Cellular iron homeostasis is controlled by the iron regulatory proteins (IRPs) 1 and 2 that bind cis-regulatory iron-responsive elements (IR … ron pool. Importantly, Pfn2-deficient mice showed iron accumulation in discrete areas of the brain (olfactory bulb, hippocampus, and midbrain) and reduction of the hepatic iron store without anemia. Despite low liver iron levels, hepatic hepcidin expression remained high, likely because of compensatory activation of hepcidin by mild inflammation. Splenic ferropo …

The central nervous system is emerging as an important target for adverse health effects of air pollution, where it may contribute to neurod … peroxidation, and neuro-inflammation in various brain regions, particularly the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb. An impairment of adult neurogenesis was also found. In most cases, the effects of DE were more pronounced in male mice, possibly because of lower antioxidant abilities due to lower expression of paraoxonase 2.

The Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RSTS) is a congenital disease that affects brain development causing severe cognitive deficits. In most cases … ncy is specifically associated with significant reductions in prosencephalic tissue, such us in the olfactory bulb and neocortex, whereas regions evolved from the embryonic rhombencephalon were spared. Adult neurogenesis is actively studied in part because of the potential to manipulate endogenous neural stem and progenitor cells for tissue repair. Although constitutive generation of neurons in the adult rodent olfactory bulb and hippocampal dentate gyrus is widely accepted and stroke-induced generation of striatal inhibitory neurons consistently observed, evidence supporting the generation of neurons in the neocortex after neuronal loss remains slim. Nevertheless, a few studies suggested that targeted apoptosis of neocortical glutamatergic neurons could trigger the generation of new ones in…

Enhancement of neurogenesis could be a suitable treatment approach to up-regulate dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease (PD). In the present study, we focused on the kinetics of the subventricular zone (SVZ) in a mouse model of PD induced by MPTP injection. The cloned vanilloid (capsaicin) receptor subtype 1 (VR1) integrates multiple noxious stimuli on peripheral terminals of primary sensory neu … nforcement. Evidence is mounting that VR1 expression is not restricted to sensory neurons. From the olfactory bulb to the cerebellum, VR1-expressing neurons are present in a number of brain nuclei, where they might be activated by anandamide. VR1 presence also was demonstrated in nonneuronal tissues. These discoveries place VR1 in a much broader perspective than …

mAb-based approaches were used to identify cell surface components involved in the development and function of the frog olfactory system. We describe here a 205-kD cell surface glycoprotein on olfactory receptor neurons that was detected with three mAbs: 9-OE, 5-OE, and 13-OE. mAb 9-OE immunoreactivity, unlike mAbs 5-OE and 13-OE, was restricted to only the axons and terminations of the primary sensory olfactory neurons in the frog nervous system. The 9-OE polypeptide(s) were immunoprecipitated and tested for cross-reactivity with known neural cell surface components including HNK-1, the cell

Rats were trained on an olfactory and a control modality (auditory or visual) discrimination task and brain membrane-associated protein kinase C (mPKC) was subsequently assessed using quantitative autoradiography of radiolabelled phorbol ester binding. In rats which received olfactory-cued training, mPKC showed a highly significant lateralization in the piriform cortex but not in the hippocampus. Both olfactory-trained rats and control modality rats showed a significant increase in mPKC in the hippocampus when compared to naive rats. Thus, while behavioral training procedures appeared to resul
