Efficacy of anti-VEGF monotherapy versus anti-VEGF therapy with subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) in the management of diabetic macular oedema (DMO): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intravitreal injection anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (IVI anti-VEGF) therapy serves as the primary treatment for centre involving diabetic macular oedema (DMO). Conventional laser therapy (CLT) adjunct has proven beneficial; however, it is not widely used due to significant risks of retinal scarring. Subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) therapy has, however, emerged as a comparable alternative to combination therapy, offering a distinct advantage by mitigating the risk of retinal scarring. METHODS: A search of six databases was conducted. A meta-analysis of mean differenc

Twin-twin transfusion syndrome - a University Hospital experience with intrauterine treatment.

INTRODUCTION: twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), defined by combination of polyhydramnios-oligohydramnios, is the most prevalent (5%-35%) of the abnormalities due to placental vascular anastomoses and the most lethal (80%-100% mortality) if untreated. Fetoscopic laser ablation of abnormal vasculature using the Solomon technique is the gold standard approach. It consists of interrupting the intertwin blood flow. OBJECTIVES: to present our initial experience at the Fetal Surgery Service of the Hospital de Clinicas of the Federal University of Parana (HC-UFPR) and to compare our results w

Clinical outcomes of micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation in refractory glaucoma-18 months follow-up.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes of micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (mTSCPC) in cases of refractory glaucoma. Patients with refractory glaucoma were selected to undergo mTSCPC, using the MP3 handpiece from Iridex Laser Systems. Follow-up examinations occurred on a regular basis for 18 months after the procedure. One hundred eyes of 97 patients were treated. Mean pre-laser intraocular pressure (IOP) was 39.14 ± 13.84 mmHg. This was reduced significantly to 22.77.8 ± 10.48 mmHg (41.82% reduction; p < 0.001) at week 1. At months 1, 3, 6, 12, and 18 the IOP

Study protocol for prognosis and treatment strategy of peripheral persistent avascular retina after intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy in retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic peripheral photocoagulation has been proposed to be applied to persistent, peripheral, avascular retina for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) patients who have received an intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents. However, there are doubts regarding the necessity of this prophylactic action regardless of fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) results. The adverse prognosis for persistent avascular retina after anti-VEGF therapy in ROP patients is not well understood. The relationship between vascular leakage and an adverse progn

Bilateral Vitreous Hemorrhage Following Bilateral Intravitreal Injections of Bevacizumab in an Infant With Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Since the publication of BEAT-ROP in 2011, intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) has become increasingly common for the treatment of posterior type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). However, long-term data on the safety and efficacy of IVB for ROP are lacking. Vitreous hemorrhage following bevacizumab injections have been rarely reported in infants with ROP, and the need for treatment of these hemorrhages remains in question. Here, the authors report a case of bilateral vitreous hemorrhage in a premature infant within 2 weeks of bilateral intravitreal injections of bevacizumab. These hemorrhages re

Beta-blockers for prevention and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vision-threatening disease of preterm neonates. The use of beta-adrenergic blocking agents (beta-blockers), which modulate the vasoproliferative retinal process, may reduce the progression of ROP or even reverse established ROP. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of beta-blockers on short-term structural outcomes, long-term functional outcomes, and the need for additional treatment, when used either as prophylaxis in preterm infants without ROP, stage 1 ROP (zone I), or stage 2 ROP (zone II) without plus disease or as treatment in preterm inf

Recurrent Macular Detachment Due to Occult Retinal Break in a Patient With Optic Disc Pit.

Serous macular detachment occurs in nearly 50% of eyes with optic disc pit. These macular detachments have been historically difficult to treat. The authors report a case of macular retinal detachment due to an occult juxtapapillary retinal break in a patient with optic disc pit refractory to prior treatments. This case demonstrates that a presumed serous detachment associated with an optic disc pit may have a rhegmatogenous etiology. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2017;48:432-434.].
