Immunophenotype of cells within cervine rectoanal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and mesenteric lymph nodes.

Rectoanal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (RAMALT) is a part of the lymphoid system that can be sampled easily in live animals, especially ruminants. RAMALT biopsy is useful for the diagnosis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, including scrapie in sheep and goats and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids. Diagnosis is reliant on detection of abnormal prion protein (PrP(d)), which is associated with lymphoid follicles. For enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) detecting PrP(d) it is necessary to ensure that lymphoid follicles are present in biopsy samples to avoid false-ne

Chorioptes mites: re-evaluation of species integrity.

Chorioptes mites (Acari: Psoroptidae) are non-burrowing agents of mange which parasitize a wide range of domesticated and wild ungulates. Co … classic 1958 description of C. texanus, which were obtained from the ears of semi-domesticated reindeer, are likely to have been specimens of this as yet unnamed species. The results show that there is a high degree of phenotypic plasticity in setal lengths. It is concluded that a statistical difference in the absolute measurement of any one seta is n …

Immune responses of elk to Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette Guerin vaccination.

Although rare, detection of Mycobacterium bovis infection of captive or free-ranging elk (Cervus elaphus) elicits serious concern due to regulatory and zoonotic implications. Few studies, however, have evaluated the immune response of elk to M. bovis or other pathogens. To model natural infection, elk were vaccinated with live M. bovis bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG, Pasteur strain) for evaluation of immune responsiveness to this attenuated live vaccine. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of vaccinated elk proliferated in response to stimulation with a soluble mycobacterial antigen prepa

Diseases of wapiti utilizing cattle range in southwestern Alberta.

Specimens from 28 wapiti (Cervus elaphus canadensis) were collected by hunters in southwestern Alberta in 1984. Various tests were performed to detect infections and conditions that could affect cattle sharing the range or cause disease in wapiti. Serum antibodies were present against leptospiral serovars autumnalis (25%), bratislava (4%), and icterohaemorrhagiae (8%), and the viruses of bovine virus diarrhea (52%), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (45%), and parainfluenza type 3 (13%). No serological evidence of bovine respiratory syncytial virus, Brucella, Anaplasma, bluetongue virus, or ep

Palaeodiet reconstruction in a woman with probable celiac disease: a stable isotope analysis of bone remains from the archaeological site of Cosa (Italy).

Stable isotope analysis in the reconstruction of human palaeodiets can yield clues to early human subsistence strategies, origins and history of farming and pastoralist societies, and intra- and intergroup social differentiation. In the last 10 years, the method has been extended to the pathological investigation. Stable isotope analysis to better understand a diet-related disease: celiac disease in ancient human bones was carried out. To do this, we analyzed the nitrogen and carbon isotopic composition of human (n = 37) and faunal (n = 8) bone remains from the archaeological site of Cosa at A

Prevalence of ectoparasitic arthropods on wild animals and cattle in the Las Merindades area (Burgos, Spain).

This paper reports the prevalence of ectoparasitic arthropods in sampled groups of wild (n = 128; 16 species) and domestic (n = 69; 3 species) animals in the Las Merindades area of the Province of Burgos, Spain. The study revealed that wild animals were more infested and with a wider variety of ectoparasites than domestic animals. The parasitic prevalence was 67% for wild animals and 48% for livestock. In this way, 39% of animals were infected by ticks. Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes hexagonus were the most prevalent species whereas Dermacentor reticulatus showed affinity for the fox and wolf. The

Are there pros as well as cons to being parasitized?

The diversity of ways in which parasites reduce the fitness of their hosts has been documented during the past decades, and clearly indicates that parasites can often be considered as direct agents of selection. In natural systems, however, the outcome of a host-parasite interaction might be strongly determined by other ecological factors. Parasites can be detrimental to host fitness in one environment, whereas they can be beneficial to it in another. From an evolutionary perspective, this phenomenon is of considerable importance for understanding the dynamics of coevolution among geographical

Defective post-replication recovery and u.v. sensitivity in a simian virus 40-transformed Indian muntjac cell line.

The responses to u.v. of two cell lines derived from the Indian muntjac are described. The u.v. sensitivity of the diploid cell falls within the range of most normal mammalian cells while the other, a heteroploid cell, transformed by SV40, is much more sensitive to killing. This hypersensitivity cannot be explained by defective excision repair: the two cell types are indistinguishable in this activity as judged by inhibitor-associated DNA break accumulation and unscheduled DNA synthesis. Rather, the SV40 transformed cells have a pronounced inability to recover normal DNA replication after u.v.

An X-to-autosome-to-Y chromosome amplified retrogene family functions in spermatids.

Mammalian Y chromosomes acquire lineage-specific gene families1,2,3,4,5 with spermatogenic functions in male fertility,1,2,6,7,8 a mechanism that counters Y chromosome decay. However, in most mammals, the mechanisms by which Y chromosomes acquire new gene families and the benefits they confer to males remain poorly understood. Here, we discover that deer mice (Peromyscus) acquired a lineage-specific, massively amplified Y-linked gene family, Phf8y. Phf8y arose via the transposition of autosomal Phf8l, which previously arose via retrotransposition from an X-linked gene, PHD-finger protein 8 (Ph…

A liposome-hydrogel composite ameliorates UVB-induced mouse skin photoaging through integrated antioxidant and extracellular matrix remodeling pathways.

Skin photoaging, predominantly caused by chronic ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure, is characterized by oxidative stress, collagen degradation, and disruption of the skin barrier. Deer placenta polypeptides (DPP) are rich in bioactive amino acids (AAs); however, their antioxidant and dermo-protective effects remain insufficiently elucidated, and their topical application is limited by enzymatic instability and poor transdermal permeability. To overcome these limitations, we developed a liposome-hydrogel composite delivery system to enhance the stability, skin penetration, and bioactivity of DPP. DP…

Molecular and morphological analysis revealed a new Lipoptena species (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) in southern Spain harbouring Coxiella burnetii and bacterial endosymbionts.

Hippoboscid flies (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) are obligate bloodsucking ectoparasites of animals. In Europe, limited research has been conducted on this family until the recent introduction of the deer ked Lipoptena fortisetosa Maa, 1965. A new species of the genus Lipoptena, Lipoptena andaluciensis sp. nov., was found in southern Spain after extensive sampling with carbon-dioxide baited suction traps. A total of 52 females and 32 males were collected at 29 out of 476 sites examined over eight months in 2023. Lipoptena andaluciensis sp. nov. was characterized morphologically and molecularly. The …

Physiological Evidence for Delayed Age-related Hearing Loss in Two Long-lived Rodent Species (Peromyscus leucopus and P. californicus).

Deer mice (genus Peromyscus) are an emerging model for aging studies due to their longevity relative to rodents of similar size. Although Peromyscus species are well-represented in genetic, developmental, and behavioral studies, relatively few studies have investigated auditory sensitivity in this genus. Given the potential utility of Peromyscus for investigations of age-related changes to auditory function, we recorded auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in two Peromyscus species, P. californicus, and P. leucopus, across the lifespan. We compared hearing sensitivity and ABR wave metrics measu…

No Bull: A Case of Alpha-Gal Syndrome Associated With Buffalo Meat Sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Alpha (⍺)-gal syndrome (AGS) is an immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody response against the glycoprotein carbohydrate galactose-⍺-1,3-galactose-β-1-(3)4-N-acetylglucosamine-R (Gal⍺-1,3Galβ1-(3)4GlcNAc-R or ⍺-gal) that is present in Ixodida (tick) saliva and noncatarrhine mammals as well as cetuximab, antivenom, and the zoster vaccine. The most frequently observed anaphylactic reactions in AGS are observed after beef, pork, lamb, and deer meat consumption. We present the first case of anaphylaxis to buffalo meat.
