming with chitosan nanoparticles improved seed vigour parameters and antioxidant enzyme kinetics under polyethylene glycol (PEG) induced drought stress in cotton.

Global cotton production often experiences significant obstacles from climatic variability, particularly due to drought stress. The present study evaluated the efficacy of seed priming with chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) as a sustainable strategy to mitigate drought stress in cotton under rainfed ecology of cotton cultivation in India. The laboratory synthesized chitosan nanoparticles using the ionic gelation method with trisodium polyphosphate (TTP) as a crosslinker were characterized through transmission electron microscopy (Joel JEM 2100 Plus) and particle size analyser (Malvern Zetasizer Na

Transcriptomic analysis reveals that high-protein artificial diet enhances reproductive performance of Protaetia brevitarsis (Lewis) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

Insects have emerged as promising sustainable alternative protein sources, among which Protaetia brevitarsis (Lewis) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) exhibits considerable potential for valorizing lignocellulosic wastes (e.g. crop straw) into high-value proteins. The larvae of this species are traditionally used in medicine and as a health food, but the underdeveloped rearing technology for adults has impeded large‑scale commercialization and application. Thus, the development and optimization of artificial diets represent a critical breakthrough for overcoming this bottleneck. Herein, we integrated

Fungicides enhance inflammatory response and hamper gastrointestinal barrier integrity in in vitro human models.

Fungal infections represent a major challenge for agricultural production, driving the extensive use of fungicides to prevent crop losses. Although these compounds effectively control fungal pathogens, increasing evidence suggests that they may also exert unintended effects on human health. Indeed, their impact on human immune cells and intestinal epithelial function remains poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the effects of four widely used agricultural fungicides (azoxystrobin, fluxapyroxad, cyazofamid and cyflufenamid) on inflammatory responses, macrophage metabolism and ep

Integrative transcriptome-metabolome dissection of the molecular basis of lodging resistance in oat (Avena sativa L.) basal internodes.

BACKGROUND: Oat (Avena sativa L.) is an important grain and feed crop, playing a significant role in agricultural production. However, lodging remains a key factor limiting oat yield and quality. Recent advances in molecular biology have shed light on the mechanisms of oat lodging resistance, particularly highlighting the critical role of lignin and cellulose content in stem strength. Nevertheless, the molecular regulatory networks governing lignin and cellulose biosynthesis in the basal second internode remain poorly understood. RESULTS: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis o

SPVD-field: a task-oriented multi-task visual dataset for sweet potato virus disease under real field conditions.

Sweet potato virus disease (SPVD) is one of the most destructive diseases affecting sweet potato production worldwide, causing severe yield losses and posing a significant threat to food security. Vision-based intelligent diagnosis has emerged as a promising solution for large-scale SPVD monitoring due to its low cost and scalability. However, existing publicly available datasets for SPVD are extremely limited and typically focus on a single task, such as disease classification or lesion segmentation, under constrained imaging conditions. This lack of comprehensive, task-oriented datasets sign
