Positive body image is a pathway between nature contact and life satisfaction across 58 nations.

Time spent in nature benefits human mental and physical well-being. However, much of the variance in outcomes of nature contact remains unexplained, suggesting that new mechanistic pathways need to be considered. Here, we tested a novel conceptual model linking nature contact with life satisfaction via pathways involving positive experiences of living in and experiencing the world through the physical self. Using data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS; N = 50,363), representing respondents from 58 nations and speaking 36 different languages, we find that nature contact is associated w

Predicting PANSS symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders using speech only: an international, multi-centre, computational secondary analysis across multiple languages.

BACKGROUND: Speech carries cues to variation in mental state in schizophrenia, typically indexed with clinician-rated scales such as Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). In this study, we aggregate multi-centre recordings to assemble a large corpus and assess symptom-prediction models at scale, to enable rater-independent, efficient, and reproducible assessments for early detection of relapse-related signals from speech. METHODS: In this computational secondary analysis, we compiled data from 453 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, recruited between 2005 and 2026 from ten

Response Quality of AI-Generated Answers to Orthodontic Patient Concerns Across Empathy, Accuracy, Comprehensiveness, Personalisation, Safety, and Patient-Centeredness: A Cross-Model, Bilingual Evaluation of Claude, GPT-4o, and Gemini.

BACKGROUND: Patients now consult large language models (LLMs) for orthodontic concerns, but most evaluations sit in English and focus on factual accuracy. We compared three current LLMs (Claude Opus 4.5, GPT-4o, Gemini 2.5 Flash) on patient-facing responses in English and Turkish, and tested whether model differences held up after adjusting for response length. METHODS: Sixty standardised patient scenarios were prompted in both languages to each model via stateless single-turn API calls with identical token limits, yielding 360 responses. Three blinded orthodontists scored every response on e…

Syntactic complexity representation in sentence production reveals a fronto-temporal syntactic network.

A milestone of human language faculty is to communicate with syntactically complex sentence structures. Although various syntactic complexity representations have been studied in language comprehension, a clear framework that systematically organizes syntactic complexity into different levels and the corresponding neural substrates during sentence production are largely unknown. Therefore, this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigated the neural substrates of syntactic processing during production responsive to a well-organized hierarchy of syntactic complexity: Sentence

The regulatory element READ1 epistatically influences reading and language, with both deleterious and protective alleles.

BACKGROUND: Reading disability (RD) and language impairment (LI) are heritable learning disabilities that obstruct acquisition and use of written and spoken language, respectively. We previously reported that two risk haplotypes, each in strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) with an allele of READ1, a polymorphic compound short tandem repeat within intron 2 of risk gene DCDC2, are associated with RD and LI. Additionally, we showed a non-additive genetic interaction between READ1 and KIAHap, a previously reported risk haplotype in risk gene KIAA0319, and that READ1 binds the transcriptional regula

Probing the content of semantic representations in body-selective regions.

Recent advances in neural networks trained on natural language have revealed that category-selective regions encode complex semantics and contextual information of natural scenes in addition to object categories. However, the limited interpretability of embeddings derived from these models complicates the characterization of the aspects of natural scenes that contribute to such semantic representations. Here we addressed this question by developing an analysis of the relationship between object co-occurrence in large-scale natural scene captions and corresponding fMRI responses predicted by ca

Modeling differences in neurodevelopmental maturity of the reading network using support vector regression on functional connectivity data.

Predicting chronological age from functional properties of the brain may be informative of children's neurodevelopmental trajectories. Specifically, neurodevelopmental or learning disorders may be associated with atypical maturation of brain networks. In this study, we examine the relationship between reading disorder (RD) and maturation of functional connectivity (FC) in the brain using a cross-sectional sample of N = 742 participants aged 6-21 years. A support vector regression model was trained to predict chronological age from FC data derived from a whole-brain model as well as multiple 'r

Prompt Tuning of Deep Neural Networks for Speaker-Adaptive Visual Speech Recognition.

Visual Speech Recognition (VSR) aims to infer speech into text depending on lip movements alone. As it focuses on visual information to model the speech, its performance is inherently sensitive to personal lip appearances and movements, and this makes the VSR models show degraded performance when they are applied to unseen speakers. In this paper, to remedy the performance degradation of the VSR model on unseen speakers, we propose prompt tuning methods of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for speaker-adaptive VSR. Specifically, motivated by recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP), we f
