BACKGROUND: Mechanic's hand is a defined specific skin eruption associated with dermatomyositis; there are few reports concerning its histopathology. As mechanic's hand clinically resembles hand eczema, it is important to distinguish between these two conditions.
AIM: To determine the characteristic clinical and histopathologic features of mechanic's hand, and to clarify whether these two conditions can be differentiated by histopathologic findings.
METHODS: We analyzed clinicopathologically five patients with mechanic's hands who visited our clinic between 2006 and 2007.

Although potatoes represent a large part of diets worldwide, adverse reactions to them are considered uncommon and usually result from ingestion, mainly in children. In contrast, immediate reactions to contact with raw potato has been reported more frequently in adults, usually in the form of an oral contact dermatitis or contact urticaria, but also may manifest as asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, wheezing or even anaphylaxis. We report a case of non-occupational allergic contact urticaria caused by raw potato, which we then documented by prick testing.

CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old woman with enterocutaneous fistula secondary to Crohn's disease developed pruriginous, erythematous, desquamative plaques on her elbows, knees, hands, and buttocks after receiving the second and third doses of intravenous infliximab. One hundred consecutive patients with hand eczema were patch tested with the Indian Standard Series and indigenous antigens after a detailed history and clinical examination. Both sexes were involved and the majority of them were in the age group between 20-39 years (56%). This study compares the cutaneous reactivity between the hand and the back for 7 female patients with active hand eczema, who were found to be nickel-sensitive on routine patch testing with the European standard series. Different types of hand eczema in an industrial city were studied. Questionnaires were sent to 20,000 individuals aged 20-65 years, randomly selected from the population register of the city. Those subjects (1,385) considering themselves to have had hand eczema within the previous 12 months were invited to a dermatological examination. Ferrous sulfate has been added to cement manufactured in Denmark, reducing the water soluble chromate content to not more than 2 ppm, since September 1981. A comparison is made between the medical and employment status of a cohort of workers engaged, or who had been engaged, in the manufacture of prefabricated concrete building components in 1981 and in 1987. Superficial epidermal surgical removal of a recurrent herpes simplex lesion within 36 hours of onset nearly always prevented recurrence in the site of excision. It is postulated that the surgery results in epidermal denervation, which prevents reinoculation of that epidermal site by the virus-laden sensory neuron. The procedure did not prevent further clinical expression of the disease at other epidermal sites innervated by the same or other infected neurons.
