Effect of chemical fogging on immature Aedes mosquitoes in natural field conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever are common and serious arboviral diseases endemic in a number of countries situated in both the tropical and subtropical belts. METHODS: A prospective study was carried out to examine the environmental factors influencing the ovipositing behaviour of gravid female Aedes mosquitoes in a typical urbanised residential environment in Malaysia. This study reports the effect of the usual ultra-low volume fogging of insecticides carried out by public health officers on the collection of immature Aedes mosquitoes using ovitraps. RESULTS: Throughout

Laboratory and field trial of developing medicinal local Thai plant products against four species of mosquito vectors.

Oils of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) and Zanthoxylum limonella (makaen), widely used essential oils for dental caries or flavoring of food in Thailand, were prepared as 10 experimental repellent products in gel or cream form against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles dirus under laboratory conditions, using the human-arm-in-cage method. Two products that gave the longest-lasting complete protection were selected to examine their repellency against a variety of mosquito species under field conditions. In laboratory tests, 0.1 g of each product was applied to 3x10 cm of exposed

Integrated control of Boophilus microplus ticks in Cuba based on vaccination with the anti-tick vaccine Gavac.

Boophilus microplus has developed resistance against a range of chemical acaricides which has stimulated the development of alternative methods such as vaccination against ticks. In Cuba, the Bm86-based recombinant vaccine Gavac has been successfully used in a number of controlled laboratory and field trials in cattle against B. microplus. In this paper, we have evaluated Gavac in a large scale field trial wherein 588,573 dairy cattle were vaccinated with the aim to reduce the number of acaricidal treatments. It was found that the number of acaricidal treatments could be reduced by 87% over a

Conquering the intolerable burden of malaria: what's new, what's needed: a summary.

Each year, up to three million deaths due to malaria and close to five billion episodes of clinical illness possibly meriting antimalarial therapy occur throughout the world, with Africa having more than 90% of this burden. Almost 3% of disability adjusted life years are due to malaria mortality globally, 10% in Africa. New information is presented in this supplement on malaria-related perinatal mortality, occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus in pregnancy, undernutrition, and neurologic, cognitive, and developmental sequelae. The entomologic determinants of transmission and uses of model

Field capture of northern and western corn rootworm beetles relative to attractant structure and volatility.

We used field assays to study attraction of feral northern and western corn rootworm beetles (Diabrotica barberi and D. virgifera virgifera) to a series of mostly nitrogenous and benzenoid synthetic compounds allied with host plant and floral aromas. Vaporization rates were obtained for most field-tested compounds and selected additional lures under both ideal and field-representative, but constant, conditions. Although many test compounds showed at least trace activity for one or both species, methyl benzoate and some of its derivatives, notably methyl anthranilate and methyl 4-methoxybenzoat

Efficacy of ivermectin and moxidectin injection against larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) in sheep.

The therapeutic efficacies of ivermectin (Ivomec injection, Merck Sharp & Dohme B.V.) and moxidectin (Cydectin 1% injection, American Cyanamid Company) were evaluated in sheep naturally infested with larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Sheep were randomly allocated to one of the 2 groups, each consisting of 19 animals. Sheep in one group received ivermectin and those in the other, moxidectin by subcutaneous injection at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg body weight. Evaluation was performed at 19, 24, 28, 39, 43, 48, 52, 63, 67, 72, 87, 96, 120, 144 and 168 h after treatment. At 144 and 168 h post-treatment, l

Two Novel Mosquitocidal Peptides Isolated from the Venom of the Bahia Scarlet Tarantula (Lasiodora klugi).

Effective control of diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti is primarily achieved through vector control by chemical insecticides. However, the emergence of insecticide resistance in A. aegypti undermines current control efforts. Arachnid venoms are rich in toxins with activity against dipteran insects and we therefore employed a panel of 41 spider and 9 scorpion venoms to screen for mosquitocidal toxins. Using an assay-guided fractionation approach, we isolated two peptides from the venom of the tarantula Lasiodora klugi with activity against adult A. aegypti. The isolated peptides were named

Effect of Pesticides on Biological Control Potential of Neoscona theisi (Araneae: Araneidae).

The present study was designed to record the effect of λ-cyhalothrin, Bifenthrin, and Glyphosate on the mortality, avoidance behavior, foraging activity, and activity of Acetylcholine esterase (AChE) and Carboxylesterase (CarE) in Neoscona theisi (Walckenaer, 1841). Highest mortality (70%) in N. theisi was recorded against λ-cyhalothrin. However, Glyphosate was found to be least toxic. Spider spent less time on insecticides/herbicide-treated surfaces. Insecticides/herbicide-treated N. theisi consumed less prey than untreated control spiders. Similarly, when N. theisi were offered insecticide/h

Establishment of a method for Lutzomyia longipalpis sand fly embryo microinjection: The first step towards potential novel control strategies for leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne parasitic disease transmitted by sand flies that affects 1.3 million people across 98 countries, with limited control strategies due to the lack of an available vaccine and the emergence of insecticide resistance.  Novel control strategies that are being explored for mosquito-borne diseases, such as Wolbachia bacterial inhibition of pathogens and genetically modified insects (e.g. using CRISPR-Cas9 editing), rely on the ability to consistently inject embryos of the target species.  Here we present a novel method to obtain and inject preblastoderm sand fly embryo

Description of the immature of Podisus graziae Brugnera, Roell & Lemaître, 2021 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Asopinae).

As predaceous insects, the Asopinae have a great economic importance. The knowledge about the development of the species is essential for use in biological control programs. However, only 1% of the Neotropical Asopinae species have the immature stages known. In this work we describe the egg and the five nymphal stages of Podisus graziae Brugnera, Roell & Lemaître, 2021 using light and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that P. graziae eggs and nymphs present unique characters which are not observed in other species of the genus and subfamily. As other Podisus species, the egg prese

Thiamethoxam intoxication due to occupational inhalational exposure.

Neonicotinoid is a new class of systemic insecticides that are selectively toxic to insects. However, cases of human toxicity have been reported. A man in his 60s, who worked as a pest control operator (which required the use of thiamethoxam), presented with fever and headache. We investigated the levels of thiamethoxam and clothianidin in the blood and urine. Our results suggested that chronic thiamethoxam intoxication was caused by occupational inhalation exposure and environmental pollution. After cessation of insecticide use, the patient remained asymptomatic but had persistent oral dysest

The sublethal effects of deltamethrin on Trichogramma behaviors during the exploitation of host patches.

Trichogramma and parasitoids as a whole are key species because they regulate natural populations of other insects. As any non-target species, this parasitoid can be exposed to insecticides by environmental pollution. This study identified the effects of an LD 20 of deltamethrin (a pyrethroid) on the behavior of Trichogramma brassicae females infesting a patch of host eggs. The study found that females that survived exposure to the insecticide infested fewer host eggs; spent more time on unsuitable, previously infested host eggs; and infested more previously infested host eggs than controls. Galleria mellonella as a model host to study gut microbe homeostasis and brain infection by the human pathogen listeria monocytogenes.

The gastrointestinal tract in both mammals and insects is associated with microbes (collectively the microbiota), which are controlled by the intestinal immune system. These microbes regulate pathogens that can infect gut epithelial cells, and there is increasing evidence for a reciprocal relationship between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gut and the intestinal immune system. Deciphering these complex interactions between the microbiota and intestinal immune system in mammals requires surrogate model systems, such as larvae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella. The exposure

Relocating in contaminated terrains: cypermethrin impacts task performance and nest choice in a non-target ant species, Diacamma indicum.

On the face of growing pesticide contamination in the environment, non-target species of insects face serious threats in the ecosystem, ranging from species decline to behavioural changes. Social insects living in colonies are vulnerable to the multimodal effects of pesticide contamination, especially when they are relocating their nests. Nest relocation is a goal-oriented task in eusocial species, which exposes the whole colony to environmental stressors like pesticide contamination. In this context, we investigated the effect of a pyrethroid pesticide, alpha-cypermethrin, on the colony reloc

Transcriptomic insights into thermal stress reveal physiological trade-off between thermal stress adaptation and reproductive investment in Spodoptera litura.

Spodoptera litura, a highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest, poses a major threat to agricultural productivity due to its remarkable adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. Although heat stress is known to trigger transcriptional reprogramming in insects, the molecular mechanisms underlying thermal stress responses in S. litura remain poorly understood. In the present study, fourth-instar larvae were exposed to acute heat stress (44 °C) and compared with control conditions (27 ± 1 °C) to investigate heat-induced transcriptional alterations affecting physiology and reproduction. High-qu

Identification of Potential Insect Growth Inhibitor against Aedes aegypti: A Bioinformatics Approach.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector that transmits viral diseases such as dengue, hemorrhagic dengue, urban yellow fever, zika, and chikungunya. Worldwide, many cases of dengue have been reported in recent years, showing significant growth. The best way to manage diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti is to control the vector with insecticides, which have already been shown to be toxic to humans; moreover, insects have developed resistance. Thus, the development of new insecticides is considered an emergency. One way to achieve this goal is to apply computational methods based on ligands and targe
