Effects of Chronic Pelvic Pain on Heart Rate Variability in Women.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and myofascial pelvic pain are frequently comorbid chronic pelvic pain disorders. Differences in bladder function between interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and myofascial pelvic pain suggest that efferent autonomic function may differentiate these syndromes. Heart rate variability, defined as the difference in duration of successive heartbeats, serves as an index of autonomic function by measuring its ability to modify heart rate in response to neurophysiological changes. High frequency heart rate variability was used as a reflecti

Autonomic nervous system activity assessment by heart rate variability in experimental bladder outlet obstruction.

A syndrome with urgency, with or without associated urine incontinence and usually accompanied by higher urinary frequency and nocturia has been named "overactive bladder; OAB". OAB is an entity with complex pathophysiology, involving both myogenic and neurogenic (afferent / efferent bladder innervation) disturbances. OAB symptoms accompany benign prostatic hypertrophy--BPH ("obstructive OAB"). The aim of the study was to estimate the autonomic nervous system activity (ANS) in the experimental bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) which was an animal model of the human BPH. The study was conducted

Normal and abnormal circadian profiles of heart autonomic balance, evaluated by time-related common indicator of heart rate variability.

OBJECTIVE: Heart rate variability (HRV) is an universally accepted method for assessing the heart autonomic balance (HAB). At the same time HRV is a highly specific method, but with a low sensitivity to the cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We found that HRV indices may be applied to obtain differentiated characteristics of the HAB for individual CVD. METHODS: We assessed the changes taking place in the circadian characteristic of the autonomic balance, which has a definite profile with and without the principal CVD. We proposed adequate time-related autonomic balance indicator (TRABI) for evalu

Influence of smoking on baroreceptor function: 24 h measurements.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies showed that smoking four cigarettes per hour impairs baroreflex sensitivity in humans. In this study, baroreceptor function was qualified more precisely by 24 h measurements using the new portable Portapres system, allowing a continuous non-invasive registration of blood pressure curves. METHODS: Twenty-four smoking individuals (12 male/12 female) who smoked more than 10 cigarettes per day for more than 6 years were investigated. Thirty non-smokers (15 male/15 female) served as controls. Data were evaluated separately for the 08:00-22:00 h and 22:00-08:00 h periods.

Effects of physical training on heart rate variability in patients on hemodialysis.

Dysfunction of the cardiac autonomic nervous system is a known complication of end-stage renal disease. The objective of the study was to mainly investigate the effects of physical training on 24-hour vagal cardiac activity in dialysis patients. Sixty chronic uremic patients (mean age 48 +/- 12 years) on maintenance hemodialysis were studied. After initial evaluation, 30 patients (group A) were randomly assigned to a 6-month exercise training program (3/week). The other 30 patients (group B) and 30 nonuremic sedentary persons (group C) remained untrained and were used as controls. Parasympathe

Acute autonomic modulation during Jacobson's progressive muscle relaxation in normal-weight vs. overweight male recreational athletes.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a reliable non-invasive marker of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and has been increasingly used to assess physiological responses to stress and recovery interventions. Although relaxation techniques such as Jacobson’s Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) are widely implemented, their acute effects on HRV across individuals with different body mass index (BMI) classifications (normal, overweight, obese) remain understudied. This study aimed to analyse HRV-based autonomic modulation during a Jacobson’s progressive muscle relaxation, and to assess differenc

Effects of Music Intervention on Pain, Mood, Sleep, and Heart Rate Variability in Patients with Chronic Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain (CP) represents the most prevalent form of pain experienced by patients. Among various conservative treatment modal … observed modulation of the LF/HF ratio suggests that MT may regulate the balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity in these patients. These results suggest that MT can serve as an effective adjunctive intervention in the management of CP. Peripheral tissue BDNF expression is affected by promoter IV defect and enriched environments in mice: negative hippocampus-intestine and positive thymus-serum-muscle correlations.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression is reduced in the brain of various central nervous system (CNS) disorders, but its relation to peripheral expression remains unclear. This study aimed to determine peripheral BDNF expression affected by BDNF promoter IV defect and enriched environment treatment (EET). Promoter IV defect is associated with CNS disorders and chronic stress, whereas EET increases hippocampal BDNF expression and ameliorates CNS dysfunctions. METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay measured BDNF protein levels in eleven regions (hippocampus, fronta

Factors influencing heart rate variability in nurses following night shifts: a prospective observational clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been established as a key indicator of autonomic nervous system activity, reflecting both sympathetic and parasympathetic modulation. This study was aimed at investigating the factors that influence HRV in nurses following night shifts. METHODS: A prospective, observational, single-center study was conducted in the office corridor of a tertiary hospital in southern China. Thirty-five female nurses (median age: 27.0 years) working ward shifts were enrolled; all the participants were free of severe cardiopulmonary diseases and mobility limitations. Nu

The contribution of brain volume to explain autonomous imbalance during recovery from acute stress in batterers.

AIM: Many authors have suggested that intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators present an imbalance between both branches of the autonomous nervous system when coping with acute stress. Concretely, there is a predominance of the sympathetic branches over the parasympathetic ones when recovering from stress. This imbalance can be explained by their tendency toward anger rumination, and more concretely, by their focus on thoughts of revenge during this period. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the scientific literature in terms of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to assess wh

[Importance of neuro-urological care in patients with spinal cord injuries/diseases].

Integrity, control and regulation of the urinary tract are subject to a complex neuronal regulation, in which portions of the sympathetic, parasympathetic and somatic nervous system are involved. The spinal cord plays a central role in regulation and serves as a transmitter for the motor and sensory pathways. Bladder dysfunction followed by renal dysfunction was the most frequent cause of death in patients with spinal cord injuries/diseases (paraplegia) as recently as half a decade ago. Thanks mainly to diagnostic and therapeutic advances made in neuro-urology, urological problems are no longe

Vagal nerve stimulation in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury: from bench to bedside.

The identification of acute cardioprotective strategies against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury that can be applied in the catheterization room is currently an unmet clinical need and several interventions evaluated in the past at the pre-clinical level have failed in translation. Autonomic imbalance, sustained by an abnormal afferent signalling, is a key component of I/R injury. Accordingly, there is a strong rationale for neuromodulation strategies, aimed at reducing sympathetic activity and/or increasing vagal tone, in this setting. In this review we focus on cervical vagal ner

Parasympathetic and sympathetic control of emmetropization in chick.

Emmetropization can be altered by temporal visual stimulation and the spectral properties of the visual environment. The goal of the current experiment is to test the hypothesis that there is an interaction between these properties and autonomic innervation. For that purpose, selective lesions of the autonomic nervous system were performed in chickens followed by temporal stimulation. Parasympathetic lesioning involved transection of both the ciliary ganglion and the pterygopalatine ganglion (PPG_CGX; n = 38), while sympathetic lesioning involved transection of the superior cervical ganglion (

Simultaneous cardiac and respiratory inhibition during seizure precedes death in the DBA/1 audiogenic mouse model of SUDEP.

This study was designed to evaluate cardiac and respiratory dysfunction in a mouse model of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy i.e., SUDEP. We simultaneously monitored respiration via plethysmography and the electrocardiogram via telemetry before, during, and after an audiogenic seizure. DBA/1 mice responded to an acoustic stimulus with one or two cycles of circling and jumping before entering a clonic/tonic seizure. This was followed by death unless the mice were resuscitated by mechanical ventilation using room air. During the initial clonic phase, respiration declined and cardiac rhythm is

Ganglionated plexi stimulation induces pulmonary vein triggers and promotes atrial arrhythmogenecity: In silico modeling study.

BACKGROUND: The role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) on atrial fibrillation (AF) is difficult to demonstrate in the intact human left atrium (LA) due to technical limitations of the current electrophysiological mapping technique. We examined the effects of the ANS on the initiation and maintenance of AF by employing a realistic in silico human left atrium (LA) model integrated with a model of ganglionated plexi (GPs). METHODS: We incorporated the morphology of the GP and parasympathetic nerves in a three-dimensional (3D) realistic LA model. For the model of ionic currents, we used a hum
